SmartPolician:
The part that no one can go to the Western countries to open a dorm account is FALSE. I know many Europe-based freelancers (they call themselves digital nomads) who own US dollar accounts in their countries.

Closing dorm accounts is like blocking one of the key channels through which Nigerians bring foreign currency into the country and it is not a good decision. Nigeria needs dollars desperately.

Digital Nomads are not necessarily freelancers though. A lot of them are actually full-time employees with all the 401k and other benefits. They are allowed to work from home and most (somewhat illegally) work from a home abroad. But you are absolutely correct that they have dom accounts in the foreign countries where they are domiciled

What he is saying makes sense in a way, only if CBN can ban funding of Dom accounts locally. Anyone who needs forex for any reason can approach the bank and will get it at the official rate.
This will automatically stabilize the naira against dollar.
It doesn't really do the economy any good if someone can withdraw dollar from a bank and then exchange it outside.

Clout chasers. It would make sense what the law maker is saying if the CBN prevents local funding of the domiciliary accounts from within Nigeria (by cash or electronically). It should be tied to receiving inflows only. The only exception would be for banks tying outflows approved to the account but not lodge it in.

Allowing it to be funded locally is the reason why many hoard forex. Trust me if they do this, rates would drop drastically.

This can be managed without allowing the operation of a domiciliary account but by using a bank's internal account tied to your normal naira account.

We have no business withdrawing dollars or pounds to go exchange outside a banking environment. BTA/PTA should only be collected at the airport departure environment after checking is all done.

When CBN introduced the Naira for dollar promo and allowed withdrawal locally in dollars I knew this would happen. The market would never be saturated enough to bring down the rates in Nigeria. We are a different specie and those kind of policies don't work here cheesy

Are you making these assertions because of the ailing Naira? Because even in the US people have Euro or GBP accounts and can withdraw in those currencies. Your suggestion is fixing the symptom not the root-cause of the problem

How will international transactions take place then, or you're oblivious of the fact that a lot of goods & services you enjoy are a product of international trade. If the CBN is not ready to provide forex to these businesses, how then will they source it?

The solution to preventing people from hoarding in there Dom accounts is to tax monies that are being hoarded. The current policy of limiting dollar deposits is fueling the crisis because most businesses are now relying to only unavailable inflows to send money.

There's nothing like taken to cleaner. He expressed his views regarding what seems to be a problem to all of us. If the so called "experts" like the one that responded to Koro now have been quiet all this while because they probably have no clue on what to do but suddenly found a voice now to criticize or rubbish others opinions in a very unfriendly way like this then it shows how far behind we are as a people. Koro is not paid to do this for Nigeria. It's not his job. He only expressed his views and what he thought might be the solutions. Everybody should do in a crucial time like this especially the experts. Sometimes out leaders need us to point them in the right direction and this will only happen when people speak up. Trying to bully others is not the way to go on matters that concern all of us as a nation. Ire o!

Amara Nwankpa @Nwankpa_A, the Director of Public Policy Initiatives at Yar'adua:s foundation replies Federal Lawmaker, Ibrahim Obanikoro on his call for CBN to close all Domiciliary Accounts in Nigeria. Recall that Ibrahim Obanikoro, a House of Representatives member, had tweeted:

"I am not the CBN Governor but at this moment, I'm of the opinion that CBN should mandate that all dorm accounts be closed for the next 12 months. Let's see the effect on the Naira. After all you can't go to any of the Western world and open a foreign currency account. Your opinion."

Of what use is the forex brought in that just lay idle in an account for God knows how long?

Of what use is the money kept in an account that can not be borrow/sold to those that actually needs them at the point of their needs?

We are in abnormal situation,if that abnormal solution been proffer by anyone is the way out so be it

You need to understand that such restrictions have more negative impact than positive impact.
That will encourage more people to go the crypto way. You can't force people to keep their hard earned money your own way

Such policy can never stabilize Naira. This administration did such I think in their first tenure. It had no positive impact.
The only solution is for CBN to be apolitical with their policies. They either have to flood the market with more dollar to prop naira or find a way to improve export in the country to have higher fx inflow

I personally agreed with obanikoro to some extent. Let's put it this way, can we have the people in diaspora send in dollars as usual and allow only the banks sell it to people who only needs it for either traveling purposes or something more important?

This will totally cut out aboki hoarding dollars.

Nobody should have access to it except the banks, the people sending in their dollars should sell it to the banks only.

They need to ban dom account because Nigerian politicians are abusing it by using it to hoard dollar thereby causing scarcity.

Instead of going after the criminals the best solution is to ban Dom accounts, very stupid thinking. After banning Dom accounts how do you want freelancers and forex traders to earn their own money? Seems you want to render them jobless so the country will have 90% jobless youths.

God bless you immensely for this babe, we have no business withdrawing dollars from the bank!

Whoever is sending in his/her foreign currencies should sell them to the banks.

no one should have the right to trade with dollars, Naira is there, except for people traveling or have something very important to do with foreign currencies.

I was thinking of this idea when Bitcoin transaction was banned. The CBN could have instead exploited the Bitcoin trade by allowing only Bitcoin inflows as long as the Bitcoin ins't purchased with Naira. As a matter of fact, there're many such channels to encourage such inflows; example, allowing Nigerians receive PayPal money. This alone could bring in so much needed dollar.
