First, there is no breed like Nigerian shepherd, else you were joking.

Second, the only way you can tell what other breed or breeds make up your dog is through a DNA test. Your vet is just speculating to make you feel better.

Your dog is a Mongrel/ Mutt. Dont be offended Its not an insult, its the proper name that describes Ekuke's and every other mixed breed dog without proper identification.

What you have is a cute pet, love it & care for it. Regardless of breed people will admire your dog because of how you take care of it. If we all in one accord tell you your vet is right it wil not change how the dog will look, only you can do that by loving it. Peace!

Basenji is a breed of its own. They are hunting dogs bred in Central Africa. Major characteristics of Basenji's are a curled-up tail and they are bark-less dogs, they only howl or make yodel like sounds but cannot bark!

Nigeria has no distinctive breed, our local dogs are a product of constant mix breeding with no direction or purpose. Todays various dogs are a result of purposeful mix breeding over years to produce a dog with specific traits. For example, the Boerboel was made by mixing Bullmastiffs and Bull dogs in the late 1600s by Dutch settlers in South Africa, for the purpose of having farm dogs as large as a Bullmastiff and as stocky and stubborn as a Bulldog to protect livestock. it took until 1980s before a movement for the recognition & standardization of the breed. Finally in 2006 it gained official recognition in the AKC (American Kennel Club) and by 2015, full AKC recognition.

It takes alot of time, dedication and procedures to develop a breed. Something Nigeria has not even started to do in creating awareness and proper recognition of our local breed, we prefer what others have created and bastardizing it.
