THE JON BEE STORY
My name is Jon. I suffer from AP. AP is a condition whereby your skin itches badly as a result of contact with water (moisture, sweat, humidity etc)
During the course of our interaction I’ll be telling you my story, maybe do some Q&A and then tell you how to manage this situation successfully.

I've been dealing with this condition since I was five, I'm thirty-five now. This condition started in my pre-school year and I can recall sad memories of days I have to skip school (even exams) cause of this crazy-like itching. Back in the days my mom used to rub palm-oil all over my body in vain. As time progress I dropped the use of sponge (opted for soap and water only… till date) as I discovered that its use aggravates my sufferings.
Over the years, I  would suffer this terrible torment. I experience a lot of humiliations from a doctor who could neither diagnose my condition nor cure it, parents who are confused & probably thought I was going psycho, to friends/family who doubt my sincerity in the first place.
As a kid my mum forbade me from playing in the rain, I get confused & scared when I hear the word “bath” and break down into a mad episode after few minutes of sport. Every time this attack happens, I always got depressed.

THE ITCH
No one else in my family has this condition, and doctors literally laugh at me or think I'm mentally ill when I try to explain it to them. It's really horrible to have something that the medical world discounts.
I have a five-year-old, and any time I see her itch, I start to become so afraid that he could develop this, too, and I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

When I get out of the shower and I'm having an episode, a dirty or cluttered room drives me mad. And the thought of putting on an outfit, like pajamas, that are "dirty" (aka not fresh out of the dryer) will also disturbs me.
I know these sounds absolutely nuts, but ask those that have experienced this.

I go into genuine rage when I'm having an episode. I'm normally very difficult - if not impossible - to anger, but when I'm having a bad attack, the anger is like a separate symptom. I'm not angry BECAUSE I'm uncomfortable; anger seems to be a part of the attack.
It's very odd. I tend to shut myself in the bedroom and warn my partner not to speak to me for 30 minutes or until I come out, as I'm fuming. I become totally irrational and,  just very, very angry.
I go from laid back to rage-filled when I'm having an episode, and I hate it. Luckily my partner is very understanding and leaves me to myself when this happens.

THE TRIGGER & THE CONTROL

I've been keeping everything moderately in control with hot showers, keeping a comfortable trouser and cotton singlet on humid days. Everything drives me mad when I'm having an "episode".
Yes, I have a major problem with dust and I can't walk on carpet after I get out of a shower - I have to have ankle socks or bedroom shoes on. Dust activates the problem - at least for me. I have tiles, but if I'm somewhere else visiting - I can't stand it if I get out of the shower and into a "dirty" room - it makes me itch. Worst scenario for me is a hot, humid, dusty room - it makes me cringe just thinking about it. The only way around a condition like that is to have a little sunlight.

Soft, clean, wrinkle-free 100% cotton that is worn in is the best! Or jumping into your bed - with clean, crisp, cool, cotton sheets. Worst scenario: bed sheets that are not 100% cotton and have a low thread count in a hot, humid room that is dusty (I had to stay in a room like that once and I will never EVER do that to myself again!)
I have noticed over the years that dust triggers my AP itch (the kind we all know is more intense than a standard itch response). And I look for a clean cotton set of PJs.

The best trick I use to keep the itch at bay is bathing in baking soda water. I add oatmeal to it as well with water as hot as I can stand it. I miss taking showers but I don't miss the immediate burning of the "itch".

BEDTIME ET AL
Regarding bedroom time -Anytime it is hot and humid and there is friction - the itching erupts - but usually in the aftermath. I try to gauge those "moments" with air conditioning adjustments, but sometimes I can't do that beforehand and I deal with the consequences - mainly this happens to me during the hot humid season.
Bedroom time is always tricky, and the conditions must be just right before I will take a chance. My partner is wonderfully understanding. It took my partner some time to understand I wasn't trying to be "distant" when I immediately jump out of bed, get dressed followed by laying as motionless as possible and pray that the itch will stop before it gets out of control.
Well, I have been mostly itch-free throughout the years - a couple of minor
attacks but nothing insurmountable
P.S.: Exposure to healthy sunlight helps.

Oga, i suffer from the same problem.Itis actually an allergy and you need an anti allergy nasal spray called BECONASE to combat it.After taking beconase for about a week you should be able to bathe with sponge anytime you like and your energy level should increase because the allergy also makes your energy dwindle.

Now the bad news,beconase has not been available in Nigeria since 2008 because of the law regulating aerosol propellants and please dont get the substitutes as they did not work for me at least.

You need to ask any of your friends travelling to Britain or the U.S and get them to buy it for you.You should be able to get it over the internet but the retailers dont like dealing with Nigerians because we have proven ourselves to be the least trustworthy people on earth.

I used to get it for 7pounds sterling in london chemists when i was living in the UK but on getting to Nigeria i found it unavailable.Get it and use it for about a week and trust me you will be singing in the shower.

