Hello nairalanders,
It’s with great pleasure that I start this thread about purchasing my first car.
Mid last year, I determined I was going to buy a car and started saving rigorously to try get one…trust me it has been a grand journey …suddenly there was no more henessy, Martel kept staring every night out but I was always like ‘baba chill,I Dey save’… I don’t earn much but I am so tired of jumping buses and Okada and most painfully paying big money to e-hailing………………

First I started with daily 5k …my projection was by mid this year I could get a Benz, but omo saving money is extra HARD in Naija.
Lorokan sha (in one word), I have saved up 1.8 million so far and I THINK i will like to get a car now
Yes, it’s not much to get my dream car but I feel it’s definitely ok to get started ..I am flexible with my plan…keep upgrading my cars when I get the chance and before I know it, I may get my BENZ…it’s hard I know but I can do it and I am sure of it……

You can save up more and buy a clean 2006 Camry or 2008 Accord or 2010 Accord (the latter is a better option in Honda)

Use due diligence before paying. Make sure you go with a mechanic (who has a scan tool) and pay the mechanic for his time whether he advise you to buy the car or not.

Check underneath the car for rust.

Both cars of your choice are fine, but ensure that you do thorough checks before you buy any of them. Check the engine and gear. For the gear, please remove the gear oil gauge, smell the oil if it's not smelling burnt, and if it does, please avoid such cars. If the gear oil also looks too brownish or black, that's a sign of badly maintained gear, and it's not advisable for purchase to avoid spending heavily on repair.

If the rpm moves to 4k - 5k before it return to rest n pick up, it's sign of weak transmission, it supposed to return to rest & pick up before or at exactly 3k.

Each time it returns, it means the vehicle has moved from one gear to the next

Ensure that your technician scans the vehicle and certifies everything is fine; let him be your trusted technician

Above, if your entire money na 1.8m presently I advised you have 200k extra cash before you buy that 1.8m car boss. To buy car no hard, maintenance na the koko

1.8m won’t even get you a good Nigerian used. My advice, keep saving, to avoid getting one that you will regret.

In Nigeria of today, N1.8 million can only get you a Naija used car that will make you know all the mechanics in your area. You will lose your sleep, peace of mind and appetite. All your salary will continue to go into repairs of the vehicle.

Naija is a messed up country else I would have asked you to invest the money somewhere for now, but which investment is viable in Nigeria of today?

Motor no be wetin person dey save 5k per month to buy. In Nigeria of today, for you to buy a vehicle that will make sense, you need nothing less than N4m for sedan and N6m for SUV.

Sorry if my post breaks your heart but that is just the reality.

All the best.
