well,
I work on a FPSO in Gulf of Guinea. I am in operations. Ironically, I got the job through an advert I responded to here on Nairaland. Its been three years now flying "chopper" and I have never had any regret whatsoever. The environment is challenging and interesting. Sights of sharks and Dolphins is normal then migratory birds also visit once its their time to migrate. Weather is a low side of offshore particularly when you have dressed up ready to go home after staying away from home for 14days only to be told chopper wont come because of bad weather and you will have to put on your coverall again back to work. Its fun and interesting. Food is also another negative side. You have to wakeup and eat as early as 6:30am. If you are not use to eating early then there will be a problem. In all, no regret working offshore!

it depends on the type of platform. i guess his is FPSO - it feels the wave most. That is why weight measurements are not always done in FPSO. mine is a piled platform. The turbulent sea waves gives ours a nudge and we do feel it a little not like the FPSo which dances like a raft floating on the denser sima. But it is a very soothing sensation, especially when u wanna sleep at nignt. OMG! u feel like a baby being rocked in a cot.

Plz u guyz should help us dat seek to work offshore,my only issue is swimming test, but heard its nt always neccessary sum companies jst give u a swim pass even if u don't knw hw to swim, moreover de truth is if u get into dat water its only baba God dat can save u,cuz dey say u cnt even swim de water,..life jackets nd safety equipments r provided. Courses like BOSIET,HEUT etc r a big hindrance for us dat can't afford it,tho I hear companies usually foot de bills for the training.
Am a graduate of mechanical engineering nd hav a certificate in electro-mechanical which covers de basics of HVAC,piping system, pumps, compressors, actuators, valves, diesel engine maintenance,H.S.E ...nd so on. You sound like have been on ABO FPSO.. Anyway, you forgot to add that there are emergency drills performed on a routine basis (fire, toxic gases, Pirates, man-over board, etc). Also, people (especially first times) tend to develop sea sickness (nausea and vomiting).unfortunately for me, my shift made me miss, Xmas, new year, Easter, anniversaries last year.. But in all, when u see your pay slip, you somehow forget the pains...lol.,. Am a subsea engineer

Usually, your would company pays for your BOSIET and HUET. It is mandatory and believe me DPR officials are seriously ensuring that u have these before going offshore. These training are not to teach you to swim during a mishap, but rather they will only teach you how to survive in water until search-and-rescue team arrives.. You can't swim across the ocean, don't even try.. The first survival lesson is "Conserve your energy to enable you stay alive for a longer time"

Now, the kind of facility you find yourself will tell how bad you feel the effect of the ocean tides. Most FPSOs (if not all) are anchored (fixed) to the sea bed with chains. Because of this restriction, they feel the ocean tides to an extent. But most modern offshore drilling rigs are DPs (dynamically positioned) and are usually heave (tide) compensated. This flexibility (unlike the anchored/fixed FPSOs) reduces the tidal effect. The supply vessels are the worst, not anchored, not dynamically positioned (although few modern ones are DP); hence any where water move, dem go move too.. That's why a lot of people develop sea sickness on these supply vessels..

Did BOSIET in 2012, sponsored though. But at this moment, its gathering dust at home. Any help in this regard would not be bad smiley

The major things I miss offshore are the beautiful nurses grin and the drills.

This thread is not a job search zone. I did my 2 weeks at okpono okono oml 119,agip/npdc but that was i.t in 2009 though. I weighed 70kg when i landed on the platform and was 74kg when i left. I still dream of the food, i ate 4 times a day, never missed tea breaks, snacks, indian food, turkish, persian delicacies etc.lord, my plate was always full.i spent more time in the shower enjoying the company of adjustable hot and cold shower/mini jac.which was very therapeutic. It was then i knew dstv had some real poorn channels, that was my fav.channel tongue. I had a white friend mr terry, funny guy.many good experiences.no time to sulk over the past.

ocman: Offshore life is pretty interesting, challenging in some interesting and nostalgic manner. It is a working environment that comes with a lot of sweet and sour mood swings you would always love to relish both. It is a second home to us here because we spend half of year on this atlantic ocean with people who are related to us by blood. As i write now from Gulf of Guinea, i am in joyous mode because i would be going on time-off tomorrow (two weeks completion eminent).

Such a night as this, the personnel going on time-off the next day usually sing this song, "one more night" as they wind down the day's activity. I am also praying that the weather is clement tomorrow so that there won't be any delay in chopper arrival by the expected ETA. I can't wait to see my family. When you miss them much, the sour mood comes handy; and lots of other reasons that makes us moody. Example, when you miss your alcohol too much, mehn! you go wan deactivate. lol! Offshore work is very awesome and interesting. It is a nice place to work! It stretches your imagination, expands your thinking and engineering abilities. It is a place, i can say almost all, if not all engineering disciplines converged. It is a melting pot of some sort in that regard. The first time i landed here, i was like "wow". This is lovely, seeing live all what i have heard and read happen before me live and direct really left me with a great sense of accomplishment. I felt that aura of a real engineer in the making...lol.

In my early days here, i was astonished at how complicated and intertwined the whole platform was, i saw that all aspects of engineering was represented. One of such days, i was less busy, i took it upon myself to write out the engineering aspects that were represented in the offshore work. To my greatest surprised i couldn't pick an engineering course that was wanted. Aeronautic, marine, subsea, chemical, electrical, biomedical, mechanical, computer, civil, metallurgical, just name. I really felt so proud and happy to have chosen this field. Mind you, we have administrative officer here; so Art inclined graduates could handle such a position but a chemical engineer is our admin officer. Trust engineers (ubiquitous and versatile species).

Here, there is superfluity of food. buffet twice a week, tea break twice per day, and snacks points around the designated points on the accommodation platform. Beautiful sick bay managed by experienced and beautiful nurse and a doctor. I can't type more now maybe latter. A lot of experience and just a lot to say but it worth experiencing them by oneself. I need to go and pack. Missing my sweet family........

bye...........sinings* one more night, just give me that one more night.....................lol

Such a good writer

This thread is a highly motivating one. Am a student Of Mechanical and productions engineering here in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi. and i wish that one day probably after graduation, i would get to work offshore.

I really need you that are into it aleady to give a little piece of advice on how to make it up there without being stressed up. Cus obviously you all sound relaxed and cool now. You know what u see on your pay slip makes you smile. Definitely u must have been through some hard times. Nothing good comes easy.

please give us aspirant areas where we should focus more on. God bless y'all.