Thanks for contribution. My advice is for sufferer to be cautious, as we have a myriads of drugs, radiotherapy etc. Which are carcinogenic for the treatment of this itch. The HOT TIPS below are cheap, easy and has no side effect

HOT TIPS
I'm going to share with you exactly what works for me and how I treat my AP and keep the itching away- hope this helps
This is what I do and it's been working for me for 5 years:
1. Take 90% of my showers (hot) at night - most of the time and I put the water on as hot as I can stand it towards the end and let it run on my limbs and back for 2 minutes. Pat dry after getting out - no rubbing and no putting on lotion. No lotion on legs or arms at all!
2. I put on soft, 100% cotton leggings or PJ immediately after my shower
3. In the warm season, when it's very hot and humid - I have to have my air conditioning on and it must be set no higher than 24 *C.
4. Bed sheets must be a high thread count and be 100%, soft cotton
5. Keep dust to a minimum and try to have clean tile floors or use bathroom slippers around the room.
6. Staying away from home? You must be sure your hotel bathrooms have very hot water temps for showering and keep ankle socks or bedroom shoes on if you are getting out of a shower and onto carpet.
7. Air purifier in bedroom helps alot.
8. This may be the psychological part - but going into a dirty/messy cluttered bathroom and dusty, cluttered bedroom makes me go crazy and I start itching - so, I try to keep things "minimal and serene in both of those rooms" - helps so much. As rule keep everything clean, tidy and orderly
I don't deal with intense itching anymore b/c of the above. It works for me. Hope this helps at least - some of you out there who deal with AP!

I still remember those nights in school when I stay up all night to scratch my itch, every one thought it was weird cos I didn't have any rash infact they were begining to think I only wanted attention. I used hydrocortisone, bt never really made it go away competely,mum told me to learn how to conciously stop myself when th urge to itch comes, somehow when I left that town, the itch stopped.
About 6 weeks ago the itch came back, and that's after 4 years, a friend now told me to get loratadine, I reluctantly got it and instantly the itch stopped

I use a 100% cotton soft face towel as my sponge. This condition is quite a challenge. It's more torturing when you are amidst a group and you just finished taking your bath, and the questions keep coming. I suffered those years back in school.

Thanks for this post. This is the first time I see the symptoms laid down just the way it affects me. Like u said the culprits are sweat , heat and dirt. A combination of the three is diabolical.
I have grown to manage it over the years. I avoid group programs retreats etc. A more comfortable lifestyle and work environment has made the symptoms now occasional for me. My wife doesnt know. She only questions why I don't dab myself dry in the bath before coming into the bedroom I just ignore her.

i dont suffer such extreme rage and anger during my itch and mine doesnt last more than 10mins but even as it is as bad as what you used to suffer, its still not pleasant. i have been suffering mine since i was very little and now i am 31. two yrs ago when after giving birth, i noticed the itching attacks disappeared. i didnt change homes, water, soap, disinfectant or anything, it just disappeared. now i m pregnant for my second child and just last month, the monster reappeared again. i am naturally a squeaky clean person and the itch is triggered by cold bath, dirty bathroom, dirty towel, unkept bed, dirty bedsheets and dirty night wears. so i ensure everywhere is excellently tidy before having my bath.
the remedies you mentioned are exactly what works for me. tidiness, sunlight, very hot water and neat clothing and bedding. never knew it was a condition that had a name, thought i and my siblings were the only sufferers on the face of the earth(i, my sis and my brother suffer from the itching). my sis is a pharmacist in the UK, so i will ask her to check out the name; aquagenic pruiritus; wow! what a name, kinda suits the condition, lol. thanks for sharing.............i used to go months without sponging in the past but recently i feel uncomfortable if i dont spongebath for two days so i began sponge-bathing again i think thats why it returned. maybe i would have to consider going back to the status quo of using only medicated soap (dettol) and hot water to bath. as for others calling it allergy or what have you, i dont think they r talking about the same condition. nice post JB

I have lived wt ds itching 4 a long time now, I had 2 clean my room b4 a bath n imagine clean environments.de resent phase I had wz Terrible cuz I wz evn afraid 2 wash cloths n feed my baby cuz I wz scared of water touching me.Ds is what worked 4 me after a long while.
~ I treated malaria
~ Dewormed wt combantrin
~ started taking Axitin tablets 1 twice daily wt blood tabs.
~ while bathing wt a new soap wtout sponge
~ rubbing Tribotan(adult) wt mycoten creams after bath.
Avoiding fan.

mine has been since i was a kid it happens to 4 of my siblings but ours is not severe i bath with hot water and i use sponge even in hot weather i bathe hot water,i cant use cold water 2 bathe ,my hub is surprised at this

There is no need for doubts because It was indeed a harrowing encounter for my years with life itching seriously after every bath. But as at today I gotten treated with new scientific breakthrough product and treatment therapy from Dr.Lanndrew who is an exceptional Australian trained Nigerian skin doctor. He helped me and provided me consistent treatment to defeat this problem. I thk God for using him oh. Atleast there are still good ppl in Nigeria doing great things. My story and ordeal started since 2003 during which i ve under gone series of diagnoses/medications to know what causes my itching after bath, but to no avail. Thank God I finally got a name for it. Exactly what I suffer but mine lasts for just 10 minutes. I will look for the Loratadine drug. I have gone to different big hospitals even Prime Medicals Clinic in Port Harcourt all to no avail.

Unkempt place, cold water, and using sponge triggers mine, but whenever I add Disinfectant to the water, the itching reduces.

Wow, this is educative. I've also lived with the same condition for years. It's good to know am not the only one with the condition, because i thought i was.

I got same ish also weneva i bath with sponge. Eva since I stopped bathing with sponge since 2 years now, i dont itch again after bath. I only use soap n cold water to bath for 2 years now.

Happened to me too.. But alof a sudden, it stopped.. Can't fathom it still tho
