The Federal Government has commenced the payment of minimum wage arrears, which it owed lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and Academic Staff Union of Universities as part of efforts to end ongoing strikes by the unions, The PUNCH has learnt.

The National President of ASUP, Dr. Anderson Ezeibe, and the Chairman, ASUU FUTMinna, Dr. Gbolahan Bolarin, confirmed this in separate interviews with our correspondent in Abuja on Thursday.

The PUNCH reported that the two unions are currently on strike following the inability of the government to meet their demands including the payment of minimum wage arrears and release of revitalisation funds, among others.

While ASUU commenced its strike on February 14, 2022, ASUP is currently on an initial two-week warning strike.

Confirming the payment on Thursday, Ezeibe, however, said that was just the beginning.

He said, “The government has started responding. They just started paying the salary/minimum wage arrears, the one they have refused to pay.

“However, that is just one of the demands, so we have not reached anywhere. They have not attended to the others, but I can confirm that people have started receiving alerts of the arrears owed.”
Also, Bolarin, said, “Some of my members got alert of their minimum wage arrears; their salaries are still pending.”

Meanwhile, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology’s management has announced that the school would resume academic activities on Thursday, May 26, 2022.

A circular which was signed by the Registrar of the school, Kayode Ogunleye, partly read, “Upon the directive of the visitor to the university, the management hereby informs all staff and students that the university will continue its academic activities for the first semester of the 2021/2022 academic session on Thursday, May 26, 2022.

This is the right step at the right direction. Any Government that is not interested in the progress of the educational sector is indeed not interested in a better future for the people.

This is good, but more needs to be done!
The main salaries of lecturers need to be adjusted upward and the EAA included in their salaries.
Paying arrears is good but it solves little out of the problems.

I still wonder if it was Peter Obi or a man like Chukwuma Soludo that be on top of the affairs of this country, will these calamities befalls us? Even in educational sector.
A responsible government will always take education as a priority concerned.

Mohammadu Buhari's brain is wrecked he is not even fit to be a village head.

Nigeria why?
why?
Omenkalives why?
Helinus why?

Why present to us a dead man as a president?

Let's just say at least they have made a move to resolve and that's fine even though it took a lot of time

But I thought ASUU are still making consultation... because we av not hear any official statement from them... because some media outlet said they will gave fg some time to implement their agreement and suspend d strike. While some media outlet said no agreement yet....

From what I know, ASUU is doing NO consultation!
The demands of ASUU is very clear and direct:
1) Increase salary
2) Pay salary with UTAS
3) Pay revitalization fund
4) Stop establishing universities anyhow

Out of the above, 1 & 2 are the most important, all others could be met partially! Currently, FG is paying arrears of minimum wage, which ASUU did not even really asked for, and nothing yet on all I listed above.
If 1 & 2 are not addressed by the FG, then their will be nothing for ASUU to go and consult on. Mind you ASUU is not interested in promises, nothing like "go and be working, we will do it"!

Hope should not be lost yet!
The whole thing is 50-50.
The problem here is the FG. Currently they seem to be trying to solve the problem by cutting the leaves and leaving the root of the problem there!
If FG addresses those problems (salary increament, payment of salary using UTAS) stated earlier, then resumption is sure.
