Panic as petrol queues surface in Abuja

October 05, 2022. 14:44

Queues for petrol have surfaced in Abuja as bad road networks on the Abuja-Lokoja expressway disrupted the supply of products to the northern part of the country.

TheCable witnessed long queues on Wednesday at fuel stations along Lugbe, central business district (CBD) and airport road.

An industry source who prefers anonymity said bad road networks caused the scarcity as tankers take longer hours to deliver fuel at stations.

Some trucks got stuck because of the road situation, and the other trucks carrying products could not pass,” the source said.

Another source told TheCable that the traffic on the Abuja-Lokoja road caused scarcity, and “Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) had to use the Calabar road to supply northern states.

Speaking with Daily Sun, Abubakar Maigandi vice-president of Independent Petroleum Marketers of Nigeria (IPMAN), blamed the queues on the scarcity of petrol at depots owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

He said the development forced private depot owners to jack up the price from N148 per litre to between N170 and 175 per litre.

Maigandi also attributed the situation to bad roads, saying it was one of the factors discouraging oil marketers from loading products at Lagos depots.

He said it takes several days to transport the commodity to Abuja and the northern parts of the country.

The increase in depot price of petrol by private depot owners was noticed last week. We didn’t get at NNPC depots, and the private ones said the product is scarce,” he said.

TheCable has reached out to Garba Deen Muhammad, spokesperson, Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, for comment.

Thousands stranded on Niger Bridge as flood takes over Kogi-Abuja road

Published on October 4, 2022
By Seun Opejobi

Commuters and travelers in their thousands have been held at a standstill along the Abuja-Lokoja road in Kogi State.

DAILY POST reports that travelers in their numbers were held in the gridlock, which started immediately after Lokoja, stretching to a nearby town of Koton Karifi, after the Niger bridge.

Our correspondent reports that commuters have been held in the gridlock from 3 pm on Monday, and as of the time of filing this report, the road has not been cleared.

The gridlock started from the Lokoja axis of the Niger Bridge to the other end of the Bridge.

The gridlock made some travelers to abandon their vehicles.

Our correspondent, who was also held in the gridlock, observed that the situation was caused by flooding and a damaged articulated vehicle in Koton Karifi, a town after the Niger Bridge.

Commercial motorcycles trying to make brisk business charged commuters between N2,000 to N4,000 to ferry them across the Bridge.

Speaking with DAILY POST, a road user identified as Segun Odunlami, lamented the situation.

Odunlami said he has been in the gridlock since 4pm yesterday.

Traveling from Lagos to Abuja, the aggrieved commuter said: “We were told flood covered the road in Koton Karifi, which is after the Niger Bridge.

“The flood is responsible for the gridlock because vehicles are restricted to one lane; this is unbearable. I have never had this experience before in my life; we are just stuck here.”

Another commuter traveling from Akure to Abuja, added that the gridlock was further caused by an articulated vehicle that broke down in Koton Karifi due to the flood on the road.

“I’m traveling from Akure to Abuja and I have been here since 3pm yesterday. I met the traffic jam immediately after Lokoja, and we got to know that it was caused by flood that took over the road in Koton Karifi, after the Niger Bridge,” the commuter who wished to be anonymous said.

DAILY POST reports that communities around the Niger Bridge are prone to perennial flooding.

Very soon, even those with lavish houses will run out of them and seek shelter in poor zones. Money will not be the definite factor. Those fighting for lands that they will die and leave will soon look out and see their properties buried in a flood.

hard times are coming. the Bible predicted it. Very hard times difficult to deal with will be here.

I blame the government

By now Abuja should have had far more alternative routes in and out other than the two main ones . Also, railways

Also, if NNPC pipelines were working plus the Kaduna refinery was working, supplies should be coming in fron Kaduna.

Again i blame the government. If they had removed subsides since, we would have had a working refinery

Well, if apc had done what needed to be done in the petroleum sector, by now abuja would have been getting fuel supplies from the Kaduna refinery which would have been fed by the pipelines

Plus apc should have gotten the ministry of works to develop alternative routes into abuja. As it is, our major connection to the ports ia through Lokoja. That's not sufficient
