At the end of the day, the subsidy has to go.

My own is that it should have gone in 2012. By now, we would have been long since over the worst...plus back in 2012, government would have had far more money for palliatives for the first 2-3 years.

I leave with this quote on why keeping the subsidy is bad.

sauce; Fuel subsides in Nigeria: they are bad for the economy but the lifeblood of politicans. Originally published in the Conversation on November 4 2021

Summary

Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer, has come under fire from the International Monetary Fund as well as World Bank for the heavy financial burden it carries in providing subsidies for fuel and kerosene. The criticism is rooted in the belief that the money could be better spent on other essential services, such as healthcare and education. 50 years after subsidy is removed, things won't still change. The money from subsidy removal will still be looted. What then?

you are a dunce without capacity for logical reasoning. You want subsidy gone with lip service being paid to the revamp of local capacity to refine. Why should Nigerians earn in Naira and buy fuel refined and imported in dollars. What is wrong with people like you. A cancer to this country. You can sell your conscience for a penny

At least we got the subsidy albatrosses off our necks.

So long as we remove subsidy and see more investment and gowth on domestic refining, then APC can go to the pieces for all I care.

Nigerians and deceit.
Diesel that is fully deregulated isn't up to 360 yet and it is quoted to be more expensive than PMS. If that's the case, where are we getting the 340 naira per litre price tag from if PMS were to be fully deregulated?

Shame!!

The reason why people get mouth for GEJ time was because oil prices were at an all time high and that blinded a lot of people to the damage that subsides could do.

All they saw was oil is above 100 dollars a barrel, why can't we afford subsides? Meanwhile people like Noi and sls who were actually running the economy could see the damage, but people won't listen

Buhari has had oil prices consistently below 86 dollars a barrel and as low as 24 dollars a barrel at some points since he took power..so even though NLC may make some noise they know that this isn't the high revenue days of the GEJ adminand they know that there is some truth when the government says they cannot adequately fund subsides

If we keep subsidy removal we would end up taking more and more loans and losing billions to the subsidy monster.

Better read about subsides. No matter how you try the subsidy monster must be fed.

Isn't this the same thing this government did when they banned importation of rice? Any sensible human being would first make sure that local production is enough for consumption before banning the importation, but they banned it and right now, rice is so expensive.

They want to do same with fuel. They promised 1 refinery per year, but all we've been getting are excuses. What prevents them from making sure the refineries we have are working at maximum capacity for local refinement, and then building more refineries before removing subsidy? The modular refineries you're talking about, why aren't they operational and why aren't there more?

Exactly. We all know subsidy must go. Heck, na them dey against am that time. But why now when things are so difficult for the citizenry? How much is minimum wage? How will someone collecting 30k pay for 340 naira per litre price? 30k sef na only federal government workers and very few states? How many other states are implementing 30k minimum wage? These are the issues

I agree with you that the government are a bunch of thieves but that does not change the fact that there are 4 to 6 other refineries nearly ready in addition to Dangote big refinery. There is also the BUA guy's own which can refine everything but PMS.

And NNPC is hurriedly fixing up its Warri and PH refineries

If we keep subsidy we will end up in more and more debt. Subsidy costs are going to shoot up to 3 trillion next year. Oil crude revenues are also not stable and cannot fully fund our budget. Oil has been too low below sustenance level. So subsidy has to go.

And I hate the idea by the way. But we effing have no choice.

Where fuel prices can be as high as 400 to 900 naira per liter.

And the tax rate chops your income very well.
