I applied yesterday and I got a message from ALX this morning that I have been accepted for the September cohort. I am a complete newbie to anything programming. How do I get started with this program? Help me please I don't want to drop out.

Lately, I'm more active on LinkedIn and WhatsApp, just case you want us to connect

https:// www.linkedin. com/in/tracy-okorie-8ba64b214

Alx has frustrated on different projects but the recent printf project eh... Omo

That one is on another different level, picture playing a game, let's say COD, as a beginner you keep increasing your level, when you eventually start playing with others, you realize you're a big noob

Honestly this printf project has made me gone through hell back and forth, no jokes! The checkers felt giving errors in certain places and there was no way to confirm where the error is coming from.

I have been updating my journey on LinkedIn and connected with a lot of people. The second group for August cohort already has a lot of people, some from Nairaland and most from LinkedIn. We even had a Google meeting last year just to give a brief introduction to the program and it was really interesting.
Hello. I see what you have been doing here. First, you are one hell of a writer. I envy your writing skill. I have been accepted for the September cohort. I want to hit the ground running as soon as possible. I don't have a laptop, but I noticed you also use your phone. What is the first thing I should do now as a complete novice.

What you call software engineering is at most the backend of web application development or better still elementary software development. Though there might be some overlap, but is is not the real software engineering. The bolded is merely what you must learn to interact with Linux. Now, about 80% of software engineering isn't even direct programming. What I just see there is just a guide to freelance development. Real software engineers usually are not freelancers or contractors. They work in teams at corporations. If it were software engineering, these are the kind of topics you'll see excluding Java, Python, Go etc.

Designing with UML, Reusable Code, Advanced OOP principles, Design patterns, Software architecture, SaaS design on servers and the Cloud, Kubernetes and Docker, Requirements elicitation, Systems programming/ Operating systems, Estimation and efficiency, Domain analysis etc. A lot more depending on the projects you work on.

If you want to develop advanced software whether accessed via web or any platform at all, you can never escape all these. But you'll notice that these things are hardly mentioned in the Nigerian ecosystem. You only hear stuff like Django, REST APi and Node and all other tools frameworks and languages. This is because majority are into web development. In web development you can be a freelancer easily.

If as a web developer, you are called to design a web based software that autonomously controls a production line through a remote server, will you be able to do it? Even though it has to do with a server and a nice interface to it maybe, that is just the channel. The main job is the hosted software at the backend. Those are the kind of things that software engineers tackle. It is called Engineering for a good reason. Just like other Engineering disciplines, It is extensive and takes years to learn not months.
just leave us alone let's do our thing whether it's software engineering or not am excited. Containerization with dockers and kubernetes is devops, even the software as service (SaaS) is more of devops because at that level a software has already been created and is to be hosted in the cloud for people to subscribe to. This alx program is nothing short of software engineering

If really want to be a software engineer then you needn't be confrontational over what I had stated. Web programming and even DevOps are not software engineering. However software engineers do learn DevOps because most software is for the web.

If you really want to be a software engineer then you should look into what I stated earlier. I'm just trying to point things out.

Your facts are right, and most people in Nigeria are majorly developers(build component ) rather than engineers. That's why we don't have proprietary software around here.

But for alx, it builds one to be an engineer. Find attached the curriculum, and get a feel of it.

DevOps is not a skill, but a culture. Developers are chosen to implement that culture with certain skills, such as CI/CD. This distinction is not common between a lot of African developers, because what we have are script skiddies all around .

Yeah but to be an engineer one must take to heart the non programming side of engineering. The design and architecture. That is what brings to life your technical knowledge of Java and Python.

Yes, you're absolutely right about DevOps. I just relate it to deployment and operations most times.

Guys

This message is for all alx students irrespective of your cohort!

Today I noticed a lot of people have been evicted and their account disabled.

My account was also disabled, I will drop pictures now. But the account that was disabled is my former Cohort account (7th cohort) but I'm currently in the 8th cohort so I'm safe.

Here's the thing, even if you have gone far like 5 to 6 months but then you relax and your grades start dropping, you will be evicted! Being in the program strongly depends on your grade.

