The question is, does he owe them the duty to reveal information beyond what he has revealed in his visa application?

Do they have the right to invade his privacy by wading into his phone contacts in the manner they did? can you treat a British citizen like this in Nigeria?

If you find him suspicious, set police to watch his moves while in the UK, because the same you granted him visa with the information he volunteered on application.

We like looking at every Nigerian as a devil and thats a very wrong attitude. Why wont the foreigners treat us that way?

This is one of the ill treatments meted out to a Nigerian recently in the UK.

My friend was traveling to the UK to meet a friend of his for some important discussions. His wife's younger sister stays in London and was not aware of his arrival as he wanted to stay in the hotel throughout his visit without any disturbance.

On arriving London, Immigration officers asked him if he knew anyone in London, to which he said no. In what looked like a drama, they took his phone from him and one of the officers went to an office, searched through the phone, found a London Number and called it. My guy's sister-in-law picked and answered all the questions they posed thinking the sister's husband was in trouble.

Like another drama, mu guy found himself in a room, and thereafter ushered to a waiting plane going to Lagos.

This is absolutely astonishing!
I just hate it when these useless whites start thinking they are here to do the whole black world a favour when you visit them.
If someone's Uk number is in my phone but I have made confirmed hotel accommodations for my stay, how is that Immigration's problem.
Though I won't claim to know UK immigration laws but this particular one is so ridiculous.
Dude wasn't planning to put up with the inlaw, so how is that a problem?
Anyway, what do I know about British Law?

And for some people saying why didn't he say it, I travel to anywhere I like and lodge in the best hotel I can afford without bothering any family/friend that I know in that city, as long as they are not part of my reason for visiting at that time.
Sometimes, it's even after I've left that I call and chat them up on how I visited their city.

They have no right to check his phone know your right wherever you go. They know we don't know anything now so they treat us like animals. They can't even demand your passport its a Nigerian property.

It's not about knowing the uk immigration rules it's about being honest. All he would have said was yes I do but I never intend seeing her.

It's called deception simple.

Anyway, I will admit that the world's security situation is making everybody to be on the edge these days.
But the fact is that sometimes there are people you know but you don't want to be identified with, for personal reasons.
It would have been different if the guy submitted her name as a relative in his VISA form, and then deny her on entry.

Are you sure that's the truth, cos from my own experience as long as you have a reasonable reason you will not be delayed at the counter. And for them to have asked for his phone, they must have suspected something

You should stuck up your "holier than thou attitude". You're even wishing him a lengthy ban? That's very inconsiderate! Everyone lies, especially in this case where he doesn't want anything do with his inlaw!
Keep quiet not every one lies. You should try telling the truth more often it....".Do you know anyone in the UK?" correct answer: Yes I do.

There is more to this i'm sure because immigration just do not take your phone and indulge themselves, first off he should have said the truth and secondly he might have given them wrong vibes. Also they would have assessed him as a potential illegal immigrant. It's not that he had a visa on arrival or visa exemption so he has gotten a uk visa and during the visa stage there wasnt any hiccups but i like to think that on arrival in the uk the guy must have pushed the wrong buttons on arrival and that resulted to his deportation. Well as the saying goes, a visa isn't confirmed proof of your entry to any country. Anything can arise on arrival.

You are totally prejudiced into your Nigerian village, tribal mentality.

What he must have done is look guilty when trying to pass immigration, they are specially trained to spot signs.
As border control agents they have every right to question anyone that arrouses their suspicion.
They will question people from any country.
You are seeking the privilage of entering their country, you have NO "right of entry."
This applies all over the world, not just UK.

U are absolutely correct.
Re: He Was Deported On Arriving UK. by desiji: 1:16pm On Mar 24, 2015
There must have a been considerable doubts before immigration will call the party and secondly nobody knows if the Sister in law told immigration that she knows he is coming and would be staying with her. Which does not tally with what he has told immigration.

I agree there is more to the story as before the UKBA take your phone and go through they must have seen something to make them believe he was not coming for what he claim.

With regards to explaining why he said he knew no one, unfortunately once you have been caught in a lie you lose credibility and asking for a reason to explain why he lied doesn't cut it.

This is a country where politicians step down when caught in a lie. The chairman of the Conservative party was recently caught in what I would say is small lie in the grand scheme of things and the guy is under so much pressure from the press and opposition.

obailala:

There is certainly more to this story than the you or your friend is telling us. If what you have narrated is the complete story, then I would say the UKBA guys were wrong.

Was he given a chance to explain why he claimed he knew no one?... He had a hotel booked, he was in the country for business meeting (probably in a town out of London), he had no intentions of seeing his in-law and didn't even think it fit to inform her. He probably didnt even know if she was resident in London or in another town. If I were the man and was casually asked by the immigration guys, I would likely have just given a similar casual answer since my sister in-law's existence was inconsequential to my visit. It becomes a problem only if the immigration guys laid serious emphasis on the question but the man still insisted he knew no one.

