Offpoint1:Rugby has not been popular in Nigeria. Even cricket is more popular in NIgeria than rugby. The field might even be an appropriated football field. |

Zocalite:Some secondary schools, even in the stadium. I personally know one of the coaches promoting the sport then. |

Haydens:Ah, most rugby players wear nothing to protect their heads. They even sort of take it as a thing of pride (that's why we better than those American footballers). Below is a picture from a match between two of the world's top rugby clubs...Munster and Leinster from Eire. Note the lack of head protection (at best they wear mouth gards like the boxers do.) Second photo is from another two of the world's top rugby clubs...the Sharks and the Bulls (from South Africa). Again note the lack of head gear. Guy in green is the ref.

Haydens:Where do you see rugby players wearing protection over the head. You must think Rugby is same as American Football. |

10thTenthMan:Understood! The Oyinbo man also copied the Haka from somewhere. It would be nice seeing a culturally creative and adaptive African Haka. Better still if we can export it to other nations. Shalom |

ntyce:And the head protection in American football does not 'work'..they may even have more damage compared to rugby players. |

10thTenthMan:Exactly what I thought. The haka is a tradition with meaning and sacred to Maoris. Must Nigerians copy it? |

Abloh:Rugby is a great sport. Teaches strength, endurance and strategizing. The reason why it is not popular was largely because it never professionalized until some 35 years ago. Meanwhile football got professional over 120 years ago...so a young man wanting to do sport and earn money would choose association football over rugby. |

nairalanda1:football over useless rugby |
| Re: Pictures As Tunde Delu Hosts Rugby Competition In Abeokuta by nairalanda1(m): 9:43am On Apr 14, 2025 |
Abloh:Well to each his own..(I like football and basketball and athletics before Rugby, but rugby is still a good sport. NO sport is useless. Not even Eton fives which used to be popular over here...it was the late Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Bello's main sport..he played it to relax with others...or squash, which is a fripping good sport..Obasanjo's main relaxation thing...yet is not an Olympic sport for some reason). |

nairalanda1:Okay,well explained . But what's the difference between rugby 🏉 and American football?🏈 |
| Re: Pictures As Tunde Delu Hosts Rugby Competition In Abeokuta by nairalanda1(m): 10:00am On Apr 14, 2025 |
Haydens:Well, let's start by defining football as a game where a ball is kicked between two teams of any number x of people. The complicated thing is that it has a lot of variants/ types. There is no one type of football, there are several types, each of which have rules and regulations. LIke rugby football is football played by rugby rules and Association footbal is played by Association football rules...(which were actualy a combination of two rule systems...). In America, rugby was intially the game, but then some Americans started adding their rules ...and the result was American (aka Girdiron) football (that's the short and dirty history, the acutal history is a bit more complex) American football even has a variant called Canadian football (some of the rules are different, and the length of the pitch is different, but if you can play American footbal, you can play canadian football). There is even Australian rules football self. |

nairalanda1:Impressive. So, every ball sports has its rules and the rules varies from country to country. |

TenQ:From my Rugby Watching Experience when I recall the countries that perform the Haka, only NEWZEALAND comes to mind. The whites join them in performing it if they are Citizens there or have strong ties to the country. There is no other country that performs the Haka. Another country that has a traditional war dance they perform is Fiji. They perform their Cibi and whenever they face New Zealand it is usually an interesting display. There is also the Samoan Siva Tau, Tongan Sipi Tau, Fiji iBOLE, and the Cook Islands war dance. When it is time and the game is ripe, we would and should remember to bring out our Ogene; our Ohiafia Ikpirikpi Ogu War Dance; or Egungu; etc etc. 😀😀😀 |
