Ha! That's really crazy. Do you mean one has to pay about half the price value of what you ordered in order to get it. You are definitely wrong and are encouraging this unjust exploitation. Who does that? Pay half the prize for duty? It wouldn't even happen in North Korea. Even Kim won't be that heartless.

Brother, big big grammar on Nairaland will not get you the items free.

You made a valid point here... No reasonable importer in all d markets in Lagos at present, declare d actual worth or quantity of goods imported... My advice, just pay up and pick your goods. Ensure you do d needful next time by pleading with the shipper to under-estimate d worth of the item before shipping.
Yes, even the sellers will often reduce the value. They just need you to tell then ie for those that don't ask.
Dont forget they want to encourage you to buy more from then next time.

I remember at DHL office in ikeja airport, customs call this my guy to come pickup his iPhone 11 promax he bought used at 300$ in 2019. They billed him 315$, and they value the item as new, even though he has the pro forma invoice. They told him if he doesn't pay, item will be seized.

The guy was just crying
It's not true.
They can never seize it.
He should have opened a dispute on the platform he bought it. The item will be recalled and he can get his money back.

Bros truth be told, there's nothing you can do about it. All the logistics companies charge crazily now, no thanks to the government of the day inflicting hardship on the citizens.

where can you check it
JADESOLA15:
To be honest, always check the custom duty rate of whatever you want to buy before you complete the transaction. If you check the rate, taxes, etc The duty they asked you to pay is in order.

Another option is to ask the seller to reduce the value of the item for custom declaration.

Customs no dey manufacture figures, they go by the goods classification.

I'm going to be apt and sincere here. So I ordered a musical studio equipment on the Aliexpress 11:11 sales day. The total sum I paid for the item at checkout was $280(114k naira). Free shipping was part of the deal, so it was mouth watering. Normally, I would have used the service of Nairaland trusted shipping agents like Justi4jesu, but she doesn't do Aliexpress the last time I checked.

Fast forward to today, I was called to come pick up my parcel at the local post office. The item was stated on the listing to be shipped through 'Aliexpress standard shipping', I don't know how it ended up in the care of EMS. I reached there, and some sort of invoice was brought out. The attending agent looked at the papers for a moment and told me I would be paying about 39,600 for the clearance. What!!!

Please if there's anybody who has an idea how to go about beating down this obviously outrageous charges, kindly help out. I can print out the issued invoice on the bought item as proof of price if there's a need. Thanks.

Lalasticlala and other mods, I will be glad if this can make front page for more awareness of this unjust situation. Thanks

Just tell the person to return it to the sender. Then on aliexpress, tell the seller you didn't receive it.

Why not use your Operators loan facility, no collateral. OPAY and Moniepoint can offer you N500,000 to a million. That's simpler than begging.

Ha! O ga o. With people like you, this injustice will be encouraged. You think if Nigeria produces a usable equal to what I ordered, or even something close - I would have bothered myself ordering from abroad? So whenever we buy things we can't get locally, they should slit our throats for it right?
Not sure there's nothing you can do about it. Once bought some IEMs in 2020 for N22400, NCS billed me N15000 as duty. The same set of item came in a month after and was charged 7500. Arbitrary charges.

I was advised to call for review which I did but was rejected. Just pay and forget. Na dem de cause people to de cut corners.

Not sure AliExpress will approve refund cuz of duty as they always put a caveat about duty. They may advice you to negotiate with seller though. Some sellers do put a caveat in the last line under description page. In such cases, you're on your own.

This is unbelievable, it happen everywhere walahi... For Magistrate or high Court, Ikeja, if you go for filing of process, you will pay amount running into 9k but you only see two receipts of 1400 and 1200 which is summed up to 2600.. I asked them where is the remaining money going to... The cash officer will call for the next person, she was unable to give a concrete explaination. Everywhere, I swear... Land, survey, ministry of physical n regional planning... It is well.

I couldn't believe my ears, so I told her to please pass me the document for observation. I saw the estimated value of the item was put at #202,000 naira. How come? It stated on the paper that the custom duty was 10%,which is #20,000. Plus all other trumped up charges, it summed up to #39,600. Plus 1k5 for shipping from Lagos, over 40k. That's about $100, using the current official exchange rate.

I bought a $280 dollar item and I'm being charged $100 for collection? That's like 43% of the value. Even if I am stinkingly rich, which I am not; it's insane to pay such amount. It's like buying a 1milli worth car and paying 430k to clear it. I am an obedient citizen and all, but inflating the price of the item I bought just to cash out big through tariff screams corruption to me. I am very sure just a fraction of the amount will be remitted to government coffers.

Please if there's anybody who has an idea how to go about beating down this obviously outrageous charges, kindly help out. I can print out the issued invoice on the bought item as proof of price if there's a need. Thanks.

Those guys are theives I have an experience with them when I wanted to send a parcel to US earlier this year, they charged me higher than what they wrote on the receipt given to me. I don't know your location but if you can offer to see their manager and have a direct talk with him concerning the challenges you are having, I beleive that will help out.

Customs Corruption is the main reason why Smuggling is on the increase.
Nigerians prefer to clear their goods through neighbouring countries, than through Nigerian Ports, because the Customs will extort them to no-end.

Small time, they will say Smugglers prefer to engage them in Gun Battle, are we surprised.

The best advice I can give anyone shopping online is don’t select the cheapest one select the standard shipping always it will come to your home. The clearance fee is influenced by the price of the item and if it’s electronics it will be high . The cheaper it is the lower the fee usually N500 and then anything $100 and above is percentage. They now offer combine shipping with the standard orders.

There is something and more u can do to get the amount reduce . I had same issue 2 times this year and the stress made me to stop sending thing to my people from here in south korea via courier service due to nigeria customs dubious charges. To cut long story short.

You have to back to custom or ur local delivery company and make a demand for duty review. Im sure they will tell u what u need to provide for customs to get ur duty review for u to be able to get charges reduce.

We live in a very exploitative country where every person who occupied a cubicle as an office is a thief. Happened to me when I bought some phone tablets from AliExpress to distribute to outstanding students in my community. I was called to the post office and asked to pay over 26k. I told them to send them back so I will be refinded but I was called aside and some funny deductions were made and I ended up paying 12,500. It's a vicious circle trying to operate from Nigeria.
