Facts:
The eatery did not have a guard on duty that day. The pharmary beside the eatery had a guard. From the CCTV replay, the first criminal signalled the pharmacy guard “calm down”, before they entered the resturant.

My sister did not write her PIN anywhere or on any things or revealed it to anyone. Her phone had a face-recognition lock, a finger print lock, a code lock. How they managed to access her phone is still a mystery.

GTB salary loan hmmm, that one weak me sef. I don't understand but my cousin told her that it takes less than 5mins to be granted.

The theives cashed the monies at POS points in Orile, Apapa locations etc.

In fact, there are things that are still mystery to us.
.... Gtb ussd banking sir.... U don't need a pin to actually do these things..... As far as she has her registered number there, her atm and email on the phone, they can actually reset her password with those details and gain access to the app and carry out transactions..... Our banks need to do more to protect us

Very unfortunate.

But may I ask if she truly called MTN customer care. I know that in such unfortunate circumstances the customer is asked to answer two questions just to prove that he/she is the owner of the said line. Once the questions are answered, the line in blocked instantly. That must happen while the customer care agents are on duty. I doubt it that a customer care agent would say the supervisor is not on duty. A lot of customer care agents even work from their homes.

In all, everyone should have SIM pin aside from phone lock for safety reasons.

As for the police, I seriously doubt if they can do anything about the situation. First they will reap you off by asking you to bring money for a entry and police report. Next they will ask you to bring 40k for tracking “a small phone” and 60K for tracking “ a big phone”. With no such money victims leave dejected.

Lack of this safety knowledge is what most people are lacking. What to do in an urgent situation like this is key. Call customer care of such network for first blockage of the Sim...

READ AND LEARN

Two days ago, Sunday 5th September, my sister, her 4 friends and 4 other customers were robbed at an eatery in Ogunlana Drive Surulere.

Time of the day 2pm!
Most people, just like her were coming from church and having a good time at the good time at an eatery.

The three criminals walked in, one at a time, hey hey, surrounded everybody and took all their phones. They went inside the inner room, took laptops and some money and left. They injured some people. My sister was unlucky, her bag was on top of the table, one just casually grabbed it and walked out. No gun shots.

They took all their phones. Then my sister's bag had, two phones, 3 ATM cards money, ID cards, driver's licence etc.

After the theives, for most of them, their first time encounters, they sat there, traumatised, crying, panicky, confused etc.

They called the police, it took till 5:30pm before the police arrived, the resturant replayed CCTV, they guys faces were seen, some other abrakadabra and told they were told to come back to station for statement the next day (Monday).

Monday morning first, she went to GTB and she was informed that the criminals took a loan of 500k from her account because it was her salary account.

Unbelieveable, right? YES!
Are loans that fast to get in GTB?
How about colateral from her place of work? I think the bank will require it so that the lender does not change her salary account from GTB until the loan is fully paid.
Can one withdraw more than N120,000 from the POS per day?

Sorry for the loss.

Don't be surprised it's possible when my phone was stolen I quickly put a call to GLO customer care to help block my line I was asked all sort of questions just to know am the rightful owner of the sim which I answered correctly they now asked me to call 3 numbers that I do call frequently and I replied them that for the past 6 month I hardly call with my Glo because their network is not strong in this area but am receiving calls on it 24/7 and I always recharge on it because I do use it to send SMS because it's my main line
You won't believe because of that I was told to come to their office before the sim can be blocked believe me before I get to their office almost N300k as gone from my accounts.
So I will want to believe her story

Hi flyca quite some time. Sorry to hear this unfortunate incident your sister passed through.

If she can lay her hands on the SIM pack, password to the SIM is not hard.

Just follow the steps in the settings and use the PIN/PUK code, you should be able to apply the password.

I always advise everyone to do so. It's 99% safer and best offensive security.

How's China today?

Update:
Thank you all for your helpful comments.
Please how can one password their SIM?

If it was a LOAN from a salary account then the money would be paid into the same account, how did they access the funds from a POS?
If your sister did not have a SIM lock on the SIM card that receives the alert then they can put in another phone and get funds via USSD. What is surprising is how they accessed the funds via POS if she did not disclose her PIN.

Go to Settings on your phone.

More Settings
Encryption and Credentials
Set up SIM card lock
Lock SIM card

Follow the remaining directions. Remember that devices differ in navigation

PS: keep your SIM pack handy for continuation.

Oh my God ! I think they planned to rob on a Sunday for a reason, so before one could report to the bank it would be too late. This is sad , we should learn to love one another instead of causing so much pain to them.

Add a pin to your SIM card, every time you switch off your phone and power it, the phone will ask for the sim pin, before the code for the phone.
These guys may have bypass the phone security, without switching off the phone, I think the best solution is to have a separate banking sim, that one can keep safe, also install soft token and bank apps on the device that one used to go out with.

[quote author=muller101 post=105569388]One phone having face recognition, finger print and code lock. I won't say anything

I guess she didn't lock her sim. If you lock your SIM, it is sometimes difficult to access your bank details. The problem was her ATM cards in the bag. It was enough for them to do exploits which they did.

Re: Armed Robbers Used My Sister's Bank Details To Collect GT Bank Loan by BlissGod: 11:37am On Sep 07, 2021
She made a big mistake, i añways tell people, the moment your phone is stolen or ATM card, call the customer care immediately and inform them. Call your network provider and give them details, they connect you to bank and immediately block your account.

Sorry about that.

Go to Settings on your iOS device.
Tap on Cellular.
Locate SIM PIN and tap it.
Toggle the SIM PIN to ON.
Input your current SIM PIN if the SIM wasn’t locked.
Enter a new SIM PIN to lock your SIM card
Make sure that you remember it!

Yes it's very possible for the criminals to take a loan from her bank with her details, it's very unfortunate that she was at the wrong place at the right time, everybody here please hear this, dont link your account to your phone number, and anytime you want to check your account balance please use the ATM that way your money will be safe
