You really do not understand the enormity of our present predicament.

Even if all politicians start earning zero salary, we still do not have the revenue !!!!!

Simple mathematics:

If 75,000 doctors in Nigeria should start earning average salary of say N1million per month, that's total of N75billion per month and N900b per year!! Just for Doctors salary alone!!!!

What is the budget for health, private, federal and all states combined??

What if other professionals now demand equal treatment, what will happen to NIGERIA

Nigerians think good governance requires paying public sector wages for doctors or lecturers that compete with Saudi or UK wages.

Next to corruption, public sector wages bleed the country dry insidiously as only a tiny proportion of the population receive it but it takes up a huge chunk of government spending whilst public infrastructure is left unattended unless we get one of those Chinese loans.

As a medic, the fact is , we doctors don't get paid well (One of my brothers who lives abroad when he heard my salary, his first question was...are they ripping you off?. He was shocked to hear that I was even one of the better paid doctors at my level)

But here is why Saudi can afford to pay such high salareis

1.Saudis produce oil...10 million barrels of crude compared to our 1.4 million barrels of crude.daily

2.Saudis have 35 million people, compared to our 200million people.

3. Saudis have a higher income compared to us as a result...

4.Saudi's foreign reserve in 2014 was at 750 billion dollars. Nigeria at that time was managing 39 billion dollars in our reserve.

Wow !

You are such a realist, not even adding sentiments as a medical doctor.
I am so impressed.

The truth might be bitter for others.Senseless ridiculing their country,I pray for them and you, to get better offers somewhere else,if so desired.

If your father is poor and you are being called by your very rich uncle or father's friend,to come stay with him, what do you do?

Whatever your choice, would you because of that ridicule your poor father, even if he is the architect of his own misfortune.?

I wonder what will happen when teachers narrate their own tales of woes.
The average salary for teachers in Nigeria is #30 000 in this economy while some earn #15 000 - #25 000.

I tell you.

But the thing is, we need something like a budget of 10 trillion for education before we can talk of decent salaries for teachers.

NIGERIAN government needs to do better, everything isn't about looting and looting, a cousin of mine who was a medical doctor faced the same travails in Nigeria not until he moved to the US before alot of things changed for him

he now drive expensive cars, built a lavishly furnished duplex and other investments, NIGERIAN government needs to wake up and step up and be more responsible, they need to value our doctors because they are live savers, I am afraid if they don't do this, alot of young NIGERIAN doctors will move out en masse.

He does not pay the same debt as his colleagues in the US who schooled there do, which is why he can afford all of that.

Here in Nigeria, we pay less than 500 dollars annually for education. Thus we leave school with not much debt or no debt.

In the US, fees can start at 3000 dollars or even as high as 40000 dollars. And you are schooling for 8-10 years (4 years college, 4 years medical school..which goes up to 6 years if you are doing a combined MD/PhD programme).

I once heard a black American female doctor state that her debt from medical school alone was $150000 dollars.

Doctors can be the new source of foreign exchange if the govt can look deeper.
Every year in the universities more than enough qualified students for medicine are forced into other departments because the quota for medicine is 150 at max.
You'll see people with hyper impressive grades forced into other departments..
It won't take much for the FG to invest in the medical sector and improve the quota of every universities to 500.
That way we'll have much more exports and also more private hospitals at lesser rates.
Nigeria is yet to have a goverment that can understand this, what we have been getting is a bunch of "agbero" who finds themselves in position to loot

Most graduates can't do more than one job that's if they even get jobs. Whereas doctors can do multiple jobs. Doctors should calm down

Do you repeat classes in engineering? I mentioned this elsewhere, in my school you fail, you resit, you resit and fail again = repeat. Repeating in my school means you have to go two years backwards and pay school fees again. Not even nurses, pharmacists and medical laboratory scientists are asked to repeat a class. It’s not even done in those countries where people are running to, so they deserve the right to complain.

You still think it is only salary they are complaining about?

Besides who told you they are demanding #1 mil monthly.

Simply make the work environment equipped and provide adequate leave, reduce work load.

You need to read in between the lines.

When have doctors, or indeed any of our public sector unions like ASUU, actually gone on strike where the primary reason was for anything not related to their pay? Sometimes, they tag along other issues in their public demands so they don't look too selfish but strikes are primarily about pay even as the public infrastructure around them is collapsing.

In many respects, Nigeria's leaders reflect the mindset of the Nigerian people in that we are primarily concerned with personal wealth/finance at the expense of the public wellbeing. That's why you don't hear of union strikes to demand infrastructure investments or investigation/resignation of corrupt officials. Everyone is narrowly focused on boosting their bank balance. Strikes are effective in compelling government to change but Nigerian strikes are solely pay related.

Yeah, a US resident is paid well.

But the fact is a Nigerian IMG (International medical graduate) arriving in the US for residency does not have the burden of college loan debt that his US colleague has...that's why they can afford nice stuff...

(Though it costs a lot of money to pass US licensing exams, and to get the visas...and that includes travelling costs.)

I’m sure those engineers have mouth and can get their ass up to fight for themselves but then again in a country where they are pretty much useless, they have no bargaining chip, maybe they could have got up and fight. That is what the engineers should actually fight for not going back and forth about who is being dealt the better hand in this shitty country. I even like the smart ones, they are just catapulting to Canada in silence, na doctors get time dey make noise , dey should have just be moving in numbers under the radar

That's before you talk of the abject lack of infrastructure: good roads, lack of pipe-borne water, electricity, etc.

That's why simply focusing on the claim that doctors are paid poorly in Nigeria is annoying. Everyone is underserved by the Nigerian government apart from criminals/terrorists and politicians.

Since Saudi Arabia is so rich that can pay foreign doctors high wages, why can't they use the money to build their own medical schools to train their own doctors? Some of these Nigerian doctors used the government grants and subsidized education to get their training but took all that to Saudi Arabia because of higher wages.

Speaking as a doctor who works here in Naija..it isn't the money that tempts us to move abroad.

There are many times when you have a patient, with an illness that you know you can treat, but the patient does not have the cash to pay for said treatment, even at subsidized rates.

Also, poor funding means we sometimes don't have all we need to treat patients...who then die.

All that takes a toll, so we check out .

Yes, they should pay them better.

But the thing is, Nigeria, like most African countries, runs an economy where we sell raw materials , whose prices are always never at a level that can sustain us, so we don't have enough money to pay people better.

WHICH is why I yell on this site that the government needs to change the way we run our economy....from selling raw materials to using raw materials. But APC and PDP do not have that on their platform.

Till then, people are always going to go where the money is.

The only way a sane and sound leader would be able to keep Nigerian doctors in Nigeria is by paying them a decent salary

And the funds for that would have to come from raised taxes, and raised income nationally
