Like I said earlier, there are things which should be open for wider debate. The local content issue is one of them. It should not be left to the Executive alone let alone one single individual and I use these examples.

The debate for local content is credible. Abuja lost water supply for close to three months at the beginning of the year due to a single component that could not be flown in from France due to Covid restrictions. That is dangerous. Imagine if the national grid faced similar challenges.

However on the other hand. If we waited for local content to handle the Covid pandemic including ventilators, PPR and even vaccines, we would pay a heavy, untenable price.

What constitutes a quest for self sufficiency, security and empowerment squares up to emergency and survival.
Such decisions are beyond what any leadership should monopolise.

Yes, Mr Kyari did well in cultivating the deal, but it was not handled well and I repeat such secrecy only germinates suspicion.

I like your argument but the people in the executive are elected to make important decisions for the people. If we allow all decisions to be open to wider audience all the time, the govt will become impotent.

I don't see anything wrong with asking for local content, this one of the ways to build our own local production. These countries ask for these all the time, hence it's no big deal to ask for the same.
Sometimes you have to bargain hard. If they refuse, another company will eventually step up and take the deal, especially the Chinese.

Abba kyari was so commited to the actualization of this deal despite opposition from GENCOS, DISCOS, electricity stakeholders and other bribe seeking politician. Some folks were celebrating when Abba Kyari died. Unfortunately, just as Abba Kyari died, the Siemens deal died too. He was not the problem afterall. RIP ABBA KYARI

The idea was started with Sowere during his failed presidential campaign he highlighted Egypt successful implementation of 15,000 MW for $6.7 in 27 months, Fashola picked it up and confirmed that his ministry of power was in consultation with Siemen.

Abba Kyari wasn't supposed to be involved in the Siemen project, this was the responsibility of Saleh Mamman and the Ministery of Power but he was so useless that Abba Kyari had to accompany him to Germany

The question is who appointed Saleh Mamman?

If Nigeria has capacity to offer 40% local content how come we haven't figured out the solution ourselves after 60 years? Now we have our 100% local content but zero electricity.

40 percent local content is doable, we just need the technological know how on putting these together. The main reasons for poor electricity production is poor planning, greed and selfishness. Most of the people involved in the process are greedy and mostly care about what is in it for them just like the rest of the citizens.

If Nigeria had the capability to understand the technical know-how the country will not be spending $55 billion on professional services. Let just accept that Buhari and his crony are out to destroy Nigeria and Nigerians are prepared to suffer and smile.

A review of Nigeria’s current account data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), reveals that Nigeria and its corporates spent a sum of $55 billion on foreign expatriates for business, professional, and technical services in the last 10 years.

This accounted for about 84% of the total business expenses paid abroad during the period, which is about the highest cause of capital flight in Nigeria in the review period for any specific item.

Professional and technical fees are amounts charged by individuals or firms specially trained in specific fields in science, technology, and other technical areas. Some of these services include management services, technical, and even legal services to list a few.

I thought the Siemens deal was last year. I remembered Late Abba Kyari caught Covid from the trip across Europe around the time the deal was signed shortly before the lockdown. The subsequent lockdown for almost the rest of the year would also have affected commencement of the project. I think it's too early to call if the deal has failed.

Igbos always speaking up against the corruption and injustice in Nigeria.

The hope of a greater Nigeria lie in the hands of Igbos, take it or leave it, Nigeria became a carricature it is today after the Civil war that Igbos were pushed out of federal power and Hausa-Fulanis took over with the assistanship of the Yorubas.

If you want Nigeria to get back on track, ask the general Igbo population to give you a Presidential candidate and vote in that person and watch how Nigeria will be transformed but if you make the mistake of handpicking any of the corrupt rogues parading as Igbo politicians in the likes of Rochas, Orji Kalu and Co, then be prepared to have another failure like Buhari

Thank you Chimamanda. Right questions for the right person at the right time. Hopefully , Merkel would revert back with a very detailed information as to what went wrong. Sane people in this messed up enclave need to know what went wrong with the siemens power deal.

