Hmmn Top10Nigeria; interesting CV, attractive remuneration.

But did you say u and ur wife both work offshore? Pardon my curiousity but do u have kids and if you do; how do u manage the home front?

@Amusaopeyemi; U wanna secure ur future by marrying oyel husband grin issorait o, i wish u luck.
Well, let's just say all that glitters isn't gold. I have a lot of them as friends with broken homes and i really don't understand it cos they are sweet guys. I also have a friend currently married to one and she complains a lot;maybe she's just not used to the long periods of absence yet. She confessed to me that she "likes it when he's away" cos its always one issue or the other when he's around. Their marriage is young though. So my dear, work hard and make your money so that you can marry someone you love and not just for the title orthe job. Although i know u were just kidding withur comment.

Abeg offshore guys, i wan ask una kweshion, make una no crucify me o...

Is it true that there's a whole lot of man-loving going on offshore (i read something like dat somewhere)?

And why do u guys dress so shabbily with dem boots n weak t-hirts on shore. Is that a sort of camouflage so that people don't know what u're worth or is it just the ones i know?

shocked 32 million for someone with 15 years of experience sounds small to me. I would have thought the majors pay better. if I may ask, are you a technician?

32million means that plus tax I am doing about 40. Also, my low 32 has to do with age and not yrs. Age is not on my side. I am 32. I have a colleague on my level who is 46 and on my same level earning 47mil. Also wages grow in "triangles". As you grow, your salary growth stalls. It has nothing to do with Technician or Engineering. Eg. my overall boss who is like the Installation manager earns about 70Mil and he has not had a salary increment for 3yrs because he has maxed out and only gets 5% annual productivity bonus and asset optimization bonus which is undefined depending on how much cost he saves. He is 30yrs in service, now Senior management and looking to retire in 2yrs. So salary is defined by a combination of all kinds of things that HR experts put together. Your first 10yrs, your salary will grow faster but then remember that the company wants to make sure they control how much pension they will have to pay you after retirement, especially considering that Nigeria staff get automatic 11% increase every year due to Nigeria inflation, plus the company is paying a percentage of your salary into your RSA. So there is a conscious effort to manage how much pension you will be due as at the time of retirement which makes also affects your salary growth.

top10nigeria: The good thing about nairaland is you’ll never know me so I can write everything and not worry about my identity.
I work offshore and my Wife works offshore(Sub-sea Engineer). I work 2weeks tour while she works 4weeks tour.
The surest way of working offshore is to graduate first Class Engineering/Geo Sciences. My Wife had a first Class Chemical Engineering and Mine is Electronics. Production Oil companies won’t even invite you for Aptitude test if you do not have a 2-1 that is 4.0 and above. And now we have a lot of Nigerians with masters from UK, so its becoming harder for them to employ people with first degree. Now I am assuming you don’t have connections and your Parents are as broke as mine were when they were sending me to school. So that is one path to working offshore and I will call these people employed directly by the Oil companies as Level 1.
Another path is to be a Technical Non-Pro, eg. Cook, Secretary, medical, laundry, welder, painter, deck hands, etc… To make it easier, I will label this Level 2. Most of these people are on contract so they don’t get same level of compensation.
Eg. The average cook/laundry staff earns 840,000/yr
Average Technical Support eg. Pipe fitter/secretary/Welder etc will earn 4-8million a year
But the level 1 guys earn more.
Eg. Personally I earned a total remuneration of 32million last year and my wife Earned 23million last year. (I work for the majors while my Wife works for a Drilling Company – the majors(Exxonmobil / Total/ Shell / Chevron / Agip) always pay more than the drilling (Schlumberger / Transocean / Halliburton)
So the first thing I want those who want to work offshore to do is decide what type of job they want to do offshore. Do you want to be Level 1 or Level 2?
Personally, I have 15yrs of experience and I work in a production company so I am high paying. I don’t think there is anybody within my team including the 2year olds who earns a TR of less than 20million.
So I will encourage you guys to go back to your books and read them so hard.
For me the best part of working offshore is the 2weeks off. I will not transfer to the office for a 200% increase in wages and maybe its because I started working offshore when I was 18. Plus I work on measurement and control systems, so I don’t do any physical work like my folks in mechanical who have to work on pumps, so I am on the best job in the world right now. Also, the Time off allows me to spend time on my other endeavors and For me that is the best part of working offshore. Note: My Wife hates it, but because I am away half of the time, she is managing the job until she can go back to school for her masters.
I hope this adds a different perspective to the conversation.

