It is not issue of greed, if it was an issue of greed, Ukraine wouldn't have become an independent republic, the issue is clear maintain neutral status for Ukraine, stop Eastward expansion of NATO, NATO has lost relevance in this century, what led to Cuban missile crisis, wanting Ukraine to join NATO so they can deploy missiles into eastern Europe, can US accept that, it is this NATO issue that will eventually cause WW III. When NATO was founded in 1949,the Soviet Union and it's satellites also founded Warsaw pact to balance the equation, but after Soviet Union collapse, Warsaw pact was dissolved, despite the fact that there are still Russian allies, NATO needs stop Eastward expansion to defuse tensions in Eastern Europe.
