Or a CCTV in the car which gets uploaded to Uber’s server. Most people will not agree to have their pictures taken easily.

The client should be aware his/her picture has been taken. That's the assurance itself. Otherwise, they won't be qualified to use the service. It's as simple as that.

It would have still happened. Read it: They wanted to kill for a car.

These measures you mentioned would be useful for apprehending the killer and not preventing the murder.

I don't think you fully understand the implications of what I said, unless you mean the criminal (in advance) wish to be caught.

Completely destroyed! I don't understand why the youths will be failing themselves after the govenment has failed them.

The glamourization of cybercrimes, prostitution and a host of others have furthered contributed to the decadence.

Sometimes when I see some youngsters being displayed by EFCC for cybercrime ..I wonder so deeply that it's is over ....never ever trust any young guy that your spirit does not trust

You see them in clubs and everywhere , in posh wears and using high tech fones but their source of income can't be assured to be legal

Girls on the other hand the same thing , they sleep around and do hookups and are very lazy , they hang around malls and lounges looking for who to take them home , you check ur social media app you see them listing themselves for prostitution ...

Learn a trade they won't , but they can sleep around for iPhone and other stupid thing ...even if you give such gal 300k to start a business they won't be able to nuture any business to profit out , they will squander the profit and show off in birthdays hosting and frivolous activities

Nobody is perfect but when this type of play comes to stay too much ...it's annoying

Heart of many people are evil.

When yahoo plus failed they resorted to killings. These sets of age group that have been disillusioned with fast money will end in untimely death and waste of lives.

That's why we said all of them are the same, from cultist to bandit, kidnapper to yahoo 419. They are all agents of devil. And none of them shall have peace.

Why is it that most agberos and criminals in Lagos are Yoruba Muslims?
Because they prefer Ile kewu to real schools and Ile kewu can't fetch them sustenance.

I won't be surprised if these boys work for a syndicate. I suspect this may not have been their first car hijacking... Their error of judgment was that they were unable to trace the car tracker... so they were sure the car had no tracker... that is why they went to celebrate. kudos to the guy that installed the tracker... I recalled when a tracker was about to be installed the guy doing the installation told me to leave the car, reason being in case of robbery incident i will not point out the car tracker wiring system.

The mechanic should also face the same punishment as the boys. The intended buyer should also be fished out...

The practice of tinting uber cars should also he looked into... if you are a uber driver and your car is tinted it is advisable you do not work at night. If you are engaged in any form of struggle other road users would not be aware and so can't raise alarm or help you out.

A red flag is when pick up point is at a bus stop and also drop off is another bussrop or public relaxation hotzone, when it is at night, my advice is to avoid such orders when the passenger are 2 males.

RIP.

death penalty should apply to these crimes. the lawmakers are just lazy or they are the sponsors of these thugs !

teepain:

I just told my wife that perhaps bringing back the death penalty for violent crimes would be a good idea.

While I was growing up I recall that many armed robbers were publicly executed and televised to serve as some form of deterrent to potential criminals. Perhaps, that prevented the prevalence of crimes.

Nowadays, the ages of people who commit these crimes are usually between 20 and 35. And government need to do something fast about it.

he was supposed to start a new medical JOB on monday. at times I think these DOCTORS can be greedy and don't think at all. after completing their studies, they think they should live like KINGS and QUEENS. he did not think that picking someone at that time of the night was not safe.
with their strikes, they call their patient parents, and tell them to come pick their children. they show little concern for people and only think of money.

they receive higher allowances in youth corp compare to other students, and even their pay is comparable to some bankers, but they are never satisfied.

what a real pity !!

don't say most ' people ' it's most Men. When we are talking about prostitution you people will call women you won't be saying 'people" or " Nigerians " or " society" . But when it's male crime you will start generalizing . Violent crime is mostly by far committed by men - so let's use the proper terminology.
Women are involving themselves in all type of criminal activities just to make money these days.