I am not so concerned about his pay package (top10nigeria). Maybe his years of experience dates back to when he started working offshore at the age of 18 (probably started as a technician before gaining an engineering degree). I wouldn't even want to discuss remuneration here.

But I wonder if the 15 years experience is all offshore related. I can't see an engineer working offshore for 15 straight years (only technicians, operators, drilling supervisors, cook, etc. do that). It's almost impossible (for various reasons).

Most engineers in the oil industry don't like working offshore. They will rather work in the office and do a 9-5 job. It's quite hazardous working offshore. The life over there is regimented, and the living condition, though okay, are not as comfortable as a usual home. Many who work offshore are looking for office functions.

Most people who admire offshore jobs know very little about oil and gas industry. Once they get into industry, they get a better picture and prefer office roles.

Cheers..

I heard the NNPC guys start low and then have huge amounts as pension/gratuity. I remember my boss told me last year his gratuity would be 110million. I think any more than that range would be insane by any company to pay retiring staff. And maybe that's why NNPC is not working. LOL!!!!!!!!!

17- 1 = 16 ( Finished Uni at 16 with 1st Class in Electronics Engineering)

I started working offshore as a Technician, you are right. but when I graduated, I couldn't move. All the engineering positions I got was to go on land for the same amount of pay, so I no gree. Like I said, for me, the best part is the off time especially as I wanted time for my plenty waka and looking at 8-4 everyday for the rest of my life in lagos meaning I have to wake up by 5:30 every morning and get home by 8pm, I couldn't deal with it. So its a personal thing. like I said, my Wife hates it but I ask her to tell me another job which would allow us to spend so much time together travelling.

Very interesting thread and big kudos to you guys out there cos its not easy.
I've worked on some OML and OPL fields both offshore and onshore as an environmental field officer(contract staff) and its been an amazing experience for me. Each time I go back to work its always like its my first time. I love the sea and the serenity is divine, sea animals and the endless stretch of the ocean makes you appreciate God the more. Mmmmmm Foooood!!!! Its in abundance you get to enjoy various types of dishes, for a lady like me I tend to skip d midday meal and try to jump start my metabolism with breakfast also I exercise a lot to let off both positive and negative energy. The bathroom is my best spot because the mixture of both hot and cold water is therapeutic and I get to spend quality time there. At night when the sea is not rough,it rocks your boat and you get to sleep like a baby,on the rig its just normal.
The job is fun but has got its dangerous side. I remember a certain time during the rainy season when the sea was pretty rough, whilst going about my normal work a rough storm came upon us and I was almost swept into the ocean, thank God I'm alive to tell the story but I wasn't deterred from going back offshore. I hope to get a permanent job and continue with this job I love so much. .......Deuces

like top10nigeria said , that is why NNPC isnt working. have a take on saudi aramco , that company employs skilled workers from europe . I dont know when our state owned company would start doing that. any reform in the industry has got to start from the top.

majekdom2: yes , they catch fishes ..... is offshore work included in any of ur course of study ?
Honestly, nothing pisses me off more than seeing someone who is ignorant and also displays arrogance in his ignorance.
Dude, from the above statement its clear you have never gone close to an oil facility before in your life. Go to land, swamp and offshore rigs, and you'll see technicians many of whom only have their SSCE results, but are making twice the salary of a medical doctor in a week. Why? Because they did some technical courses like welding, scaffolding, sandblasting e.t.c. and these technicians are needed more on these oil platforms than we graduate engineers, we design and supervise while they carry out the physical job, and that's what matters the most.
My point is it doesn't matter what you studied, just do a good practical short-term course and your good to go.
So majekdom never display your ignorance before the public like this again. What you don't know, ask and you'll be guided.
I have a friend that studied English linguistics, but he is working with a multinational oil serviceing company in Quatar his daily allowance is terribly, unbelievably and outrageously high.
So adbash, it doesn't matter what you studied, all that matters is are willing to learn and most importantly you get mind?

I almost fell off my chair laughing. I have two degrees. One in Electronics and another in IMC. The IMC got me the job and made me spend 2yrs in University to get a Bsc. So what you should do is tell your younger ones to start taking Havard classes from their SS1 http://www.extension.harvard.edu/ With this, they can move faster through the school process.
