Well from the frontend developer community that I have seen on Reddit. Majority of them(more than 70%)say it’s dumb to even test a candidate on data structures and many of them have been frontend developers for more than 10 years.
That they have never had to implement those DS stuff on their day to day work. That it is even useless 99% of the time for frontend developers. Though few of them think it’s very important
It's not even a requirement for backend development but as a developer you would be seriously limiting yourself by not learning data structures and algorithms. It's the path to the very high paying jobs. Jobs that pay 10 million naira a month salary can be gotten by grinding DSA for six months to a year. It's pretty much a straightforward path

Dey there if you know what some people are earning you will be humbled. I went for a programmers party late last year and I was the poorest nigga there. Come and see the kind of cars people brought to the venue despite being told repeatedly not to drive down there.

Omho shame catch me when I came home. I really envy those who started their coding journey 2014/2015 when the tech industry in Nigeria was just taking off. The very smart ones are multi millionaires stroke billionaires in naira now.

Chai. I just wish we could reconfigured some young people's brain to think in the right direction and not yahoo yahoo thinking.
If they invest the time they use in scamming into other ventures such as programming they will be better off.

Same here. I'm just starting out and wish I saw it earlier. You see those people doing web designs for 20k, 30k, they are major confusionists. They were they earliest people I was exposed to.

Who are those at that billionaire table? let me guess? those startup kids @ paystack, kuda, andela, flutterwave?
I remember circling around cc hub in lagos around 2010-11 and there was some hotshot programmer who wanted to build his own phone OS. I don't know what became of him. I'm old enough that I remember thinking 2011 was already way too late to get in the game.

Thanks for all the kind work you do in educating & guiding folks here. I rarely post, but come occasionally to read your very insightful commentary.

Most of the crypto startup guys are in the naira billionaire category. Patricia has so much money that they gave employees cars. Even oil and gas companies dont do that.

The bolded above is so true and I'll liken it to sending 100 job applications everyday (as long as you have mastered or near mastered a particular IT skill-set which could be evidenced by having passed the certification exams in that tech field) and 100 job applications a day is possible as most IT jobs only request a CV ans short cover letter unlike other fields where unnecessary lengthy time consuming applications are still demanded in 2021 !!!!!

Hopefully more Nigerians will suss out that you don't need a degree to earn a very good work from home IT salary in todays tech world.

India's President probably had a crystal ball when in 1957 he prioritised IT education in his country and this had paid off such that India is not only the top destination for offshoring IT jobs from Europe and America but the top IT companies in silicon valley have uncountable Indians as their top programmers - case in point Oracle and Microsoft.

With IT, the sky is the beginning of your earning potential and you can literally earn untold wealth in IT depending on if you are ready to learn your craft to MASTER level and even if you don't want to stress your brain by continual reading / learning you can still earn good pay once you pass that first certification exam in any in-demand IT skillet.

There will always be a skills shortage in IT as there are not enough people to cope with the speed, volume and complexities of the IN DEMAND technologies that todays tech wizz kids are churning out sometimes from their bedrooms and sometimes they are still teenagers.

IT is one of the few fields you can earn $100,000 or more yearly while working from home all year round dressed in your pajamas so I'll encourage Nigerians to give it a go instead of spending too long or too much money on a Masters degree (or even a first degree) that may not be able to put food on the table.

You can always later do a degree or a masters degree part time while earning good money in an IT job and this is only if you feel the need to do so.

The payback period if you at least pass the introductory certification exam for an in demand IT skillset could be as little as 3 months if you are willing to spend at least 12 hours a day 7 days a week learning / practicing the IT skillset you have chosen and pass the introductory certification exam within those 3 months . You can actually then continually earn money using what you learnt in those 3 months for a long time to come as long as you learnt it properly and did not take short cuts.

Linux is not a piece of cake and as a Linux programmer, you can master a lot of other IT skill sets with relative ease. I don't know a lot about front end development but from my opinion, it seems that if it interests you, then going for it with the same vigor with which you learned Linux is the way to go.