Just like I said, there is more to this story than your friend narrated. The immigration guys wouldn't just deport people for such a flimsy reason.

Even from the op's story I can smell something fishy. "he travelled to uk to have an important discussion with a friend" You travel 6hours and waste over 300k so as to have an important discussion with a friend ? With mtn I bet you wont spend 20k calling . This wasn't a business trip from what I can deduce from the story . I hope he wasn't only deported he should as well be remanded in ikeja prison for a week!

Seriously I don't see what the OP narrated as a flimsy reason...
Maybe anxiety took the better part of him and his eyes were rolling like someone that fart in a commercial bus grin
The person behind the counter couldn't just get his head around why a man thats travelling for international business cant compose himself. Then he lied
Instead of drilling him and wasting time and resources they just quietly sent him back undecided

The guy was unlucky. Same happened to me,when i applied for my visa i had friends in uk but didn't have thier addresses and phone numbers.cos we were not keeping in touch.cos of dat,i filled my form dat i didn't know anybody in d uk.after my first and second visits,i got in touch with them.then,i had 2 years visa.on my third visit i planned to stay one week in d hotel and d second week with a friend.d hotel i booked was at Milton Keynes very close to my friends house.d immigration officer frowned at d choice of Milton Keynes cos its far from London hence he detained me.i quickly called my friend and he called his lawyer and told me to quickly delete all uk nos.on my phone.they took my phone checked for uk nos.,took my finger prints and called my friend who said he invited me to his house for a week.my account details was checked in Nigeria my atm balance was checked, my luggages were checked despite d fact dat ve been to London twice b4 then,i ve also travelled to south africa, ghana and dubai.at d end of d day,i was left off the hook after 8 hours. cos of my account balance and my friend dat called. even at dat, they still detain me for few hours anytime im in d uk cos its already on their systems.till my visa expires and i tell them those i know in d uk in my next application before i can be free. ve visited 12 times after then.my next visa application is in july.d guy was just unfortunate.NOTE,anytime ure booking hotel reservation make sure its in London town to avoid suspicions.

I find it difficult to believe this story.

What important discussion does he need to travel to the UK to have? Why cant he discuss over the phone or emails?

Anyway, so he travelled to the UK, and told UKBA that he's meeting a friend but instead of ringing said friend they decided to call someone else altogether and then decided to deport him without speaking to his friend? really There's more to this than has been said here and i can bet that he's lying about what happened. If he could lie to UKBA, what is to say he's not lying about the reason for his deportation?

I saw a documentaty about australia's border control once and a 'nigerian' lawyer who got caught out. He said that he was attending a conference, had a hotel booking, etc. when they checked out all the addresses, no one had heard of him! So of course, he was deported.

People shoud learn to tell the truth.. Lies will always cost more in the end

His phone is not a document they have no right to ask for his phone he has all the right not to give it. You don't have to do all they tell you thinking they would let you go. The fact is you look to clean and when you are shit happens men. However if they ask for your phone they might as well as for his pants. They would have to get a warrant to check his phone.

The truth is we all should repair our country so that we don't have to go to other countries. With this kind of president we have progress is in extinction in Nigeria. If we have naira equivalent to pounds or dollars we there should be know reason for other countries to be harassing our passport.

The truth abt UK is that they are one racist country and he shouldn't give any details of someone he knows in UK cos he didn't state it in his application and moreover u can't come and cause wahala for the pple there, who knows if they av a paper to live in the UK ? He prevented a lot of damages for the family and I'm sure the immigration officers will keep an eye on those couples too

@ "everyone lies". You need to change the kind of people you associate with. There's way more to life than you think.

Its quite unfortunate that some Nigerians think like this. The truth wouldn't have hurt him one bit but he choose to give an unnecessary lie. These kind of people are the major problems of Nigeria, thinking you can just get away with breaking the law or being dishonest. In saner climes, people are held by their words and integrity, honesty and reliability go a long way. In Europe, if you have an appointment at 12:00pm and get there 12:05pm, no one will attend to you and you'll be regarded as unreliable. But alas, we are proud to boast about "African time" and make it seem like it is an achievement to be unreliable.

And that's where we are today, a nation that has moved nowhere after 54years. Our indicipline and non chalance has cost us our prestige and rendered us static, if not backward in our "perceived" development.

The youths have been misled to believe what is wrong is right and vise versa. I believe its time we start being real to ourselves.

Hello Mister
There is absolutely nothing wrong with not being attentive and a slave to time!
Just do the right thing in cultures where they even breathe to the ticking of the clock

And that is not the reason we are backwards
The people you admire and love more than your own are the reason
Jeez!

About lying?
Relative.....and the reason fuelling the lie matters? At least in the African culture...respect that
To spare someone from hurt..or just be cruelly honest?
It is a grey area...sometimes...truth for the sake of itself is off...I certainly would tell a lie if it would be just the kind and protective of others thing to do
Your point is good, but for the Africa hating tone in your post I wanna throw a shoe at you!! If only you knew
Aaarrrggghhh