Today they are shifting attention to Egypt just to buy time. Meanwhile Siemens is responsible for the Egyptian power success story. So APC government want to ditch the master and go with his apprentice.

People like Chimamanda can only try, nothing changes at the end because Nigerians are not yet ready for change.

I'm surprised that 125 people liked your dumb comment.

From tbe report it was clear why the project failed... Nigeria wanted over 40% local content protection ... Something that was going to protect me and you. And not that the returns from the power project will all be repatriated to Germany...

Yet, it is the the FG you blame for not acceeding to a deal that does not favor Nigeria ...And 125 idii0ots like you liked your comment.

Dont be sold on that. He went to negotiate the deal in a way that will favor the North as they believed the work Fashola did is not according to their Northern agenda. They even found a way to smear him with bribery allegation so as to take the power ministry off him and handed it over to a career local government engineer who they just sacked after his gross incompetence can not be covered anymore. What did Abba Kyari understand in power and energy matters.

Does the Hajiya managing Nigeria’s finance ministry even understand or care about the Siemens deal that Adichie was questioning?
Guess why the prospect of Biafra restoration gives goose pimples to some Oyibo people.

You were probably the only mugu that read the report on what happened to the deal when it was released by aso rock. If what went wrong with the Siemens power deal was public knowledge, did you ever think that Chimamanda will not be aware? Was the deal going to be done on behalf of Nigerians or not? If yes, when it failed, Nigerians who own the deal deserve answers. Chimamanda asked a question her government was unwilling to answer.

The real idiot is you who think mere conjectures should replace government accountability to her subjects.

Some of these mumus can't even read and comprehend.
The deal is having issues because the govt is demanding 40 percent local content. That's a good thing but the wailing and crying mumus can't understand why.

Some of these wailing fools just enjoy crying about the govt without understanding the content of the news or story. Now you wonder why the country is in mess,
With confused mumus like these, Nigeria has a long way to go.

I wonder oo, you'd think people would be pleased govt wanted 40 percent local content when it's same type of people that always moan about why indigenous expertise is never considered when contract are awarded to foreign companies.

It may be that at this stage the Nigeria demand for local content are unworkable because we are not yet ready but at least praise the sentiment.

Party politics or the shear joy of cussing is everything and blinds Nigerians to the benefits of objective reasoning.

Good comment. Too early to say the deal failed. Lockdown may have impacted progress. Chancellor Merkel clearly did not have the facts and she promised to revert. My guess is that funding is a key issue here. If the German govt or any European agency is expected to fund, then they are right to demand a bigger share of the contracts, same as the Chinese are doing with the railways as key financiers. A little patience to unravel the delay.

Personal victory for Chimamanda Adichie, but very unfortunate for the black race.

An intelligent black asking a white lady why electricity is lacking in Nigeria.

It is more honorable to either build our own technology or copy others technology to give Nigeria electricity, as there is no evidence that God created German with electricity.

As Werner von Siemens started Siemens AG so can smart Nigerians like Chimamanda Adichie can start another enduring technology company, that will not only solve Nigeria problems, but Africa.

Those blessed with high intelligence should use it to help the society.

Complaining can never get Nigeria and Africa a seat at world table.

Op, this your headline is unnecessarily sensational. Don't qoute Chimamanda out of context. She asked the German chancellor why the deal did not happen. But your headline seems to suggest that they actually struck a deal with our fg and later failed to honour it.

Allow Merkel to tell us what happened.

Kudos to you, headline is misleading..

Merkel made salient points.

The govt has refused to fund the project. You invite somebody and sign an infrastructure deal and refuse to provide money.

You ask for 50% local content on a project which you have zero knowledge about. Do you think this is farming ?

I'm still studying the characteristic of stupidity in the Oxford Dictionary of Modern English.

Merkel asked her the location probably because the project had no base or project office provided by the country.
