The results don't match your search criteria. If car is newly purchased, you want to confirm the previous oil used from the seller and if you can't get that info, be careful which oil you stick to cos 37k for gallon of oil no be yam over time.

the car is newly purchased as tokunbo, no idea of the previous oil used

Use manufacturer's specified oil.
Check the oil filler hole and inspect if it has sludge. If the car has sludge then you should stick to mineral oil.

the manufacturer oil is any SAE standard synthetic oil with 5w-30 weight.

Which is mineral oil?

No long story oga, call gazzuzz & he will supply the right oil for your car because there are other questions to be asked, as you couldn't find the service history at the top left of the wind shield or anywhere around the car.
Though, like jceesquare said you can open the oil cap to check for sludge

How long have you been using the 20W50?
Did you just get the car?
If yes was the previous owner using 20W50?
If you've been using the car for a while and have always serviced with 5W30, you can always switch back.
But if the service history has always been 20W50, I'll advise you stick to it.

Hi bro, I recently got my car too. The previous owner has been servicing the car with 20W50. The manufacturers specified oil is SAE 5W-30, so I'm planning to change the oil to Mobil Super 2000 5W-30 semi-synthetic motor oil.

What do you think?

GAZZUZZ:
This thread is dedicated to solving car related problems, it will cover all issues feel free to post problems here, Car gurus your posts are welcome and highly appreciated.

Hi Gazzuzz,
I'm referred to you by one of your customers here on Nairaland. Here is my issue:

I purchased a 2005 V6 3.3L Highlander about three weeks ago. I stay around Mowe, Ogun State. My car recently become unstable in motion, it swerves and sometimes it feels like the steering is not total control of the wheels. This could happen regardless of the speed, road condition or driving condition. It could happen when the brakes are applied, or when driving on uneven road. Kindly note that prior to this development, the car has a bad rear absorbers and a weak steering pump which I was planning to replace.

Secondly, I would like a recommendation for a trustworthy and reliable professional who can help diagnose and fix the error-lights on the car's dashboard. Please see screenshot 1 below.

Thirdly, I started noticing that the ABS module is leaking, and the brake fluid is going down. Please see screenshot 2 below.

Fourthly, I also noticed some black oil stains around the timing belt cover. Please see screenshot 3 below.

Please help me with your phone number and workshop address. Thank you

1st, that thing called semi synthetic is a scam. It's either you're using a synthetic oil or a mineral oil. Synthetic blend is another over rated mineral oil with a little bitty touch of synthetic addictive to make more money off customers.

Switching over to the factory spec is usually not easy for an abused engine. This is my recommendation.

1. Buy the 5W30 oil (mineral oil) and closely monitor your oil dipstick daily for oil level. If it stays full till the next service, then you're fine.
If it drops then move to the next step.

2. If you noticed slight drop, you can switch to 10W40 and also closely monitor oil level. 10W40 will help lubricate your engine during cold start and also offer some reasonable amount of protection when hot. If your oil level still drops then move to the next stage.

3. Buy your regular 20W50 and use jeje. But if that one still gets burnt, move to the next suggestion.

4. Rebuild your engine, or replace engine.

Note: 1. Always inspect for oil leaks. Leaks no matter how small will over time cause you to have low oil level in the car.

2. Do not be tempted to jump to a synthetic oil as you do not know the condition of the engine. Synthetic oils with all the benefits it offers will kill your engine if it has sludge in it. Mind you, you just got the car and don't know the full service history.

3. Just because your car burns oil don't mean it's bad. Your PCV valve might just be the culprit. Have that checked before switching oils.

4. Ask a friend to drive behind you in different drive mode and observe the colour of the fume (if any) coming out of your tail pipe. This will help determine if your car burns oil or not (at least to am extent)

He wants to scam you. Run!!!
The proper thing to do is scan the car then fix based on the codes he get.
This is what most street mechanic does.
They either tape off the lights, or wire the check engine light to the ignition and it goes off when the car starts. With that, you would be working blindly and end up messing your car.

Don't use that mechanic again even for change of oil.

Lol. You don go enter one chance mechanic hand. By the way, don't ever allow a mechanic to go alone with your car for whatever test. Go with them.

Meanwhile, when you get signs showing on your dashboard, it simply means there's a likelihood of a physical problem with the car, especially when the sign stays for sometime without dissappearing. The best thing is to scan and know the problem so you can deal with it. Don't try to just clear it when you've not solve the underlying problem.

Stop throwing parts at the car.
When replacing the fuel pump, did you replace the entire unit or just the pump itself. Also how much did you buy the pump?
You're having fuel delivery issues as your fuel line does not hold enough pressure to start the car.
Ask your mechanic to check the fuel line if it has fuel pressure in it. If not change your fuel pressure regulator. Also run a fuel pressure test on the pump and change the complete unit with an original one if it has low pressure.

You're right.
Had this issue with my 2010 Qashqai
What i did, before fixing it, was to turn on the ignition (without cranking it. Leave it in for 10secs so the fuel supplies to the line.
Once i do that, it starts on first try

Thanks so much for your detailed reply. I think I will just stick with the 20W50 oil. I don't want to take chances.

1.If it's not broken, don't try to fix it
2.let a professional help you check the oil by opening the drain hole to get a tiny amount of the oil to see the color