Absolutely. I think the growing concerns about "the right to life" plays a huge role in politicians developing cold feet with regards to death sentences. However, people who have absolute disregard for the right of others to live shouldn't be allowed to live too. Such should not enjoy human rights maybe animal rights. Wicked souls.

the system breeds their type. For every 100 young educated nigerians 200 more are not. Basic education in Nigeria is useless for fending for oneself in Nigeria today. For at least manageable self-sustenance you need a firstdegree. The system is designed to look like if have a degree your family is privileged and from the upper class. The level of uneducated young nigerians is baffling, to worsen it all their source of education is the get rich quick genre music stars whom they model their life after. Danger signal is that you that think straight from hardwork self-improvement, living clean is their biggest target because they are deeply paranoid towards big men children. Only solution is education should be made very cheap
For all.

The killer would probably be caught before he/hails an Uber if (1) He/she is on a wanted list having committed/ attempted to commit a crime before and is known to Uber or (2) If the driver is alerted during the trip about the history of the passenger.
This means government database, coordination between security services & uber, high-tech tracking etc. Nigeria doesnt have that at the moment.
Without these, a driver is as good as dead once a killer enters into his vehicle- unless the mercies of God steps in.
It is similar to the Jumia story of someone killing a dispatch driver (https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2017/03/29/jumia-releases-statement-death-dispatch-rider-see-graphic-photos/). We dont have a comprehensive and realtime database in Nigeria.

Sorry bro, but you have a misunderstanding about what I suggested. Of course, I know we don't have a good national database. But Uber can maintain a database of it's own users if they want. If what I suggested works with national database, it means criminals could even be caught by the driver before they board the ride.

The foolish people had stolen the car that he was hustling with, that is enough to disorientate someone, why did they kill him? I'm pained hearing this type of news which is unfortunately common. Same with POS operators. It seems we always pounce on the weak in Nigeria. If someone is bold and daring, he/she should rob the politicians robbing us.

Bro, I agree but you are assuming that the criminal is known OR has a criminal record that was sophisticated enough to get into some records. It might be successful petty theives and "one-chance" operators who chose to commit crime with his fellow petty criminals. That is why they panic and kill people. These ones are so petty & traditional that they didnt know cars like that could have trackers.

Only a petty criminal would, of course, engage in such theft. But no matter who the thief, his chance of getting caught would be high. By the way, let me know your own suggestion on how Uber should solve this type of eventuality.

My suggestion would be similar but perhaps a bit more thorough; A complete vetting of passengers like drivers are vetted, down to provision of referees, scanning of work ID cards, educational qualification documents, international passports, etc. This has its downsides as it means there would be less customers as it starts, but the safety and the thorough vetting process will be pushed as Uber's USP and its customer base should increase over time.

This nairaland sef. Which 10.pm is too late? Some of you live a different reality from the others and you interpret everything from your narrow worldview.

There is an entire night life happening across major cities where thousands and millions of people move around, including Lagos and Abuja, for which 10pm is still 'morning' for that matter. People are moving and grooving 2.am, 3am, till morning. Guys, hot girls, men, women, all sorts. Somebody has to provide transportation services for this category of people, since not everyone would use their own cars to move around at that time. Not everyone moving around such times own a car. Night life is a full economy on its own, except there is a curfew declared or there's a full blown war going on. Besides it is usually more stress free and more profitable for any transporter (including ride hailing operators) to operate in the night economy.

Bad things happen at any time. The key thing is to be smart about it. The victim in this case should have known better than picking 2,3 shady looking guys (trust me, they would look shady to any discerning omo boy) at such an hour. He was clearly not street savvy and probably not suited to such a business at all.

All in all, God knows best. Na God hand all of us dey in our daily activities, whether morning or night.

You're a joker. Most likely a salary earner (with the typical work ID card mentality). Start a business; be an entrepreneur or think like an entrepreneur and then see how ridiculous this your suggestion is.
