I hardly take any food offered on visits, no matter how hungry I am. It's one habit of mine that many condemn.

It's called self respect, everyone is hungry but you have to respect yourself so as to accord respect by your hosts.

Because they don't want to seems as if they came to beg you food, You the owner of the house must used your brain and know you need to serve them food and drinks without you asking he or she

From my perspective, There's no big deal in eating even if I'm a new visitor in your home but people relate with people based on their culture..
This issue is common in Yorubaland and probably some other tribe as well.

It is called self discipline here.

Re: Why Do First-Time Visitors Act Like They Are Not Hungry When They Are? by Nobody: 8:30am On Sep 18, 2021
Because some people only offer you food out of politeness. They may be actually disappointed if you accept. Not everyone who says “you meet me well” or “come and join me” actually means it. Just like when I ask a person “how are you doing?” I don’t expect to actually sit down and listen to your problems, It’s just courtesy.

So yeah, it’s sometimes appropriate to decline offers of food in the home of a person you are just getting to know or visiting for the first time. In any case I don’t even think it’s safe. Only eat in the homes of people you know well and trust that they mean it when they offer you food.

It's apparently due to the African mentality

In Western States, you'll see a family gladly invite another family to a dinner with them without thinking they're gluttons

I also don't think that you should accept food, from everywhere it's being offered.
