The Gross Domestic product is the monetary value of total goods and services produce in an economy within a given period. If the revenue accruing to the government is the lowest in the world then it means there is income loss .it may be either through maladministration, mismanagement of material, human and economic resources, natural disaster, internal and external war and most significantly corruption.
In reality Nigeria revenue could not have done better if all these variables are currently in forces against the GDP.
We have a clueless president who is clouded by ethnic sentiments. He would rather have all his kinsmen in all strategic position of the economy without considering competence and federal character principle as provided for in our constitution.
GDP measurement is one of the barometers that can be used to gauge how an economy is fairing. A good economic management team will enhancing output and invariably increase standard of living if the productivity are prudently managed.

Our tax to GDP ratio has hovered between 4.-6% in the last 20 years, this just an opportunity for you to display your bigotry and ethnic jingoism

Funnily enough, the government's finance people have been saying the same thing that the article is saying for a long time. And that includes Lie Mohammed.

They all know. But because the solution means taxing every one...and everyone..not just the 30% paying ....that's not politically popular.

You sabi the matter on ground unlike the hordes of religious and ethnic bigots populating this thread. It's another opportunity to bash their political nemesis, they don't care to take learnings from the matter of discussion

The poorest thinkers in this country are found among those who support this govt.

Otherwise how can someone open his mouth to say that Nigerians should be taxed more when we are by far the most highly (indirect) taxed populace in the world!

Running generators is an indirect tax since the deceptions in APC promised the gullible ones power within 6 months of ascending the throne. Up until a few months ago everybody who wanted a prepaid meter had to pay through the nose to get one.

A small kiosk pays the local govt for a license to operate, it doesn't end there. The boys will come around for levy, then one day the state govt comes to bulldoze the place.

While the road is being repaired the owner of a filling station is forced to give the construction guys money etc otherwise they will purposely block the gates of the station.

You Know Nothing

You mumu is boldly written on your head. When we talk of tax evasion and expanding tax net you think we're talking of the 30k monthly you make? While you should pay your fair share like 300 naira monthly, we're talking more of the Obi Cubana , Atikus, Tinubus, Davidos, Don Jazzy etc who make billions every year but probably pay less tax than you do.

By pareto principle these are the 20% Nigerians who generate 80% of our GDP. A Nigerian billionaire that should pay $100m taxes will pay 10k naira , take the money abroad to buy mansion and put a girlfriend inside, you will clap for them on social media. That $100m could be enough to enough to pay for free public education for 1m children your children inclusive.

But so you can pocket your 300 naira tax you defend those evading $100m tax.

This is an indication that Nigerians don't pay tax but want govt to provide paradise and utopia out of thin air. Smaller African countries in terms of GDP and population raise revenue of over $100bn out of their economy to use for public works, education and healthcare investment.

But Nigeria raise mere $30bn and ignorant Nigerians want to have world class everything out of that. Funds that cannot give a country like USA adequate fire fighting services.

South Africa will invest our entire budget on education and still have another $100bn left for other things. Yet they still have hungry looters and poorly educated people.

We are doing ourselves bad if we don't create a working tax system, age of excess oil funds is over
what impact has the goverment made with the little revenue it is generating?

The enterprises in the South mostly center on importing and selling imported stuff. Ironically, the same happens up North. And the result is all the same...we don't make anything, we import stuff we make self....and we lose dollars, and get broke...and then take loans to make the diffierence.

It isn't about 'who chooses our leaders' for me. Even if it was up to the South to choose leaders, the way most Nigerians think....we should share money (and most criticism of our leaders is based on how they share money really)...at the end of the day, the Southern leaders would be just like the Northern leaders. Run an economy based on sharing money

We have to stop relying on oil and start relying on industrial growth, more taxes, and less corruption.(Gowon one of your norhterners also developed an industrial development plan for Nigeria...which if we had followed might have helped us out of our revenue dependency by now)

Keep in mind that many African countries are just as broke as we are...and most of them, as far as I know, have no Northerners in charge or running the country. When your income is dependent on raw materials whose prices you do not control....you go broke when prices fall below replacement/sustenance (Zambia is 80% Christian, has no Hausas as far as we know...and is broke like Nigeria because they rely on copper...and the last time copper prices were high enough to sustain their economy was in 2006-11)

Zambia has corrupt and incompetent politicians without the added security problems that are prominent in Northern Nigeria. 80% of Zambia are literate, Nothern Nigeria the literacy level in 30%

How much money have you earned this year ?

So calculate your own personal tax from there.

You will see someone who hasn't eaten or earned N300k in 7 months talking about taxation.

300k that is less than 800dollars.

It's not a matter of just calling for more tax, majority of Nigerians are living below poverty line, or just struggling to stay afloat. Is it people struggling to access basic human necessities that will now be burdened with more tax?

One way more taxes can be gotten will be through some form of luxury taxations, but you think the elites won't fight the government that has refused to limit its own spendings on that...

We have to improve infrastructure, better improve productive of the citizenry, then government can introduce all the tax they want to.

I doubt if your gross salary is up to my monthly tax. By the time I factor income tax on my business and investment income, you can imagine what goes to govt coffers from my activities.

Only people who don't pay anything will not mind others to also evade tax.

Most of the uncollected $70bn + tax is in the hands the wealthiest 10% of Nigerians who earns millions and billions. Some of them make money by selling commodities to 200m Nigerians and put nothing back to govt revenue. They now take a huge chunk of that unpaid tax to invest and pay taxes in other countries.

The first stage of industrial development is security, mass education and universal healthcare.

An uneducated, unsecured and unhealthy nation can never develop, insecurity is the reason why Nigeria has unsustainable food inflation.

I doubt you can find an industrialised country with a literacy level lower than 50%. I doubt you can fin any county in Southern Africa as backward as Northern Nigeria, maybe North Mozambique can come to close Northern Nigeria backwardness, they have a large Islamic population.

Zambia, Zimbabwe, Angola and Bostwana are currently resource-dependent, but due to their stable security environment and high literacy rate, they are one or two steps from industrialisation. They just need to fix government corruption and set up an industrialisation policy.

Nigeria's pay more indirect tax than direct tax. If you want tax to be direct you have to eliminate other sources of exploitation and hand over all tax system to state to manage. With the bogus federal that feeds on billions and too hungry for anything export and import, am not sure we will reach this stage without a huge consequence

Why are the mainly Muslim Maghreb states, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt more advanced and developed than most of the sub-saharan black African states? If Islam is the problem why is the largely Christian states like Congo, Zimbabwe and Angola not very advanced and industrialized?

Stop being emotional and face the fact

The question you should ask is why are North African countries less developed than mediterranean countries in Europe.

Consider pre-Islamic conquest of North Africa North Africa was once one of the most civilise regions in the world. Today North Africa despite 100 years of exposure to Western European developments is just 50 years ahead of Sub-saharan Africa.

Some North African countries like Mauritania, Sudan and Libya are as backward as Northern Nigeria.
