Medicine and surgery do pathology which deals on the clinical aspect of laboratory tests and has nothing to do with how tests are done. There is no where in medical school that staining procedure for demonstration of glycogen in tissue is taught or how to carry out test for LE cells. Same way they do pharmacology which is just an aspect of what pharmacy do in school. They don't do and never do what you do in school. If a doctor claims he do all you did in school, give him a blood sample and neubaeur counting chamber let him do WBC count on the sample grin
. They just study peripheral part of it.

Goodafternoon Great Scientists,
Please I have a question;

In all the specialties that we have, which of the them gives someone an edge if the person has a plan of furthering abroad especially the US?

I mean, people that I had asked told me " it's always good my proposed postgraduate research/thesis be in line with what I would do in my undergraduate research work."

If I'm majoring Hematology then my search for schools should be around that area. It makes it easier to be selected.

Or it doesn't matter where we specialize in our undergraduate. We can just go on and apply as far as it's related to MLS?

Thank you.

Hello, accidentally bumped into this thread and saw that you wrote the ASCP exam several years back. If you can, I'll like to know about your journey and process.

Medical doctors who are consultant haematologists can do that test. It's not even a difficult test. Medical doctors, as a whole, know the basics of those tests, but were not trained to do them. They focus more on the clinical aspect as you rightly mentioned. There's division of labour.

MLS is the technical arm trained to carry out those tests. However, resident doctors in pathology can carry out those tests, since they have to retrain in those areas.

Besides, it's not every new graduate of MLS that can do that test. As regards the staining procedure for glycogen demonstration and others, they are covered in pathology in medical school.
