Crime was strategically important to Russia. This was because Russia had a warm water navy base there courtesy of Ukraine that leased that port to the russians. Russia is almost always cold so most of its navy bases are most times frozen that's why the crimean navy base was important. Russia took the decision to annex crimea when the pro Moscow Ukrainian president viktor yanukovich was overthrown and an anti-Moscow president (petrol poroshenko) came into power. Russia believed the CIA sponsored that change of Government and that the US end game was to bring Ukraine into NATO which Russia did not want. Russia moved faster than the US by annexing crimea making sure they has access to the sea, Russia then funded war in Eastern ukraine taking advantage of a statute of NATO that says no country under war or having a civil war can be admitted in NATO. Russia's endgame is not to take Ukrainian land but to keep the conflict there going on low-key so Ukraine can never get into NATO. watch out anytime there's talk of ukraine joking NATO that conflict in Eastern Ukraine will flare up. Both the US and Russia know what there are doing. Its just like a game of chess.

As regards US(NATO) and Russia going to war with each other, such will never happen as Russia is the only country in the world capable of turning the US to a pile of Ash. War will not happen.
