Boris Johnson narrowly survived a confidence vote last month in what many call a pyrrhic victory. The scale of the revolt even from his own Party still leaves him wounded and will likely keep speculation swirling he could throw in the towel.

His 59 per cent support margin is much worse than Theresa May achieved just months before she fell on her sword. The confidence vote follows anger over Sue Gray's report detailing lockdown rule-breaking in Downing Street.

Today, Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid have resigned from Boris Johnson's Government, citing they cannot continue in good conscience. As the most senior person in government after the Prime Minister, Mr Sunak's resignation is a big blow to Mr Johnson and Mr Javid has played a major role during the pandemic.

This is a move that not only mounts enormous pressure but could spell the end of Boris Johnson’s leadership after months of several scandals.

Prime Minister,

It was a privilege to have been asked to come back into Government to serve as Secretary of State for Health & Social Care at such a critical time for our country. I have given every ounce of energy to this task, and am incredibly proud of what we have achieved.

The UK has led the world in learning to live with Covid. Thanks to the amazing rollout of our booster programme, investment in treatments, and innovations in the way we deliver healthcare, the British people have enjoyed months more freedom than other comparable countries.

We have also made important strides in the recovery and reform of NHS and adult social care. The longest waiters are down by 70% and, as you know, I have been working hard on wider modernisation of the NHS. I have also developed radical new approaches to dementia, cancer and mental health, and prepared the Health Disparities White Paper which will set out plans to level up health outcomes for communities that have been left behind for too long.

Given the unprecedented scale of the challenges in health and social care, it has been my instinct to continue focusing on this important work. So it is with enormous regret that I must tell you that I can no longer, in good conscience, continue serving in this Government. I am instinctively a team player but the British people also rightly expect integrity from their Government.

The tone you set as a leader, and the values you represent, reflect on your colleagues, your party and ultimately the country. Conservatives at their best are seen as hard-headed decision-makers, guided by strong values. We may not have always been popular, but we have been competent in acting in the national interest. Sadly, in the current circumstances, the public are concluding that we are now neither. The vote of confidence last month showed that a large number of our colleagues agree. It was a moment for humility, grip and new direction. I regret to say, however, that it is clear to me that this situation will not change under your leadership and you have therefore lost my confidence too.

It is three years since you entered Downing Street. You will forever be credited with seeing off the threat of Corbynism, and breaking the deadlock on Brexit. You have shone a very welcome light on the regional disparities in our country, an agenda that will continue to define our politics. These are commendable legacies in unprecedented times. But the country needs a strong and principled Conservative Party, and the Party is bigger than any one individual. I served you loyally and as a friend, but we all serve the country first. When made to choose between those loyalties there can only be one answer.

Finally, I would like to put on record my thanks to ministerial and departmental colleagues, my admiration for NHS and social care staff, and my love for my family who have been immensely patient in these challenging times.

Sajid Javid (UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care)

Dear Prime Minister,
It is with deep sadness that I am writing to you to resign from the Government. It has been an enormous privilege to serve our country as Chancellor of the Exchequer and I will always be proud of how during the pandemic we protected people's jobs and businesses through actions such as furlough.

To leave ministerial office is a serious matter at any time. For me to step down as Chancellor while the world is suffering the economic consequences of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and other serious challenges is a decision that I have not taken lightly.

However, the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously. I recognise this may be my last ministerial job, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning.

I have been loyal to you. I backed you to become Leader of our Party and encouraged others to do so. I have served as your Chancellor with gratitude that you entrusted me with stewardship of the nation's economy and finances. Above all, I have respected the powerful mandate given to you by the British people in 2019 and how under your leadership we broke the Brexit deadlock.

That is why I have always tried to compromise in order to deliver the things you want to achieve. On those occasions where I disagreed with you privately, I have supported you publicly. That is the nature of the collective government upon which our system relies and it is particularly important that the Prime Minister and Chancellor remain united in hard times such as those we are experiencing today.

Our country is facing immense challenges. We both want a low-tax, high-growth economy, and world class public services, but this can only be responsibly delivered if we are prepared to work hard, make sacrifices and take difficult decisions.

I firmly believe the public are ready hear that truth. Our people know that if something is too good to be true then it's not true. They need to know that whilst there is a path to a better future, it is not an easy one.

In preparation for our proposed joint speech on the economy next week, it has become clear to me that our approaches are fundamentally too different.

I am sad to be leaving Government but I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that we cannot continue like this.

Rishi Sunak (Chancellor of the Exchequer: Finance Minister)

@Sunak, via Twitter:
The public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously.

I recognise this may be my last ministerial job, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning.

Dear Prime Minister,

I write to resign my post as Prime Minister's Trade Envoy to Morocco with immediate effect.

The last straw in the rolling chaos of the past six months has been the unavoidable
implication of Lord McDonald's letter to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards this morning.

Others must square, as best they can, their continuing enjoyment of your
patronage with their personal sense of decency, honour and integrity, but I no longer can.

We entered the Commons together in June 2001. I backed your leadership bid in 2016 and, with reservations based on your time at the Foreign Office that we discussed at the time, in 2019. As a habitual and instinctive loyalist, I have strived to be publicly supportive since.

