My Mother Wants Me To Rent My Own House by Greattestman: 8:57am On Nov 18, 2022
This issue has been eating me up for so long and i don't know what to do. My mother began pressurizing me to rent my own house and leave her alone.

It was unprecedented and i don't expect that from her. I'm barely 20 and I teach in a private school. I also do home lessons so my monthly income ranges from 25k to 30k or thereabout.

This money will not be enough for me to rent a house, buy my food and take care of myself. I have tried to explain but she refused to understand with me. She told her friends to advice me to leave; that I'm matured enough to live alone.

I'm pressed and I need your advice.

In some countries with high standard of living, you would be married with a child.
Move out and stop staying with your mother.

Maybe you are not helping your mum. With your salary you can rent a house depending on where you live. It is even good to be independent.

Start from somewhere, that's how some of us started our adulthood.

She is right and it is time you left.
The fear of uncertainty is what you are scared of but to me it is a blessing in disguise. So leave and pay her a visit once in a while

Fear of uncertainty is just part of it, but my problem is that in Jalingo where I live, houses are expensive. I just need time.

If you are treating your mother well doing chores around the house, supporting her in paying bills, she wouldn't be so eager for you to leave at 20 so start telling the truth.

What you need to do is to challenge yourself and cultivate the habit of saving and prudent spending...
She was trying to teach you something that u might not understand at the moment but it will become clearer to you as you advance in age...

The people here are wicked, which kind of mother do u have? That's very unthoughtful of her considering how harsh the economy is and who the hell pushes a 20year old out of the house?

I do not mean to quote you..I just have to clarify something...The age an individual is considered a young adult is 18yrs in Nigeria...which means he/ she is no longer considered as minor..

And these are the thing that an 18yrs can do;
<<Get a credit card
<<Sue someone
<<Get a job
<<Buy stock
<<Buy or rent a house without his/her parent consent
<<Buy a car
<<Get married
<<Be tried as an adult for a crime..

The fact that many families were not asking their children to leave the house @ that age in the country due to some circumstances best known to them does not mean that it's a total taboo for those families that decides to do it..

She should give you one more year to plan it

U need to build some savings and expand your income to venture into it otherwise you will suffer unnecessarily.

This may sound harsh bro, but find way to move out and be on your own, until you leave your comfort zone life really hasn’t began for most people, when you move out you will be mo motivated to work more smarter and harder to sustain your self, you will thirsty and hungry, but for better you

Think about this, look for a way to move out even if na for friend place

Bros, things have changed.

I will not even advise anyone on less than 100k to stay alone if their parents are still ready to have them.

The Nigeria of 5 years ago is 4 times better than what we have now.

That boy is going to suffer. Even if he is prudent, 30k will not take him half of the month.

Finance aside, 20 is still small, he still needs the motherly care. They are called young adults for a reason.

I understand my brother... but people share apartments... split bills everyday... I'm glad that Nigeria is not like abroad where both the rich and the poor buys at the same grocery store...

As for motherly care, my brother, As I old like this, If I tell u say I no need motherly care(not wifely care)I dey lie smiley

What kind of mother is that pushing you out of her house at age 20? Even mature adults are finding things hard in this present naija, not to talk of kids your age, except you are stubborn or not contributing for upkeep, I suggest you go to a relative close by for your peace of mind.

Modified:
I keep saying it that most nl peeps didn't come from a healthy family background, they always see their upbringing as the basis and right, see how most of them are supporting the mother, this is not the western world for goodness sake, their standard of living and way of life is not same as ours, Op's mother is suppose to look for how to secure admission to a University for him at that age 20, that is what concerned and caring parents would do

Op where is your dad?
