On Friday March 11, 2022 I placed an order on jumia worth N598,557. This order was placed in the early hours of Friday before 7am. Unfortunately the confirmation mail I got was a cancellation of the order that payment was not received. I had actually made a transfer using my mobile banking app (access bank) to a wema bank account with account name quickteller business payment. This was the account that came up when I checked out on jumia to make payment.

I waited till 8am to call jumia and tell them what just happened. I also reached out to them through their twitter handles. They requested for the receipt of transfer which I provided. I was also told to go to my bank to verify if the transfer was successful. I quickly reached out to my account officer who ran a check on my account and confirmed that the transfer was successful. I told jumia the response from my account officer and they said they would relay the issue to their finance team for proper investigation.

On Tuesday March 15, 2022 I got a mail from them after investigations. I was told to return to my bank and lodge a complaint and as well fill a form for reversal. The resolution of the complaint from my bank after two days was that the transfer was successful. I was told to tell jumia that they should contact wema bank to verify the transfer.

The problem is that in all my conversations and series of calls with jumia they have vehemently dodged questions related to wema bank. A couple of their customer care agents I spoke with confirmed that the account belongs to them. Jumia haven't provided me with any evidence to show that they didn't receive the money. They haven't told me if they contacted wema bank or not. This all smells of foul play.

It's more than a week now and they are still with my money. I have shown them receipt, my statement of account up until Tuesday last week and also the image of what happened on checkout on their platform.

They have told me they will carry out another investigation. I have told them I need evidences and especially if they have contacted wema bank. I also told them that definitely I will not relent until I get my money back. I'm also considering legal action. Hopefully it doesn't get to that but I'm ready for anything.

Please I'm seeking for your thoughts and ideas on how to resolve this.

You no see Amazon. You have not learnt your lesson.

My Experience, all in the year 2020
Jumia canceled my order after 3 weeks. The ordered item cost about 350k and I paid the money the moment I placed the order. They disappointed me after 3 weeks. Their reason was that the item could not be shipped into Nigeria because of Covid-19 lockdown. But before I placed the order, I saw available for delivery on the product details.

After the cancellation, I gave Jumia the benefit of doubt by ordering another item that cost about 450k. This item also has, in its description, available for delivery. . This time around, I called Jumia customer-care line to confirm that the item was really available for delivery. The agent who spoke with me assured me the product was already in Nigeria for delivery once I pay for it. I paid the money and waited for another 3 weeks. Eventually, Jumia disappointed me again and gave the same reason (not shipped to Nigeria because of the lockdown). This clearly shows that either the agent who claimed the item was available was ignorant of the item condition or the agent was a trained scammer.

The one that made me write Jumia off was when I bought a mouse from the Jumia. I ordered an invisible-optical mouse. Jumia delivered the mouse and invisible optical is carved on the mouse. CARVED, not even a sticker. But the mouse was not invisible optical when I turned it on. Invisible optical means the mouse will not show any light. This makes the battery last up to a year or more if you do not use the mouse for heavy applications like Maya, Blenda and Coreldraw. The one Jumia gave me shows light even as invisible optical is carved on the mouse. My younger brother has the same brand and model of mouse and his own does not show any light. The design, label and shape are the same. But the one Jumia delivered shows light while my brothers own does not show any light.

I spent time and money calling Jumia for about more than a week before Jumia took the mouse. And Jumia did not return my money immediately. The money went through Jumia wallet and took at least three working days before I could withdraw the money from the wallet.

Jumia is a reputable shopping website. I reckon it's more of a bank issue than any other thing. If the bank is yet to give them a report, they may not be able to do much.

I suggest you exercise some patience while still maintaining communication. They will resolve it eventually.

Demand for the transaction reference from your bank and send same to Jumia.
You will definitely get a refund.

You should go to Wema bank and lodge your complain as well... Seek yo see their boss and asked that they confirm the account name and the details of their transactions from your account. Even tho this might be very difficult for them to listen.

That's what I'm asking from them. They need to tell me what the situation is with wema bank. So far they have said absolutely nothing. Access bank already told me that the transfer was successful. Jumia haven't provided me with anything.

Just yesterday evening I got a call from one of their agents telling me to go back to the bank and fill a reversal form again. I told her no that I have already done that. I told her to report to their finance team that I need to know if they have contacted wema bank to verify if the money got to the account and with evidence too. Nothing so far. It's quite sad.

I have sent them the transaction reference. As a matter of fact the reference code is part of the details in the receipt of transfer.

It's not my responsibility to contact wema bank on this issue. It's jumia's responsibility. I have told them I will involve cbn's consumer protection department on this issue. I will do anything within the law to get my money back.

I mean the money didn't mysteriously disappear.

I know it isn't your right to get to that extent.... I was only trying to contribute to see if that could help...

I don't know how to purchase items properly on platforms like amazon, bestbuy, eBay etc. I happy to learn.

From your experience you narrated it just shows that they have a bad reputation. It's the first time I took the risk of paying before delivery and this is because that option no longer exist on their platform.

There are times I will be speaking to their agents and they will just hang the call on me. It's been a terrible ordeal for me.

Jumia scam

From your message, I guess Quickteller was the payment gateway, maybe you should send an email to Quickteller.

Obviously it was. The account I made the transfer to was quickteller business payment domiciled at wema bank. Writing to them is what jumia should do.

The only thing they keep telling me is to return to my bank. All I'm interested in now is for them to tell what the situation is at wema bank. That is, whether the got into the account or not.

How well do you trust your account officer?

They have a way of converting such transfer into a domicile account... And if you give up on fighting for it, thy go home with it ...

that's how i got a response from jumia stating the money would be reversed between 3-7 days.

I will say to a good degree. You know trust is quite expensive in this country. He knows better not to mess up because it is a cooperate account. I will not give up till I get back my money.

I have all the essential details and evidences with respect to this transaction.

I would advise you write to Quickteller and share the transaction details with them to avoid this back and forth with Jumia because obviously funds didn’t get to Jumia, it just might be stuck at Quickteller’s end

Please call them out on Twitter o and when they tell you to dm them, refuse. Tell them to settle it on the TL

I might just consider doing this but I just feel jumia should do this since I have done my part by contacting my bank. I feel jumia aren't been transparent with me.

When making orders on Nigerian sites, never pay into virtually generated bank accounts. If an error occurs, the process of reversal is quite complex.

That means I transferred money into a virtual account and not a real account??

It's my first experience and usually I pay on delivery but that option is no longer available.

Jumia must have gone through their account history and not find your payment thats why theyve asked you to write to your bank.
I once tried funding my bet9ja account from uba mobile, uba reported successful but bet9ja was still giving insufficient fund. I waited for about 2weeks and there was no reversal. I had to go conplain n fill a form in the banking hall for reversal. I waited another 2weeks b4 d money was reversed.
I strongly believe its from your bank. Just go and apply for reversal.