Today I spoke with many people, some whose account were disabled for not reaching the 80% score. One of them spoke about going for a Udemy course, although I tried to persuade him to re-register but then that depends on him.

Another guy, who is combining alx program with Zuri (Zuri is similar to alx, like a bootcamp different stacks). Guys guys guys please.... If you are trying to combine alx and other bootcamp program, take it from me, you won't make it past the first month! I asked the guy why he was going through that stress and he said because he needs Zuri certificate tongue

I don't even know how to reply to that response cause, Hello!!!!! Have you seen ALX curriculum? I meant the actual curriculum on the daily activities? In just two weeks, you were made to learn emacs, git and GitHub, vi, shell
with projects for each of them and you want Zuri's certificate?

I have tried a lot of materials to be frank, from Udemy, Udacity, Coursera, Cs50, YouTube, W3school, freecodecamp... All these are great materials for any dedicated programmer but why don't you search for Software engineering curriculum in each of them, then you would know how generous and amazing ALX curriculum is.

Imagine graduating with all that skills from ALX curriculum? Being added to the room to help boost your network and job opportunities, putting out that GitHub with projects as evidence of your skills... I mean, am I the only one who sees this opportunity?

Do you know why, after about 30k students apply for the program, only about 3k usually graduate? Because a lot of them were indecisive! Trying to multitask like your brain is a machine, many couldn't keep up with the workload and projects, and you MUST do the projects or be removed, they say beginners can apply but if you apply as a beginner without preparation then you would get frustrated a lot.

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO COMBINE ALX SE PROGRAM AND ANOTHER BOOTCAMP COURSE!!!! it's not! You will easily get drained mentally, forgetful because your brain is trying to process a lot at once, don't stress yourself. You won't have time to learn to make research aside from the materials being sent to you because of the many projects from alx.

ALX projects are no child play you can easily brush just to do another!

When we were told about 6 alx students who were hired by Amazon, I thought it was a bluff until David(who is currently working in Amazon as an software engineer) came to talk to us about his experience. He wouldn't have gotten there by trying to do two program at once. According to him, his was able to pass because...
- His peers (I acknowledge this, very important, asking people for help doesn't make you inferior to them, keep pride aside!)
- Always study ahead (That is why "planning" is part of your dashboard)

Please... If you're going for Alx SE program and you want to make it to the final stage. Get rid of that bootcamp course because certification with projects won't get you a job. Go to LinkedIn or just search on Google for Software engineering jobs and see the opportunities in that field.

You know another amazing thing about ALX curriculum, if you graduate with all that skill, you can work as a DevOp engineer, Data engineer, backend developer, frontend, full-stack. It is very EASY to apply but VERY difficult to reach the end. Yes! ALX is hard! Which is why you should go hard towards grabbing the opportunities before you.

Please how can I get my account enabled too for cohort 9.My account was disabled for cohort 8

Well... At first it wasn't easy but I was able to make it work.
Let me give you a breakdown of how it works and I will drop pictures of how they look like when I use them.

- Termux - Termux for me is like a mini terminal for phones. It has it's limit but when I link it to my sandbox, I'm able to do my projects just fine.

- Sololearn - Sololearn is a very good app for learning and practicing what you learnt. I use it to practice my C coding

And if we start python, I already have an app for it.
Here are the pictures below
- Pydroid for Python
- Termux and

Today was the first day of ALX August cohort

It was watching my kids go to school lol
I have been buried in work and Alx and I haven't had time to post here

Even on LinkedIn, though I have connected to a great number of people

This is third month in Alx Software engineering and my fifth week in Alx Virtual assistant program, it has been quite the experience.

C programming language hasn't been easy mehn... Especially since we got to data structures but having reached out to my friends and colleagues for help, they always provide time to explain to me. I'm seriously happy

Meanwhile, the August cohort groups are catching up pretty fast, I have a feeling that the number of dropouts will reduce!

I received a lot of heartfelt messages from the August cohorts yesterday, with gifts. Even though I didn't do much they dropped messages and gifts, it made me very happy. Not the gift but the fact that my post actually helped them.
