There is a fire service station right there in surulere and 20mins from that street yet fire service came 1hour later and with malfunctioning equipments.

What a useless state Lagos has become.

Yet Lagos claims to be a mega city? More like a highly corrupt and mismanaged state. undecided

Can smoke detectors put out an inferno??

Thank God you said inferno. An inferno such as every fire starts usually as a small smoulder. The purpose of fire detection system is to get an alert before the fire gets out of hand. I've lived in many foreign countries, and even the smallest building you would imagine has fire detection system.

I have same in my house, and I can honestly tell you that it alerted me when I slept off in the middle of the night while cooking beans. The pot was a total write off though, but not the building. I had to appologise to the neighborhood for the alarms the following day.

Like I said, it's high time Fire service department compelled buildings to have fire and smoke detection systems. I'm sure most modern structures in Lekki and VGC have it.

Also if there were fire extinguishers with trained fire marshalls in the building it may have been possible to extinguish the fire before it became uncontrollable!

I get ur analogy now bt how does am incompetent fire service pass such important instruction and policy? A fire service that came to fight a fire 20mins from their office bt came after 1hour with faulty equipment? undecided

It is a systemic problem. Individuals can try and secure themselves that may help bt not always work in certain scenarios so u still need an effective fire service department.

It's just like Nigerian govt fighting corruption when corruption has already taken place. To nip corruption in the bud, we have to plug all avenues where people take advantages of it.

It's the same thing as fighting fire. You have to detect it early on time to be able to control it. Hence the need for installation of detection systems. Research had it that the first 3-5mins of a fire is the critical phase. Fire may still engulf in those period, but the good thing is people can promptly evacuate to avoid fatalities.

I understand we are still a developing country, but we need to start catching up with the rest of the developed world gradually. Some of these detection systems are not that expensive. Their usefulness greatly outweighs the collosal loss of buildings and fatalities that could happen in a fire.

Talking about fire service department,....they will always try their best to arrive on time. (I'm talking as a trained fire fighter here). One thing we must understand is that public fire service department are more or less LAST LINE of defence to a fire. Whatever you can do within the 3-5mins of a fire to contain/extinguish a fire is the very ultimate.

Thanks for the above. Fire Marshalls / Warden is also very important. I will suggest any building not equipped with detection system should hire a fire marshal/warden that will routinely carry out a safety rounds/checks around the house especially during the night. If there are lifeguards for swimming pools, there should also be fire Marshalls/wardens for buildings too.

Every inferno starts as a small smoulder.
A "simple smoke/fire detector" does nothing other than to "detect and alert". So once the alarm triggers, you hurriedly and extinguish/contain the fire before it's out of control.

An advanced smoke/fire detection system will not only detect and alert, but will also shut ventilation systems and activate fire fighting medium installed. Such you would see in sky-scrape buildings where the sprinkler system would automatically activate having received command from the fire detection system.

Oga the fire is due to generator explosion.
In this case, your yeye smoke detector is useless.

I didn't know the cause of the fire. My write up is just for an ideal situation. And talking of generator....it should be sited well off the living area. A generator should be in a generator house.

Makes me even wonder why a big house like that doesnt have a general generator, that is well sited.
Instead, each tenants are allowed to have different kind of generators with questionable wirings.
Poor planning by the landlord in that regard.

As for siting generators at the wrong place, Many dwellers of top floors of storey buildings in Nigeria now put their generators at the balcony upstairs.
I just shake my head.

I know all this bt this doesn’t replace a proper fire service department. Every fire doesn’t start small or from smoke some are from explosions.

I’m sure uve seen buildings go up in flames in uk and other developed countries even though it’s not rampant bt it happens and the fire service department is alerted.

A fire service must be responsible and that is not negotiable whether u are 3rd or 1st world.

You are very correct. Part of their responsibilities is to ensure and encourage quick detection and alertness to fire.

Another reason I am beginning to fall in love with the idea of flat roof garden terraces, instead of conventional roofs. All that roof timber just became unintended fuel for the fire.
In senegal it is the normal design for homes and it is rare to find a house with a zinc roof.

Flat roof is not a good idea if you live in the tropics with heavy rainfall. Flat roofs are usually in the Sahel and Sahara where there is little rainfall like Northern Nigeria, Mali and to a lesser extend Senegal.
Re: 3-Storey Building On Fire In Surulere, Lagos by Nobody: 6:50pm On Jan 02, 2022
You are right Senegal has less rain fall than Nigeria, but it doesn't mean that flat roof terrace cannot work in Nigeria. It's more to do with what Nigerian house builders are accustomed to, than anything to do with climate. Most people don't even see it as something they want.

But ever since learning that mosquito don't fly high, the idea of chilling on top of my house in the evenings free of mosquitoes is very attractive to me.
