The $1 million.

The acting Dean of Medical College, University of Ibadan,Prof Adebola Ogunbiyi ,invited all the old students who are now doctors produced by the college to a zoom meeting.

The reason for the meeting was not farfetched.

The professor was sick with worry about the infrastructure decay and rot at the medical college she oversees in Ibadan.

She is aware that the Nigerian government is too broke to fund it, so she came up with a master stroke, which was to tap into the resources and social capital of the alumni produced by the medical college scattered all over the world to give the medical college a facelift.

A Zoom meeting was fixed on Monday, two days ago, and the link was sent to the former students of the medical college.

Starting off the meeting, Prof. Ogunbiyi narrated the challenges and plight the current medical students at the college are facing.

The current medical students of the college need a new hostel and their classes also need to be refurbished.

The acting Dean of the college ended her speech by appealing to the alumni of the college to support her in rebuilding and restoring the lost glory of the medical college.

Her speech opened the floodgates of donations from the medical doctors produced by the Medical College, University of Ibadan.

The donations were coming in trickles.

N1 million naira here

N200,000 there.

Until it got to the turn of Dr. Philip O. Ozuah (attached in the picture), an old student of the college who is currently the President and CEO of Montefiore Medicine in New York.

Philip Ozuah did not say too much as he went straight to the point of making a donation of $1,000,000 (700,000,000).

In his words, UI’s medical college shaped and refined him into the man he is today, so he has the duty to give back to the school.

When Dr. Philip announced the $1,000,000 donation, all of the old students in the zoom session began shouting, "Wow!" Wow..

Even the dean, who called the zoom meeting, was speechless as she did not see that coming.

None of the old students of the medical college could donate again since Ozuah had set a standard they could not match.

From shouting Wow! Wow! The Zoom fundraising meeting came to an end with the closing prayer said immediately.

It should be noted that Ozuah had his medical degree certification at the University of Ibadan and did his internship at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital before he proceeded to Southern California for his Master's program and got his PhD from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

When I tell you people that thoughts from nairaland go far, these are examples.

It's no coincidence this was the very strategy for fundraising for the slow spoke ASUU we were talking about on nairaland last week, a school has proven it works

IVY league schools are funded by endowments.Check the endowments of Nigerian schools they are still 2000 and 5000 naira and has been so for the last 20 years or more.As in what kind of useless endowment fund is that?

-Do annual fundraisers and take fund raising seriously.

-Open think tank sections and have your staff work as consultants.

-Reach out to your old students in high places for grants and leadership on national and international projects by university teams for all sectors , Goverment , private and the third sector.Use your lecturers and students to implement as part of coursework.Thats how schools do it abroad.

Compared to other sectors the officials pay of lecturers abroad isn't remarkable. I have seen their openings for 2000 pounds monthly.Their other through income is from such extra gigs

ASUU and the struggle people be guided

It's a lie, he didn't donate it. I just contacted a friend in the alumni group and this was the reply he gave me

I have personally just spoken to Prof Bola Ogunbiyi of UCH by phone and she strongly denied this story and said that she was never a participant. She is aware of a program to raise funds at UCH yesterday but she was not even present. There is no position of acting dean existing and she is not one. She described the submission as fraudulent and mischievous with political undertone. She wishes to dissociate herself from this and said the public relations officer of the college will soon release a rejoinder. Kindly help stop the forwarding of this. Thank you

Nigeria government has a lot of job to do in the educational sector. Most contracts that our government give to some individuals can be perfectly handled by our universities and this will in turn finance the university and almost make it financially independent.

I personally know of a university that owns a lot of subsidiary like sachet water factory, Bakery, poultry and soap making. You won't believe the millions been made by this school.
I think another problem with our schools is in the area of fund utilization. Corruption has to be dealt with so as to get actual value for money made. To me, our universities can fund themselves at least 50%
