Vance praises Trump’s focus on religious freedom, cites Nigerian priests’ plight

United States Vice President JD Vance addressed the 2025 National Catholic Prayer Breakfast on Friday, focusing on the plight of Christians facing persecution, particularly in Nigeria.

Vance, in his speech, shared the story of Nigerian priests who continue to protect their congregations despite facing severe challenges.

Vance used the example to emphasise the Donald Trump administration’s commitment to defending religious freedom worldwide.

“”One of the most important parts of President Trump’s policy, and where I think President Trump’s policy is most in accord with Christian social teaching and with the Catholic faith, is that more than any president of my lifetime, President Trump has pursued a path of peace.

“And we very often, I think, ignore the way in which our foreign policy is either an instrument or an impediment to people all over the world being able to practice their faith.

“And we know — and as, of course, I learned in this breakfast last year — I believe there were some Nigerian priests who were being persecuted and were trying to protect their flock despite incredible persecution,” he narrated.

He praised the Trump administration for prioritising the protection of religious liberty, both domestically and internationally, with a specific focus on vulnerable communities such as those in Nigeria.

In his remarks, Vance framed the administration’s policies as central to ensuring that religious rights are safeguarded around the world.

He assured the audience that the Trump administration would continue its efforts to support persecuted religious groups, especially in regions where Christians face violence and oppression.

“We know that some of the biggest groups that are persecuted all over the world today are Christians, and the Trump administration promises you that whether it’s here at home with our own citizens or all over the world, we will be the biggest defenders of religious liberty and the rights of conscience.

“And I think those policies will fall to the benefit of Catholics in particular all over the world,” the VP noted.

Back to the discussion. While I won't deny there's persecution of Christians in Nigeria, I won't term it as 'incredible' persecution.

When most so called men of God will lie and embellish the truth for International funding and 'japa', this is what the end result is. An exaggeration of actual facts.

Trump by the way also has his own agenda, I can only hope Nigerians, or at least most of us are smart enough to see through their schemes.

Every religion suffers some form of persection in Nigeria depending on the part of the country they find themselves. Unfortunately, leaders of other religions are not dubious enough to lie for funding and to seek asylum. These lies are where other countries get their statistics from which does not reflect the real situation on ground.

However, if USA that tried to help your poor Islamic children through aids without asking about your religion identity despite being christian nation is your sponsored, then you should love America more for funding your Islamic terrorism for you just like you will praise someone that fund your hajj to mecca. Of all the problems Nigeria has and the U.S can help Nigeria with. It is fighting religious rancour.. a problem whose solution is hard to measure, or u hear human rights violation... How do u solve these problem without paying lip service and sounding almighty...
