The people of Kogi will never forget her kind heart and unselfish devotion that allowed them to be rescued and the Igala country to survive.

Late Princess Inikpi’s tale is one of bravery and valour. Inikpi was Ayegbu Oma Idoko’s only child and the previous Atta of Igala Kingdom’s only daughter. She was referred to as Inikpi Oma’fedo baba, which translates to “Inikpi, the father’s beloved.”

However, It all began with a battle involving Benin and the Igala tribe, which rendered the area dangerous, causing farmlands to be taken over by the invaders and streams to be poisoned, killing anybody who drank from them. There was no completely safe place.

The Igalas worried hunger and a shortage of water would lead to their deaths. When the Atta, which means King, consulted the oracle, it foretold that they would only be able to reverse their fate and win the battle if the princess, the king’s only daughter, was buried alive. The king was in tears, distressed and sad. He went days without eating or drinking, wishing for an alternative. No parent wants their child to die no matter the type of child.

The princess observed her father’s concern and inquired as to the cause of his grief. So instead of having the conversation, he waited seven days before giving her the explanation, but on the eighth day, he gave in and revealed the Oracle’s words.

The Princess adored her father and the people as much as they adored her, and she couldn’t stomach delaying the answer that would preserve Igala country. Princess Inikpi did not raise an objection or struggle. As a result, she freely accepted to be offered and set off towards Idah the market square, where she had been buried beside nine slaves who would assist her in her passage to the afterlife.

The Igala people praised her for her bravery, despite the terrible outcome. Following the sacrifice, the myth goes that when the Bini forces approached to attack, they saw the entire town in flames and fled, thinking there was no point in fighting in a city that is already on fire; nevertheless, it was Inikpi’s blood that fooled them due to the sacrifice’s effect.

The Princess’s involvement in avoiding calamity in Igala country is still remembered as a significant historical event in the Igala people’s lives. In honor of the princess, many individuals in Idah now go by the name Inikpi.

The sacrifice was precious and risky, but it restored peace in Igala country.

Princess Inikpi, who was sacrificed for the Igalas to survive, is the unifying element in Igala territory to this day.

A monument of the princess sits in “Ega” in Idah, which is regarded as the Igala traditional headquarters, in honour of her sacrifice and bravery

I hate stories such as these. I mean, according to the story, only one had to die for the tribe. If bravery is accorded the princess for her sacrifice, what about the 9 gals who were roped into the death pact of no real choice of their own?
