Hi friends in nairaland,

Water Melon farming is real as I said because am a big time committed farmer having my large scale farm in Ota, Ogun state. Water Melon farming is capital intensive in terms of land, seedlings and Labour but has high returns for your investment.

However, for one 2 start water melon farming,

1st, one has to undergo a training programme either of a two-day or a one week depending on your decision to start-up.
A two-day course/practical will cost a prospective entreprenuer the sum of 15,000/20000.

After the training programme, the entrepreneur is expected 2 source for the land/seedlings for the farming with the help of the consultant.

Thereafter, the intending farmer will begin the preparation of the farm land by clearing and the procurement of the hybreed seedlings.

The expected harvest is for 85 days that means round the clock for one year is 4 harvests

In marketting, there is already market you can sell, open market, dealers, hoteliers, etc

Further enquiries can be forwarded to me on this post in nairaland , i will be pleased to reply.

Thanks

For those interested, a practical step-by-step guide to profitable watermelon business has just been prepared by a team of watermelon farmers and researchers from Benin city in Edo state. The initial investment is less than N30,000 with a possibility of making over 600% profit. All you need-from land preparation, getting planting materials that are already treated with chemicals, finding market without streess etc are a few of what you get in this all-in-one manual.

For details, call 08096940594, 08038310923, 08074386565 or send an e-mail to oguntolapraisejah@gmail.com or ibk_joe2001@yahoo.com.

Don't be motivated by the Fat Returns On Investment (ROI) from Watermelon farming alone but be driven by Vision and be fueled by Passion for putting Fruits and Food on the table of many People through Value-added Food and Agriculture Restoration.

A very good loamy soil but no matter how good the soil is u need to put manuare becos water melon is a very greedy and lots of nutrients. I have my farm in osogbo, osun state and the land I got is doing well for my cucumber and water melon

Re: Water Melon Farming ( A Money Spinner) by smithboela(m): 8:02am On Sep 05, 2014
These guys are out here to sell manual to you. What you need to do is get land, get regular supply of water, have sandy loam or loamy soil and the soil must be well drained. Get treated seeds from IITA in Ibadan, or any agricultural seeds outlets through out the nation. The seed always come in Tin can. Prepare the land, add manure 1 week before planting the seed directly on site. You can decide to plant the seed in nursery bags first, before transplanting on the site. Spacing is 60cm by 1.8 metre. Watermelon germinates btw 7-10 days. It matures btw 80-90 days. Water less when they are flowering, when the fruit come out, don't let it rest on the ground directly, put dried leaf to the place the fruit will be laying on the ground.

My advise is that u first do a small trial because it is a very risky farming & u must get it right or you lose u hard earn cash. But it is do able. Buy Technism seeds in can , most of the crop are subsistable to insect attack but once u apply insecticide & herbicides as at when due it will do well, lizards are watermelon enemy so watch out, The month of september is the right time to plant but it does not like too much rain , u can intercrop with cassava or maize.

Plantain and watermelon goes together just that the plantain should not be more than 4months old before you intercrop it with water melon.

People have really said it all here on this trend. Water melon as little as I know its an heavy feeder just like maize. To have bigger fruits, u ave to fertilzer twice. It require weekly spraying of insecticide and fungicide, in area like south west cos insect and pest infest(ion are high. So u need to deal with them other wise u get nothing, I prefer u space it 6ft apart to avoid flower shedding, the more space the bigger ur fruit. U need a well drained soil dat will not lodge water, though it is called watermelon but does not like much water. early season and late planting is best time, Ie early march and september for those in south west. Ur site should be well plough so dat the root can easily penetrate to source for nutrients(food) the more sunlight u have during fruiting the bigger and sweeter ur fruit so watch ur timing. sincerely u need just 10 to 11weeks to harvest ur water melon from planting to harvest. For ur seeds and other enquiry called the number on my signature, Good luck. NB: do not plant water melon near a farm where normal melon (Egusi) was planted. Because the melon and watermelon are the same family, it will cross pollinate and ur watermelon will taste bitter. Also do not plant close to an existing water melon farm because the insect and pest in the older field will prefer to feed on ur own new crops, which u may not be able to handle. And finaly practise a good crop rotation while planting watermelon and pls avoid shades. It a sun loving plants.
