Temu Spends $1.3 Billion On Ads, Now The Most Downloaded App In Nigeria by nlfpmod(mod): 9:04am On Dec 02, 2024
Chinese eCommerce company Temu is now the most popular app in Nigeria's Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The app is now the most downloaded in recent days garnering over 500 million downloads on the Andriod store.

According to Similar Web, OPay is currently the second most popular app in Nigeria, Crypto Mayors is third, while WhatsApp is third. On the Apple App Store, Temu retains its number one position while second place went to a social networking app called Bammby, and OPay is third.

Temu's rapid rise in popularity in these stores comes as no surprise as many Nigerians have been inundated with ads from Chinese eCommerce platform.

The company reportedly spent $1.3 billion on Meta ads. Its ad spend jumped 1,000% year-over-year for the period from January to November 2023. Within this period, 76% of Temu's ad spend went to social media, while 13% went to other forms of ads.

The company has also gotten numerous ad spots on Super Bowl which cost $7 million for a 30-second ad. It did this two years in a row giving away $15 million in coupons in the process.

Launched in 2022, Temu is owned by PDD Holdings, the parent company of the Chinese eCommerce giant, Pinduoduo. PDD Holdings, founded by former Google employee Colin Huang, built its reputation on offering low-cost products shipped directly from suppliers.

Temu's appeal is its low-priced products, which gives it a competitive advantage in most markets, but especially in Nigeria where inflation and a generally worsening economy have eroded people's purchasing power.

Per this Techpoint Africa article, Nigeria is a key African market for Temu as it has one of the highest populations of tech-savvy youth thanks to affordable Chinese smartphones.

Also, Nigeria's eCommerce market which was valued at $12 billion in 2019, is projected to reach $75 billion by 2025. Furthermore, digital payment systems, which have seen increased adoption, are facilitating this growth by making online transactions more secure and accessible.

Temu's aggressive charge has allowed it to enter 80 markets in a short period. Its entrance into the Nigerian market means stiff competition for players like Jumia, who is already dialling back marketing spend to increase its profit margin. But while a Temu victory might seem assured in Nigeria, the company's quality of service is something that has come into question a number of times.

Their ads are everywhere! It's because of them, fairmoney and Opay that I turn off my mobile data when playing games. Them fit suffocate person with ads especially those bland opay/okash "models". People from other countries using Temu say na fake and substandard products full there.

Honestly, i feel like jumia is not a serious company. Jumia has what is takes to dominate the African e-commerce market but it seems their management just aren't ambitious.

App has a backdoor which they use to access confidential information you have stored in your phones.

If they can do this to the US with better customer protection laws than all of Africa combined, then we're going to get crazily exploited like never before.

Jumia can't compete cos they sell imported products that are made in Temu's backyard.

They have to add their own middleman costs to the price. These online marketplaces are all competing on price and even giants like Amazon go still hear am too

$1.3 billion dollars in Nigeria or overall ad spend worldwide?

I understand this post is also an Ad. Another set of people would go download temu and try to see what it's about.

As we're also writing about temu and thinking about it, our phones are reading our mind and taking data from our keyboard and what we write, then they'll serve us temu ads.

So what do you propose they use?
Cash?

The CBN already did the needful, I have been using my Naira card to buy on many international online market places with no issue for about a month now.

You can even check out on Aliexpress using your Opay account (Yes i say account not card) but of course, your Opay card (which is even a Verve card) works too.

I already compete a transaction on Temu and their prices are stated in Naira and again I use my Opay Verve card to check out.

You can try your bank card on any platform to confirm.

Very aggressive marketing! I was "forced" to download, couldn't resist.

But, please we need to do proper journalism and research. There's nothing in and about this report that confirms Temu has the most downloaded app in Nigeria.

So Temu works in Nigeria?
Re: Temu Spends $1.3 Billion On Ads, Now The Most Downloaded App In Nigeria by trium:
They are also in U.S. and Canada but those countries are worried about privacy and security of their people because letting Temu do delivery is like letting China know about their people. You give temu your address, your number and everything. It's not just online buying. China is determined to conquer the world.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WDaWtR65K8

America can also not lose production and distribution to China. They can be okay buying from China or producing there but allowing them to take market share will kill Amazon. this is why they banned TikTok. Trump is likely to take a tougher stance because he wants manufacturing to come back to the U.S. Temu can also kill local apps like Konga, Jumia because Chinese govts support businesses as part of their dominance in the world.

Poverty will make Temu attractive but there is a great opportunity for SON and Consumer Protection with this site.

Trade protection is the next big fight this coming years. Everyone will try to protect their own except the slaves who like everything their master gives them and clap for them. You can't rescue those ones.

Before you buy anything on that Temu.. take your time: read reviews, take note of the measurement of what you want to buy, drawers, wardrobes, shoe racks, boxes etc before they send one minuscule thing to you..

Read the description and measurement of items carefully.
