The movie was hinting on how corrupt and how the system fails every now and then and even veterans ain't excluded . Despite their sacrifice, they are treated as sh.it. Hence, he wanted the whole world to know what veterans were going through and how corrupt the whole system was.

We also see few instances of racial hatred in the movie. If he were white, he wouldn't have been killed, he would have just been whisked away.
