So this morning while checking around, I saw an unwanted neighbour who has been responsible for the disappearance of a few chicks in the past. But this time around, he was dead.

He must have eaten the poison I bought for him. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

After observing them, I discovered they are not 100% male after all! undecided
There are about three females among them but they could be more but not more than five I believe.
Anyway, this does not affect my satisfaction of having many males staring at me every day grin

Well, male lines are usually 80-95%males. Quite difficult to get them 100%. I think for yours which is up to around 95% is a good one. Congratulations

Great job pal! Keep it coming brother.

What is the average weight of your birds at 5 wks? And what is the mortality rate?

Thanks for the kind words. I haven't measured their weight really. I have lost two (due to an accident and that rat took one away.) Now left with 50.

Okay. That's good. How long do you plan keeping them?

Very good. Hope you burnt it?

Coz what I do anytime I catch any of them in my property is to wear gloves, then use scissors to cut their legs one by one.

After that, I will get a flame burner and burn of sensitive body parts like eyes, nose and anuus.

After that, I pour fuel and burn the whole body. Then leave it for neighbourhood cat to consume.

N.B
You have a nice thread by the way. You can write. God bless your hustle.

As soon as they are good for my target market. I planned selling them off from week 7 to 8.

LOL! You must be a member of the SARS (Special Anti-Rat Squad) smiley.
The pain induced by the poison was enough for me. What I did after was to kick out it's carcass into the street for birds of prey and cats to feed on.

Thanks for the commendation!

With an appreciable knowledge from rearing cockerel (that are so agressive and snaps at any food in sight), for 6 months before maturity and rearing some Ross 308 strain from Sayed ( which took like three months to mature), I feel it's time to experiment with an all-male Ross.
So, I began my search here on NL but got a little info on my quest.

What about their meat?
Is there any difference between the taste of cockerels and that of broilers?

Which company did you buy the chicks from?

Cockerel (not male broiler) is tougher than the broiler meat.

This evening, the cage was cleared after it was earlier done on Thursday.
As they grow older, their consumption rate increases like Kilode?

A bag I got for them on Thursday evening is almost exhausted save for a few to serve them as breakfast before dashing out to restock tomorrow.

So if can can stock as many bags as possible to avoid emergency buying, do so if you have the means. Just an advice.

A 25kg bag that used to sell for 4500 in January and rose to 5400 in May is now 6600 (t-fare included) but these broilers don't send you.

Once they are hungry, you will hear them sing an endless sympathy tone unti you submit to their cries undecided

Cockerel's food conversion is slower and they too can eat! You have to keep them for six months before they reach maturity and won't grow in weight. Feed them more and they grow more feathers instead of meat like Broiler.

At this stage, cockerel will still be on starter feed and will look quite small.
Here are pictures of matured cockerel I reared then from July 7 to December 2020. The stress ehn, can be killing and very aggressive with their beaks and nails !

Apologies I didn't give an update for a while. I haven't been around but glad to be here.
Well, they clocked 7 weeks on Tuesday and unfortunately, one passed on cry.
I noticed it had emanciated and grew lean. Underneath one of it's wing was darkened as if there was no blood in it.
I gave them all a mixture of antibiotics, anti-coccidiossis and multivitamins but it seemed it had been infected heavily as it grew weaker.
So, the following day, I had to put it out of the misery.
Population now 49.

Yesterday, I noticed another one was not looking as strong as the others sad . On closer examination, I saw that it wasn't looking healthy, it was eating and drinking but was lacking stamina and couldn't struggle with others.

So, I dashed to the vets and bought some anti-coccidiossis, anti-CRD ( some were acting as if their nasal were blocked) and antibiotics, measured a teaspoon each, added multivitamins and mixed all up with water.

That's what they're drinking now.

Here are pictures of a few at 7 weeks.

This is the sick one. Looks lame and is lean and also doesn't eat and drink much. It has been stampeded on but it has been separated from the rest. It now looks less agitated. It standing on it's legs now and appears to be showing me that it's strong-willed and will survive.
So, I'm giving them all anti-coccidiossis+crd+antibiotics.

Well, I lost many of them, 32 in all inspite of the treatments. Even the ones that appeared to be male turned out to be female.
