When those who stole billions are walking about on 'bail"

Is this not the case of using a sledgehammer to kill an ant.

I wanted to say the judgement is harsh let them appeal. But when I remember the criminals dislodged in Abuja town now causing havoc at night in Mararaba and Aso live in prisonment sentence is okay.

Nah, we do not have sentencing guidelines codified in a single document. We only have judicial precedents.

Besides, the judge was magnanimous enough not to have slammed them with a death sentence. The maximum punishment for armed robbery is a death penalty.

This crime doesn't require life imprisonment cus no life was lost and they didn't even use gun. Some years in the prison is better for correction and repentant. Thats my own thought. Pls don't come and attack me

You just spoke my mind. This is very heartbreaking. I feel like crying for them. That sentence was too harsh.

Good evening, Sir/Ma.

PLEASE HELP ME

I have been a member of this forum for 10 years. I see people ask for help here and I offer assistance in my own little way. I never knew I would one day be asking for help here like they did.

Please, someone should help me and my family with something to eat. No matter the amount, we don't mind and we will always appreciate it. Please, we are starving. I know things are very hard these days, but anything you have to spare, we would really appreciate it.

Lemme try and explain the law around armed robbery to you.
The penalty for robbery is 5-25years depending on its degree....but armed robbery is either life in jail or death depending on degree also.
Robbery is stealing without a deadly weapon....eg pick pocket, breaking and entering, bulgary, etc all these you get less than 10yrs in jail....but if during the commission of the robbery you injured someone, you get 10yrs+.....if you kill its 25yrs+ could even be life in jail.

But armed robbery is stealing with a weapon dat can kill. If you have anything dat can kill with you while stealing it becomes armed robbery....even if the weapon is a nail, blade, knife, axe, gun etc....for that you get life in jail no questions asked....if you happen to kill or injure anybody during the commission of the crime....you get death straight.

That's the law.

Offenses that can get you life imprisonment or death in Nigeria are the following;
Armed robbery (regardless of weapon used)
Treason (coup plotting)
Kidnapping
Terrorism
Etc

You're right in a way but let me ask you a question. Were laws not made based on thoughts and human reason? By default we humans aren't even perfect. The punishment is too harsh if you ask me. No life was even lost in the process. Don't get me wrong, they committed a terrible offence but does it warrant lifetime imprisonment? Definitely no.
That judgement needs to be appealed IMO.

Opinion is free, facts are sacred. Opinion and facts are products of human (although some are products of animal) reasoning but facts are more sacred than opinion is neither an authority nor binding. In as much as there is equality in principle before the law, it has never pride itself as faultless. While you continue to argue from the point of morality perhaps, because murder was not committed, legality (arguably characterized with imperfections) must prevail IMO.

Agreed but it doesn’t make so much sense. Each prisoner cost Tax payers around 1m a year. A first strike of armed robbery should not be life in prison.

Interpretation of the law does not need to "make so much sense". The law remains the law. I don't think its expensive to keep law breakers behind bars with about N3,000 on a daily basis. I am ever ready and willing to sell my testes and kidneys and remit proceeds from the sales to the Correction Service to keep law breakers behind bar. Have you being a victim of armed robbery or even petty thievery?

Two brothers cry a river after they were sentenced to life imprisonment for armed robbery in Lagos

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of an Ikeja Special Offences Court has sentenced a domestic worker, Genesis Ezebong, his brother, Micheal and one Ikade Moses, to life imprisonment for armed robbery in the Palm Groove area of Lagos State.

The convicts were arraigned on December 18, 2020 while the trial commenced on January 11, 2022. The prosecution counsel, Omowumi Bajulaye, during the arraignment of the convicts, had told the court that they committed the offence of conspiracy and armed robbery on January 13, 2019, at No 222 Ikorodu Road, Palm Groove, Lagos.

She said that the trio while armed with cutl@ss, shovel and other dangerous weapons, robbed one Daniel of one Compact Laptop, one Apple laptop, gold and costumes, jewelleries, Blackberry phones, one digital camera, soccer shoes and two other phones belonging to one Titilope Akeredolu. The prosecution, during trial, called three witnesses and tendered documents such as defendants’ statements which were admitted as exhibits.

The witnesses who had testified before the court included Inspector Okunade Olumuyiwa, Titilope Akeredolu and Investigative Police officer and Inspector Olawale Oni. They had narrated to the court how Akeredolu’s domestic worker conspired with others, who were armed with dangerous weapons, broke into his boss’s house with his gang after he had left to church, and locked the security man as well as other occupants in the toilet.

Akeredolu said after she went to church on Sunday morning, she received a call from her security man who told her that the first convict, Genesis Ezebong, her domestic staff, broke into her apartment with a cutlass and stole her things.

The judge held that the prosecution proved beyond a reasonable doubt, the circumstantial evidence against the defendants whils sentencing them.

Cutlass no be weapon abi?

No mind am... the poster doesnt know the meaning of aggravated robbery.. they were sentenced to life for that...three persons broke into a home with dangerous weapons, tied people up(am sure after many beatings)then proceeded to empty the house.. thats multiple counts of burglary, assault and aggravated assault. Whoever holds a weapon during a fight or robbery has the intention to use such when resisted..judges give verdicts based on the premeditated mindset of the offender, knowing they would surely commit murder if cornered..
(Just like discharging a weapon during a robbery with the intent to scare) the judge wont care if its a discharge in the air..

The interpretation of the law must make sense. Of lawmakers passed a law that allowed the government to take your land at will or employers to fire at will, does that make sense? Law breakers should be reformed. Putting them behind bars with no reform in mind just adds to the problem. By the time they are out, you have another worse crook on the street.