Men oil and gas glory days are over. I know people in my network who are not even up to 20 who got internships at faang. These are level 100 Nigerian students already in mad fucking money.

The great thing about tech is you don't need to know anyone to get a job. All the jobs I have gotten I just applied I was invited for interview did well and asked to resume. For oil and gas if you don't know anyone you are bleeped.

This is not true. At least not for the biggest Gas company in Nigeria. I know loads of people who were hired by this company who did not know anyone in the business. All hired purely on merit. It's the same with Shell, Mobil and Chevron. They hire purely based on competence

Well I don't doubt you Sha but when I graduated with a degree in marine engineering and was looking for work I couldnt even get any vacancies to apply to. Like there was none so what I did was just send unsolicited applications to shipping and oil and gas companies. There were zero jobs advertised anywhere but people were taken everyday.

In tech all I do when ever I am unemployed is go on LinkedIn type my chosen stack and apply to everything I can find and start interviewing and sooner or later I will have a job.

If you are talking underpaid contract jobs in oil and gas, I won't be able to comment on that. But you see those direct hire roles with the companies itself, forget it. They hire only competence. Even staff cannot influence the process. Of course in referring to the multinationals there (although a lot of the local also try to focus on competence). If we are talking local Nigerian Oil and Gas businesses, they aren't different from the local counterparts in Tech. It's a Nigerian thing. But for the multinationals, na competence o. And the recruitment process is very meticulous. The person that I know personally that was hired by the gas company in question said to me "When you meet your colleagues in the office, you go know say you jam fellow competent people". They hired only 0.01% of the total application pool.

Oh yeah for graduate trainee its competitive. When SEPLAT was hiring, 20000 applied for less than 50 positions. The NNPC hiring that was completed recently had thousands of applicants. The thread on nairaland has over 1000 pages. If Exonmobil is recruiting today, the number of applicants will be over 10000 people and thats me being modest but this a Nigerian thing sha. In the US, people dont kill themselves dying to work for such places.

However, it is still easier getting a high-paying tech job than it is getting a high-paying oil and gas job even if you aren't a genius. No tech company cares about your grade or GPA or where you went to school. You went to MIT, solve leetcode. You went to umudike university, see leetcode solve am but in oil and gas if you didnt graduate with a first class you are pretty much bleeped.

Forget o! Oil companies too don't care about CGPA. It Nigerian HR that use first class to reduce the number of applications. And that holds whether you are applying for a Tech role in Interswitch or an engineering role in NLNG.

Do people work at Interswitch still? An elementor WordPress developer role which you wouldn't even write code at an American agency will pay 2k USD. Senior devs at Interswitch don't earn that and you will code like crazy and you need first-class to get that tongue tongue

Oh I get what you mean. In Nigeria tech companies don't care about grades. I have never seen it on any job post.

Haba! That's not a fair comparison na. A barber in US will earn $30 maybe $40 an hour while a Dr in Nigeria will earn maybe ₦500k a month doing back breaking and brain draining work.

And yes, Nigerian tech companies care about grades. They may not put it in the advert but the Applicant Tracking System is setup to have that as a metric. I know because I have set up an ATS for one and the HR people insisted that the system be enabled to allow them filter by that.

I get your point though that IT levels the field heavily. A lot of people in IT easily earn over a million a month, working for foreign companies. Whereas to earn that ₦1m a month in Naija na Oil & Gas you go dey look.

Lol...tensa make we matter for matthias. Na dem sabi whether they need First Class upper sef. Personally though, what route would you recommend for people looking to get into IT. Especially entry level folks. A lot of people are diving into Programming but there is ample opportunity in other areas like IT Support or System Admin that don't necessarily require as much experience as Programming roles. Why do most people feel it's best to start in the deep end of programming?

I will guess it's just the information out there. Almost everything out there is centered around programming. I didn't even know we had other things in IT like support, systems admin until I started working as a developer.
