Music Question. Will Be Deleted In 12 Hours. by meobizy(op):
Let me see how smart Nairaland is. I have a friend in the industry who I’ll ask the same question. If he answers before I see something satisfactory here, I will delete the thread and continue with life. If I see a satisfactory response here, I will post it and my friend’s response as additions to the original thread before deleting the title and moving on.

Let’s go.

Why do Nigerian artistes prefer to release EPs (4 track albums) or singles (1 - 3 versions of the same song) over a standard 10 - 16 song album? I’ve noticed this despite the song-making process being more forgiving these days than in the past. Songs today are 02:30 minutes as opposed to the standard 03:30 minutes of the 90s. Some songs are mostly a catchy hook and nothing else.

We still have smart people on Nairaland. This is the closest to what my friend said.

Laird:
1) The cost of making and producing a song is expensive

From studio time, to beat making, to engineers and producers and sometimes, instrumentalists

2) The cost of music promotion is very high from music vodeos to photos to adverts to radio and tv and internet promotion, airplay , interviews, mentions and articles, playlisting, front page placement on mefia and internet platforms

3) It is assumed that most people now have shorter attention listening spans due to mass access and oversupply of music and movie and news content on the internet so shorter music projects appear easier to listen to

R) Shorter music projects cost less money to produce and promote and market .
Thank you for giving me hope regarding Nairaland. Nowadays, I ask ChatGPT my questions and keep it moving.

Cost was the reason he gave. He said making songs was easy, but creating singles is the smart choice. Rather than release an album which’ll be forgotten in a month, release a single which may face the same. If it makes a name, milk it for a year or two before focusing on other projects. You can ride the buzz of a single to release a body of work. No need to take such risk. Release other singles like a parent during war times. Some may get lost in time. One may hit and become your mean to make a name. At the end of the day, you’ll make the same money off a single which a proper album will bring and still possess creativity to release more as opposed to blowing your load on an album. Keep the fans hoping for more while you drain their wallets. Streaming gave them short attention spans.
