i think its better if the change is done in secondary school

Yes, it will be better. Federal government colleges or catholic-owned schools. But definitely, not any of the private ones.

The best book to help your child learn how to read, spell and write in English language in the shortest possible time.

Please don't change their school rather allow them to mingle with SERIOUS MINDED POOR KIDS from your church/mosque or neighborhood.
If they are up to 10yrs and above you can allow them visit them at home with your CLOSE EYES on them (your kids).
I have seen many rich kids who know what it means to live in naija. They know and understand what an average Nigerian child undergo.
So allow them to mingle with children who are from a lower class family and make sure you keep a close on them.

Sir you intentions are very clear and reasonable but it could backfire and end up truncating the lives of your kids, your kids are not aware of the roggedities of life which is not really so bad,

Enrolling them in a public school could turn out to become the worst mistake you can ever make in raising ur child, they are already very naive so it would be easier for them to be influenced negatively.

A peace loving and naive ajebutter is faaaaar better than a hardened notorious and street smart ajekpako.

Don't expect your kids to turn out successful just because you did while growing up in the street region.selah

Good! How did I miss your comment? Well said bro

Very important. I want them to understand the Nigeria's sense of thinking and doing things

Do you have this type of book for kids to also learn French? I want to support my kids literacy in French language.

Allow them continue with the school but always take them to the village when they are on holidays.

They will meet their mates there in the village, they will play together and one day, fight go burst!!

Your kids then would know there's a big difference between six and half a dozen.

Nice one Davash. They enjoyed themselves during the Christmas. We have a very large compound in the village which provided them ample space to ride their bicycles with other kids from the village.

Most of the village neighbours were coming to our compound just to play with them. I love the bond they built with them and they have been asking me when we will be going to the village again to see those their friends.

Going forward, travelling to the village for christmas is going to be a must now for us. I enjoyed the villa wella and they did also.

You make them Ajebo then want to put them in street to drive home a point. Just be prepared for the hating the less privileged kids will hate on them.

My worst fear bro! Poverty makes Nigerians to be unnecessary angry and easily transfers aggression.

I am not considering public schools again. Most likely will be in a private school being run by Catholic church. They just completed one near my neighbourhood.

Myself, I attended catholic nursery, primary and secondary schools and the quality of education and formation was superb.

When you started training them the butty way before what were you thinking or expecting? If it were abroad, I'll say cool because everything is serene and calm over there but in naija where it is every man for himself kinda lifestyle that is predominant. Its not easy to blend in.

Anyways, taking them to govt school will not be a good idea because their academic performance will drop and it will affect them badly because of the low standard.

I'll say, enroll them in other children social gathering or groups where children from all works of life belong. Thats the only societal change you can make.

Secondly, let them learn to run errands to short distance places with instructions and guides to crossing the roads and knowing how to walk by the side of the road away from the vehicular lanes. Make sure to go with them a few times before letting them go alone.

Focusmind, just send them to a good government boarding school when they're ripe for secondary school. That's the best and easiest way to toughen them up.

You can also reduce some of their comfort like AC and constant car rides. Make them only use the AC when you and your wife are around, send them on errands, make them walk to church for the most part and stuff like that.

I was also a big ajebo before attending a government boarding school for 6 years, my life changed after. grin

Good observation. I have already started all that you mentioned and I am very happy with the outcomes. I intend putting them in a catholic school instead of government. I attended catholic owned schools from nursery to primary and to secondary.

Nice points you raised there. For now, I would not be comfortable sending my seven year old daughter on errand across the road. They involve in all social activities with kids, especially in their school. I am taking them to a catholic run school instead of government public school.

Don't train your children by any Nigerian standard please. Send them to the best schools and send them abroad Uni. Training them for the global stage is better than training them the way we were trained

Nice point. Global standard is good but the basic foundation of formation are still necessary. Not withstanding the problems we have, there are still valuable lessons we usually learn as a Nigerians and I wouldn't want that to be lost on them.

They are six and five and my wife hardly allows them. I have instructed them to drop their plates in the kitchen whenever they finish eating rather than keeping it and waiting for Nany. My daughter always try to do her bit in cleaning but my son, very unconcern. Only to cross leg and be watching meeky mouse. I am trying to be tougher these days and they could see it in me
You would be glad you did.
Be careful, do it gradually.
One, it boost their confidence and self esteem.
Let them do house chores. Let them interact with the environment. Don't be too hard, do it lovingly and gradually.

Sounds like a nice ideal, and then they are grown it’s better you make them attend federal unit or state own and not private uni.. I am just saying my own ooo
So ASUU can finish them abi? If you don't shut up.!
Private university or abroad, anything else is bad!

I love this idea of kids being multilingual. Learning languages helps the brain development of a child. I myself am currently learning French from an app- Duolingo- so that I can teach my kids in the future another language other than Yoruba and English. Chess for kids is also superb in their thinking capacity and brain development. You should try chess for kids...maybe there are videos on YouTube that u can make them watch.
Apart from making your kids tough and strong physically, equip them intellectually. Introduce them to musical instruments too...these three are very good in brain development for kids, and helps increase their IQ. Dancing is also proven to be good in brain development especially ballet dancing but it seems u don't like the idea cheesy
I wish your kids the very best!

These are fantastic ideas. They are already into languages, Taekwondo, swimming and Scrabbles. My son is insisting he wants to do coding and robotics in school instead of music , which I got the kids iPad and he is doing well at it in their school. I will have to download more French language app for them. They are now 8 and 7 years old, respectively.

I'm in my late 20s, though not the least pampered like yours but I grew up feeling something was missing, I didn't really blend with others due to how we were raised. In fact, I do get angry ay my parents for kind of shielding us. The world is tough, so shielding a child is you being wicked, you won't be with them forever, how then do they cope with the demands of this harsh world?
Had to learn street smartness in the university which I believe was kinda late.
Enrolling in a good boarding school at jss level would be perfect too.

You are right. This is what most middle and upper class parents do. They shield their kids so much that most finds it difficult facing the real world when they are eventually "free".

Now, I walk with them to the church, much to the dismay of my wife. I have insisted that they make their bed every morning, which they have been consistent on. I take them down on road walks for them to feel the "Nigerian heat" and develop love for exercise, understand their immediate environment and put them on enquiry to ask questions while we walked on the road.

I am happy with their progress. In terms of academics, they are always within the top two in their classes. Their school don't show overall class position, but shows position in each subject offered per term.

I need to inculcate the street smartness and sharpness of mind and character in them, with much emphasis on cognitive abilities. These are the enablers of success and not necessarily academic know-how.

Thank you. I forgot to type coding. Intellectually, they're on track! Your son is interested in tech, I suggest you provide more learning tools for him in this area...tools that are more than what the school provides cos I don't trust the Nigerian education system...lift him gradually to the point that he'll advance more than what the school teaches...lift him gradually to the international standard. I'm really glad to what you're exposing them to. It's awesome!

If not for my dad, mhen, God knows how "lazy" I would have turned.

Nna bu ugwu (fatherhood is a source of pride) says my local adage. Most times, it is easy to sense the absence of a father figure in a child's development.
