If you have driven your car without horn for some days, you will attest to the fact that having that horn working somehow propels a level of confidence to do things you wouldn't do when without it. It means there are some 'shades of emergency' as you put it that we just need to be patient or more careful, rather than rushing and believing that honking horn while at it will ensure our safety. For instance, driving and approaching a Tee junction or +cross road, you'll realize an individual order than to approach it with caution and obeying traffic rules/procedures will approach at a high speed blaring horn from a distance warning everyone at the junction that he/she be given right of way irrespective of whether it ought to be his/hers!
Same applies to neighbours rushing to out and beckoning on their family members to hurry and join them in the car- they blare horn. Examples abound and it's what I believe Reno is trying to draw attention to - the abuse!

I realised car horns makes most Nigerians drive recklessly.
One day I went for a function ,my car horn was very Okay.. immediately after the function, I entered the car only to find out the horn is dead .

I thought of how to drive on the road with all the bike , Keke and other road users,I felt like parking the car,on a second thought, I zoom off.

I couldn't imagine that I drove this car without horn extra carefully back home...
I drove it again without horn for two days because my schedule was very tight to go see an electrician.

I never believed I could drive so carefully..

After the incident, I concluded that we abuse car horn in Nigeria.

Wrong! The car horn is used for many things including calling attention to other road users for so many things. At least we watch films and same applies even in UK & USA for those that have not travelled.
Has he just realized this when he went to school in UK, after leaving in USA for several years.

I disagree with you completely.. I live in Lagos and drive also.. Our reckless driving is number one in the world.. If everything is well organised then govt can now look into that..


A country where people sleep at traffic light or those that get carried away because of too much thinking and they are about to hit you, you must call their attention with something and for me in Lagos, I don't joke with the horn.. Behind some trailer you will see HORN BEFORE OVERTAKE

Very correct!. In Europe, one can stay for 6 months without hearing the bleep of a vehicle's horn. The only horn/noise one will hear is siren from ambulances on medical evacuation.

You are right, I once used my car without horn for two weeks, I realized that I was more careful and I flash my headlights more especially when I want to overtake heavy vehicle which I usually use horn to alert.

A Nigerian human rights activist and lawyer, Bemigho Reno Omokri has revealed when he realised what car horns are meant for, WonderTV Media reports.

Posting on his Instagram, Reno disclosed that he never knew that car horns are meant for emergencies until he went to a university in England.
He said when he was in Nigeria, he thought a car horn was meant to make the car in front of the driver move faster or it was meant to call the gateman to open the gate.

Reno stated that, in Nigeria, people use car horns to greet.

It's not worth it learning bad habits from us, as doing that would be a sign that they are not progressing. They have found the right balance for the use of horns and we just create a lot of noise pollution and strees unfortunately.

The manner in which we use horns just shows the deep issues we have with - everything jagajaga - no lane discipline, impatience, bad roads, limited walkways, goods on roads even unemployment (people wandering). Too many problems
