@ michlins, would it be possible for you to modify and add the pipes on site to give the extra dimension.
that job can't be modified at all. There's no way to modify that job at all

You are only repeating what he himself has acknowledged here. Emphasis on the bolded

See quote below

Where I fault him is he didn't just add the pipes or do whatever it takes to get the exact dimension he was told to make

To be honest, I didn’t see that comment.

This means the client is not at fault. If I give you money to buy me a 3ft door, I expect a 3ft door and not something less.

The explanation given won’t fly with me because I understand what’s at play. The vendor is trying to reduce offcuts/wastages on the job which is fine but I shouldn’t be made to pay for that.

I do give my workers instruction not to cut my plywood but I won’t tell them to reduce the decking size because I don’t want to use more boards. I provide them alternatives to use when I want to minimize wastages.

Good day All and trust your day is progressing well.

Please what can one add to a soakway to douse the odor emanating from it? the soakaway is not full just to make it clear but the odor comes out from the vent ontop of the soakaway.

I am wondering if there are chemicals or freshners that can be placed in the soakaway or vent to douse the order?

please sir, that's how doors are made. Even the prefabricated doors are smaller.

Here's how it goes. A sheet of pan is 8ft and when divided by four gives you 2ft plus 3" of the pipes. That's 30" then you add frames which is usually 1.5" on both sides. That's a total of 33".

This is the way it works. If you want to expand the size, you will have to add pipes in-between to increase it.

These things are like this anywhere and everywhere
Bro seriously, anybody not in this ur field or not conversant with them won't be able to understand ur point.

I agree with this. Assumptions were made by the vendor.

I’ve never dealt with this here in Nigeria so I’ll defer to my other Ogas for local content.

However I do know that you don’t want to pour just anything in there as you don’t want to kill the organisms in there that breaks down the waste.

Good luck Sir.

You not getting it, it's even wrong for an engineer to create an opening of 900mm when the door specification is also 900mm,
That is the principle that makes all engineers allow tolerance of an inch or more to allow for proper installation for either doors n Windows.
So it's wrong to even reduce the size of the door he is fabricating except he was told or he measured the as-built n the opening itself is 900mm already.
I will not accept the door as well but let's acknowledge that it has happened n only him can still make this go away ASAP by he said he won't let his self esteem or so down n that's where there is issue.
I will suggest to him to always prepare a drawing or detailed sketch for doors n some other things he does to avoid more occurence.
Lot of learning still has to be done when you are dealing with clients that knows what they want

the same clearance is the matter here. It's 1.5" on both sides.

Apologies let me ask you this question.......

I can see that from the client's post of the door sent as mounted on the provided space the mortar chalking space is about 2-3" on the left side and on the right it's lapping on the wall.
Please can you help read the dimension on the tape as shown on the pix as to where the door ends on it............
Thanks

You quoted and unquoted a document lol. I have done 75meters without expansion joint. More so, as the structural designer, I can decide to remove expansion joint and then apply the estimated temperature variation as a load in the structural analysis.

I cited it for reference.

I also had to quickly agree that there’s a new research which nullified the initial claim.

that should be 33" and 3ft is 36". That leaves a difference of 3" which is 1.5" on each side.

Like someone said, it's not recommended to tamper with the chemistry. The soakaway is working as it should.

Apart from changing the occupants' food diet (lol), what I would do if this was mine is to find a way to source and then place activated carbon filters around the vent. Something like this (dunno if you can find in Nigeria) ....

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Activated-Carbon-Odour-Filter-Joseph/dp/B07XLP7RKG/

This will involve a mini-project to design a fitment or box around the vent that keeps the filter dry during rainy conditions.

Also note that they are to be replaced periodically, once saturated (you will notice when smell reappears). Interval depends on the, ahem, occupants' diet.

Good luck.

Activated carbon would definitely absorb and lock up the gases given off in the soakaway sir.
If this product can be sourced and fixed, it would work.

Block the vent on the septic tank and get your plumber to run another vent to a safe place outside your fence or on the roof. Any space higher than the roof will keep the smell away.

#. You can pour in baking soda and vinegar to kill the odour for some months or even year(s).

You can clean the vent pipe on the inside. It is possible the vent is a bit blocked causing not enough air inlet into the soakaway to aid the breakdown of enzymes. Just like cars; if your spark plugs have issues, your car will smoke.

#. You can use a P-Trap for the vent pipe instead of the normal one and pour water into it. The water prevents the odour from coming out. See attached photo.

#. I guess the soakaway is built wrongly. Both toilet waste and kitchen/bathroom waste should not go into one chamber. This causes steam up during hot weather leading to smell. If your toilet waste is going into a dedicated chamber, seal the vent. You will be fine. But then, the odour will now come out in the toilet wash hand basin and even kitchen sink. If this happens, use a P-Trap connection. See attached photo. The water in the U area of the P-Trap prevents the odour from coming out just like your WC.

A client back then introduced a 5inch pipe vent on to of the soakaway… so the air from the soakaway can filter away

@michlins sorry to say... You goofed on this one

She asked for something with specifications. You did not deliver to her specifications.

She had conversations with you which you could have managed properly... You still did not do that.

She was angry (I myself would) and said unprintable things to you... What did you do in response? Talk back at your client.

I have been one of your number one fan here from your day one when people thought you were a middle man and had no faith in you.

This is what I would love you to do. (If you would listen)

Ask the client what she would like you to do to remedy the situation. When she does. Please do it.... Don't see it as a loss, see it as a way to grow

Madam Eyinne, please forgive him and find a way forward. Dont out of anger spend another 300k... It would be double painful.

diordaves:

There are clients that are bad market. This you should know. So to filter out bad market, next time these are processes you should carry out before moving to site:

#1. If the client is from Nairaland, look up for how long they've been on Nairaland. If they've been on Nairaland for a good length of time, take some comfort in that. Good information about their personality will be here on Nairaland by their posts and the forums they frequently visit. Be wary of those who register today, today to contact you for work. Just be wary. It doesn't mean this is not possible. Just be wary because you don't know jack about them. ALWAYS research your client upfront before accepting any job. Ask them for their name. I will come to 'name' again in point three.

#2. Be attentive to the way they address you or talk to you in messages. Be wary if they are unduly and unnecessarily harsh in their communication to you. As if they are doing you a favour. It is not a favour. It is a working relationship. Yes, you are soliciting for work, but you have a right to be addressed with some respect and kindness. All that ORDER to come to site or forget the job is not necessary. It is a tell-tale sign of a tortuous job and a potentially difficult client going forward. And there are difficult clients out there. I speak as a client.

#3. ALWAYS ask for a mobilization fee BEFORE moving to site. This is standard and good practice. Any client that argues with this na bad market. Move on. I have said previously in researching the client you should ask for their name. If you ask for a mobilization fee and they agreed, make sure payment is by bank transfer and that the payment account details match with the name the client told you. If the bank details don't match for some reason (maybe the client is abroad and they don't have a Nigerian bank account), ask more questions about who made the payment and ask to communicate with whoever made the payment. Your client should KNOW you in true colour and same as you.

Don't be desperate to please to land a job. On the flip side, if a client asked you to come to a site that is so far away for investigation or consultation with a potential view of awarding you the job, ask for a reasonable non-refundable fee in lieu of the cost of visiting the site and tell the client that this fee is non-refundable if you do not get the job eventually but if you got the job, this fee is included in the final fee.

Kudos to you sir I have really learn a lot from this write up from the start to the end points thank you very much.
