What kind of name is that? Ngozi Fulani? Background checks have to be done to make sure she
isn't a dodgy woman.

I don't see anything wrong in the questions. All I see is someone who is not proud to say where she is from when asked. If I see a white person claiming Nigeria, I will also like to know their original country. Black people and playing victim, what a disgrace.

From a Nigerian perspective, it may appear to be an innocent question, but it is not. The fact that she said "we got there in the end", shows she has no respect for the person she is talking too, she feel privilege and thought she could intimidate. Ngozi was not having any of it. I have seen such behaviour before.

Years ago when I use to work in the shop, a lady came in to the shop , the girl attending to her was British of Caribbean origin. She wanted an extra carrier bag but instead of her to ask politely, she said something like give me another bag, talking like if she was talking to one of her servants. The shop attendance said Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! The lady said oh I have never been humiliated like this before in my life.

Ngozi Fulani is most likely British of Caribbean origin or American.

Sometimes you have to bring them down a peg or two and remind them that the slave trade is over!

The Royal family is a racist institution. This is not surprising.

But I don't fully understand the intent of the woman for asking such questions, so I can't conclude. Could it be racism or just a question out of curiosity (based on the name). Only lady SH can tell.

It is racism but immigrants wouldn't understand it. undecided

likewise, a white person born in Nigeria, who has a Nigerian accent, and carries a Nigerian passport also isn't a Nigerian

The late Queen's lady-in-waiting Lady Susan Hussey has apologised and resigned after she repeatedly asked a black British charity boss where she was "really" from.

Ngozi Fulani, a charity founder, was questioned about her background at the charity event at the palace on Tuesday.

Ms Fulani, said she was "totally stunned" by Prince William's godmother's comments.

The palace described the remarks as "unacceptable and deeply regrettable".

A spokesperson for Prince William said "racism has no place in our society".

"The comments were unacceptable, and it is right that the individual has stepped aside with immediate effect," they said.

Lady Hussey, 83, was a close confidante of the late Queen and accompanied her at the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh last year.

'In shock'
Ms Fulani, in an interview with the Independent website, said the issue was "bigger than one individual. It's institutional racism".

"I was in shock after it happened and anybody who knows me knows I don't take this kind of nonsense," she said.

"But I had to consider so many things. As a black person, I found myself in this place where I wanted to say something but what happened would automatically be seen as my fault, it would bring [my charity] Sistah Space down.

"It would be 'oh, she has a chip on their shoulder'."

Ms Fulani said she did not want to see Lady Hussey "vilified".

An eyewitness to the conversation, Mandu Reid, told BBC News that Lady Hussey's questions had been "offensive, racist and unwelcoming".

The leader of the Women's Equality Party said she had felt a "sense of incredulity" about the exchange in which Ms Fulani was interrogated about where she was from, even though she had already explained she was born and lived in the UK.

Oh, I get it... based on the 3

African names.

Till today, Trinidadians and Guyanese still bear mainly West African names.

A Guyanese-American woman

This unnecessary attention seeking.
I dont why people are losing resilience and strength. All this feeling and woke behaviour

When i went to the UK I was a tiny little 15 year old. I remember old ladies use to cross the road, getting served last at corner shops, being chased by NF West Ham supporters, my white girlfriend being tsk and tutted at. At 20 being asked by a policeman while parked " where are your tools?" ( implying I was a burglar) I never wrote this home in any of my letters, I simply got on with it. Previous generations had it worse.

In all these things I responded with a smile and simply got on with it.

It is true that some people are really disengaged from reality over there. Some are simply ignorant. Even in polite conversation they "put their foot in it" but you dont need to become them to answer them.

You wouldn't understand this because you are or were an immigrant. undecided

being born British and being British are 2 different things

What happens if the British union breaks up, where would a person born in England claim since there is no Britain anymore?

Okonandmary:

She is black and her parents are immigrants, so she has a country and will support her parent country no matter what,

You assumed her parents are immigrants. If she says she is British who are you to say she is not?

Okonandmary:

Do you think Jamaicans and Africans are more English than English people themselves? when Jamaicans and England are playing football? who do you think the Jamaicans support?

Who they support is a matter of choice, just as you can choose not to be English/British, it's your choice.

Okonandmary:

being English means, you are white and have a deep, ancestral connection and ties with England, it is just like being igbo, yoruba or hausa,

Not necessary. If the late queen of England who is white had "deep, ancestral connection and ties with" Germany claims to be English wouldn't she be right?

Okonandmary:

a white man born in Nigeria and who speaks Igbo isn't an Igbo man, he is still a white man and will still have a connection with his land and will like to visit there often to know more about his people.

If the laws of the U.K. say that if you are born in England makes you English who are you to equate that with the laws in Nigeria? undecided

I cant argue this but I have had an experience with a fellow Nigerian who became citizen after 4yrs in Canada. In that case, we both weren't born here but he felt offended being asked the question.

I definitely can't speak for the person. Provided you didn't persistent after they've given thier first answer or indicated they don't want to answer, I don't see any reason they should be upset. Perhaps they were still too excited about thier citizenship to the point where a simple question becomes a threat to thier passport grin

My friend, Italians in England are proud to identify with their Italian roots. Same goes for every other nationality in the US .

You will see Greek Americans celebrating their heritage and culture.

German Americans hold their annual Oktober Fest in the US.

The Irish will be ever so proud to let you know his Irish and give you a taste of Irish hot temper .

There is China Town in the US with Chinese cuisines , martial art studios and whatnot.

A Jamaican will let you know his Jamaican .

A Latina will never shut up and will speak to you in Spanish first .

Mexicans wave their flags everywhere they are found on US soil.

So don't come here and tell us there is no ethnicity pride among those born in the US . Even to the nth generation, they will still be proud to claim their roots.

It is a choice to take pride in your ethnicity, it's not by force.

I am not sure that this is true.

It is only in the UK that people refer to themselves as British and get offended when people ask where they originally come from. In America, the Irish, Italians, etc., will tell you about their ancestral roots even before you ask them. The reasons for the sensitivities are unclear to me since the English are the most mongrel race in the world - even the royal family is English, German, Austrian and Greek!

My response would have been to tell of my ancestry and be proud of it. I doubt an Indian would have responded this way. Indians have very low acculturation - they take the opportunities but keep their traditions.

In my opinion, there is a lot of emotional fragility creeping into the UK. Most of the emergency cases are self-harm cases which is very, very different from just 10 years ago. Something is going on there for sure.

My tuppence worth.

And no, I am not an immigrant I returned to Nigeria after working in the city as a lawyer for a few years, and now its just holidays smiley

the highlighted is not true, this was an attempt by anti racist group to revise history

We became part of the British empire in 1901

Our first interaction with British people was during slavery when some of our people were trading their fellow black people with the British, Spanish, pourtugese and others

Which part is not true?

In your original post, you said:

"A black person doesn't have any traditional or historical connection with Britain"

I have pointed out that indeed black people have long history of connection with Britain as far back as 2000 years ago when an African (Quietus Lollius Urbicus )governed Britain during the Roman Empire and more recently, the interactions of the British Empire with Africa in the last 3 centuries.