In February, reflecting on your achievements, I wrote a supportive op ed for the Guardian in
which I said that if you were obliged to leave office you would do so with your head held
high. I would no longer write in those terms.
position has become unrecoverable.

I strongly urge you to resign.

Andrew Murrison (Prime Minister Trade envoy to Morocco)

More resignations.......

One of the vice-chairs of Britain's ruling Conservative party, Bim Afolami, has resigned his position, TalkTV political editor Kate McCann said on Twitter on Tuesday.

The news followed the resignation of two key ministers in Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government earlier on Tuesday moments after he apologised for the latest scandal to blight his administration.

Dear Prime Minister,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you to resign as a Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to have served this Government for nearly two years. Introducing the Northern Ireland Troubles Legacy and Reconciliation Bill to draw a line in the sand in Northern Ireland's past has been a monumental challenge.

Under the leadership of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, we have taken this challenge head on, bringing an end to vexatious claims against our brave veterans and giving victims' families' the answers they deserve.

I also want to thank you personally for backing the people of Stoke-on-Trent North, Kidsgrove and Talke. Levelling up has been a core mission of this government and locally we are seeing the benefits of this, and I will make it my central mission that we will never be forgotten again.

Since being electing in 2019 we have delivered £56 million Levelling Up Fund, part of which will be used to revitalise Tunstall Library & Baths. We have delivered £31.7 million to improve bus services across Stoke-on-Trent and created over 500 new jobs from the Home Office.

We got Brexit done and delivered a £17.6 million Kidsgrove Town Deal which will see Kidsgrove Sports Centre reopen, rectifying Labour's abysmal and dismal record in failing to have ambition and vision for the people I am proud to serve.

I have been a member of the Conservative Party my entire adult life, a party I believe represents opportunity for all. I feel for too long we have been more focused on dealing with our reputational damage rather than delivering for the people of this country and spreading opportunity for all, which is why I came into politics. It is for this reason I can no longer to serve as part of your government.

I will continue to focus on standing up for the people of Stoke-on-Trent North, Kidsgrove and Talke, protecting and preserving our heritage, creating new high skilled and high wage jobs locally and making sure people have access to the very best healthcare and education this country has to offer.

Venezuela will be prepping to host a competition in the International Army Games, Russia’s largest multinational military exercise. Even though Russia is still at war with Ukraine, part of its military is prepping to bring, for the first time, some of these military games to the Western Hemisphere.

In mid-August, Venezuela will host the “Sniper Frontier” competition with the participation of Russia, Iran, and China’s military, as well as at least 10 other nations. In a strategic move that seeks to preposition forward-deployed military assets in Latin America and the Caribbean,

I want to update you all, that I have resigned from my role as Parliamentary Private Secretary, to the Department of Transport.

Trust in politics is - and must always be - of the utmost importance, but sadly in recent months this has been lost.

Thank you to all of you who have written to me expressing your views. I have read them carefully, and taken them into consideration as part of my decision.

I have, and will always, put the residents of Sevenoaks and Swanley front and centre of my work in Westminster.

BREAKING: Resignations now stand at 43.

PPS to the Chancellor, Craig Williams quits
Parliamentary Private Secretary, Mark Logan quits
PPS to Treasury, Selaine Saxby quits

I have resigned my position as a Parliamentary Private Secretary to HM Treasury. It has been a privilege to serve, particularly during the period of the pandemic where we created unprecedented programmes like the furlough scheme to support the country. I am proud of many things this Government has done including the vaccine roll out and our response to the war in Ukraine.

I firmly believe that what we need now, as we deal with the twin challenges of war in Europe and global inflation, is a laser-like grip on reforming our public services so that they work better for our constituents and focus on charting a path to prosperity through what is an increasingly challenging global outlook.

I think the events of recent weeks and months are preventing us from doing that. I, of course, look forward to continuing to serve all of you to the best of my abilities. It continues to be the privilege of my lifetime to do just that. I realise there will be differing opinions about my choice today, please do write to me and I would be happy to answer your questions as best I can.

Claire Coutinho MP (PPS @ the Treasury)

I have today resigned as PPS to the Department for Education.

As most of you will know, education is a great passion of mine and I very much enjoyed working with Nadhim Zahawi and the ministerial team, but I cannot defend what has taken place these past few days – or indeed these past few months.

When I decided to move from being a charity chief executive to becoming an MP in 2019, most of my family and friends thought I was mad to do so. They are interested in politics and know how much it matters, but they wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole due to the hours, the abuse and the low regard in which many in the public – wrongly in my view – hold politicians.

I have said in the House of Commons and elsewhere that as elected politicians we are the custodians of politics. We should uphold the highest standards and act in a way that is best for the country. We should also consider the politicians who will come after us. It is very important to me that we do all we can to encourage good people into politics so that the country is well served, but events in recent months have made the view of politics and politicians worse and will only put more people off entering it, which I deeply regret.

I know from my inbox that there are different views about the Prime Minister, but I do not believe he can provide the leadership the country needs. I hope those who disagree with this nonetheless understand why I have taken the decision I have. As ever, my main focus will remain trying to be as good a constituency MP as I can be.

David Johnston MP (PPS @ Education)
