Meanwhile, our brothers in Guinea operates MiG-21s (less than a squadron strength though) in case we need to bring freedom to their doorstep.

Nigeria should stay away from any hard power diplomacy unless its likely to become a threat to us or impact on our closest neighbours.

We have far too much insecurity on our home turf to go get stuck in a quagmire in Guinea.

one would think a self acclaimed 'military' blogger would study Albania/Azerbaijan war, from 90s till the most recent one.
Where number of tanks and amoured vehicles didn't matter.

Technology wise, SA has an edge over Nigeria
But I can't say same for military capability.

We go settle the matter; OBJ and GEJ as special envoys first.

Rumours that Israel will shift the Tavor to Reserve soldiers, with regular troops getting the M4 rifle. They'll join France, New Zealand and China(?) as countries who've recently abandoned bullpups as issued rifles to regular infantry.
That leaves Australia, Austria, and the UK as regular users of bullpups.
Good riddance, I've only shot 2 of the things and never liked them.

GEJ Diplomacy is usually too soft, too understanding.

We need a hardliner to act as a counter-weight to him with regards to diplomacy.

Short term military interventions are really important, however i don't think we should get into it for now.

Although i believe we can spare 2,000 soldiers for any intervention.

Short Term, yes. Long Term..... NO!!!

Colonel Mamady Doumbouya got tired of holding the umbrella for Conde, and thought others should do it for him.
Doesn't help of course, that Conde signed a budget which cut funds for all the security services the day before.
Multiple coups in Mali, a narco state in Guinea-Bissau, the dynastic nonsense in Tchad and now this in Guinea-Conakry.

All of Africa's regional hegemons -Algeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa - seem beset with problems internally and regionally.

The days of SMG by NSO made it somewhat difficult to identify them. Today you'll see someone wearing not so good looking chinos pants, dark shades and one polo with Tar 21. That there is your SSS operative you no need anything else as ID.

The only hardliner we've had as an Ambassador was Gen Buba Marwa. His time in SA made a huge difference. In situations like this you go to the table with list of sanctions based on what you've been offering in terms of military or economic interventions

Last I checked this is a Francofone country and it will be very unwise for our foreign intelligence not to be aware that France has been on the know from the very first step.

Any problem with the Tavor? I thought they were a total success, to such an extent that the mini Tavor was pushed to frontline troops?
And why they opting for the M4? It's a little long in the tooth. Why not the HK 416 or SCAR?

It might be just me, but comparing the South African and Nigerian military is like comparing Pete Edochie to Prophet Rolex. It makes very little sense.
Like during apartheid, the southies basically dictated what happened in southern Africa, regularly putting the fear of God into the "heathens", like the Israelis were doing to the Arabs. What they accomplished was nothing short of miraculous and you don't have to like them to acknowledge that.

I am happy to report coordinated military operation against bandits in Zamfara and Kaduna forests. Tremendous success being recorded. Bandits begging government officials in Zamfara and Katsina for mercy and negotiation. But the time for that is gone. Government told them they can't be trusted.

AH1F or AH1W.
They would have taken choppers from preservation, carried out age life extensions and upgrades and equipped them with modern avionics and precision weapons

its 12 AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters

WASHINGTON, July 29 (Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers have put on hold a proposal to sell almost $1 billion of weapons to Nigeria over concerns about possible human rights abuses by the government, three sources familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

The proposed sale of 12 AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters made by Bell (TXT.N) and related equipment worth $875 million is being delayed in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and in the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, the sources told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Foreign Policy reported this week that the State Department had informally notified Congress of the proposed sale but that it was frozen in the Senate committee. The package includes the helicopters, spare engines, navigation systems and 2,000 precision-guided munitions, it said.

I doubt anyone wants anything other than soft diplomacy but its looking increasingly unlikely and something has to be done else it will come back to haunt us one day. Clearly these guys felt emboldened because of Mali something that should never be allowed to happen again.

Indeed our security challenges makes it not the first choice of option to invade Guinea but eventually what needs to be done will be done

Ekweremadu condemns Guinea Coup, calls for Conde’s reinstatement
Published on September 6, 2021By Samson Atekojo Usman

Former Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has condemned in totality the military coup d’état in the Republic of Guinea, which ousted President Alpha Conde, describing it as a “huge setback for democracy in West Africa that must not be allowed to stand”.

Ekweremadu said that while leaders must work hard to enhance democratic governance and freedoms in the sub region, experience clearly showed that unconstitutional change of government had never been the answer either.

In a statement by his media adviser, Uche Anichukwu, on Monday, Ekweremadu, who chaired the ECOWAS Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on the Political Situation in Niger Republic and Republic of Guinea in 2009, called on ECOWAS leaders and the international community to apply the necessary pressure on the coup leaders to immediately release and restore President Conde to power.

“The coup in Guinea Conakry is yet another sad commentary on democracy, and the quest for political stability and economic prosperity in the West Africa.

“It is condemnable, unacceptable, and must never be condoned. Capture of power by unconstitutional means is against the letters and spirit of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance as well as the provisions of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.

“So much sacrifices have been made to entrench democracy as a permanent means of governance in the sub-region and military officers in every part thereof must be made to understand that any attempt to scuttle it will always be met with rigid opposition by the leaders and peoples of the Community.

“Therefore, this is a call on the ECOWAS leaders and members of the international community to stand up to the coup plotters to ensure that they reinstate President Alpha Conde immediately”, he said.

The lawmaker, however, called for more political freedoms, strict observance of the rule of law, better management of diversity, and preservation of the sanctity of the ballot box to detoxify the democratic environment, weeding it of every factor that makes coup making attractive.

“I must admit that our leaders must also strive and committedly bring to an end a culture of political impunity, winner-takes-all, sit-tight syndrome, and exclusionist tendencies in order to establish a egalitarianism, culture of democratic freedoms, rule of law, transparency, accountability, sanctity of ballot box, respect for term limits to ensure that democracy and its blessings endure in all of West Africa.”
