RE : Oba Akiolu, Lagos And Ndi Igbo by PabloAfricanus(m): 11:19pm On Apr 06, 2015
The recent statements by Oba Akiolu are not only uncalled for, but condemnable.
Jimi Agbaje is not an Igbo man, neither is Ambode.
If the Igbos were reprimanded by the Oba for supporting an Igbo contestant e.g. Okoroji to the detriment of the popular Lagosian candidate
then he might have a point. Cos I don't think its healthy to offend the political sensibilities of the rulers of any land.
Having said that, Lagos APGA recently adopted Ambode, Okoroji has since dropped out, APC is now the majority party and as it is Tinubu and Akiolu are in the forefront of APC. So who's threatening who?
The majority of the Igbos are sadly apolitical, preferring to watch the action on TV or read it in the papers.
Only a few ( < 10% IMO) actually give a hoot about politics and the Oba as a former senior police officer with a high level political exposure
is aware of these facts, so there is no excuse of "Igbos are trying to take over Lagos" or any of that b**lsh**t diatribe.
This is a clear and calculated attempt at intimidation and he should be held responsible for any violence against Igbo life and property in the SW.
Okoroji has since fallen out of the race, there is no Igbo contender in the race so what's the fear?

The fact of the matter is that Lagos is a West Africa's foremost cosmopolitan city and that is NOT due to Lagos being a Yoruba state
or the Igbos "developing" Lagos (whatever that means).
IMO, the credit for positioning Lagos to be the melting pot of Nigeria should be given to :

1) The British colonial masters...for making Lagos their base and developing both Lagos mainland and island.
Ikoyi, Obalande, Isal Eko, Ebute Metta, Yaba still bear out the detailed planning of the British. They even gave
lagos island a name "Victoria Island" in typical colonial style. They could actually have chosen any other port town
along the shores of Nigeria.

2) The Federal govt., for designating and developing Lagos as the FEDERAL CAPITAL with FEDERAL RESOURCES.
The bulk of the infrastructure in Lagos today was put in place by the British and the FG.

3) Nnamdi Azikiwe for moving the capital from Calabar to Lagos. Don't know what informed the move though.
But Calabar would have done fine as a Federal capital.

With the above, it is clear that Lagos while being a Yoruba state is a HOME FOR ALL as far Nigeria is concerned.
And to the best of my knowledge, Yorubas, Igbos, Hausas, Fulanis,Edos, Idomas, Nupes, Efiks etc. have all gotten
along fine and lived peacefully in Lagos without any ethnic group taking out their anger on others.
So the Oba's outburst must be about something else bugging him, as I'm sure the Igbos are not the only
ethnic groups in Lagos. And for the records, some one should please remind Akiolu that he is not the "owner" of Lagos,
neither is he the arbiter of affairs in Lagos.
Oba Rilwan Akiolu is simply a retired Federal Police commissioner who happens to the come from
the Edo line of kings in Lagos Island(just Lagos Island mind you).
He also happens to the current member of that family APPOINTED by the state governor of LAGOS state to the traditional
title and chair of Oba of Lagos (Island), there are other domains in Lagos that Akiolu holds no sway over.
http://www.lagosstate.gov.ng/pagemenus.php?p=64&k=32

He could actually be deposed by Fashola tomorrow if it has to come to that.
So he should get his act together and stop trying to deny the reality of the cosmopolitan nature of his home state.
The other ethnic groups have come of age in Lagos and have a right to fair representation.
Its on us and the reality is not going away while Nigeria remains a country.

With the new found confidence in an incoming APC government, such statements reek of ignorance and tribalism.
Oba you are on record as saying you "selected" Ambode, I take it to mean you were influential in the emergence of his candidacy.
As the implications are quite enormous and can be argued out in a court case by aggrieved and disenfrachised members of Lagos APC.
We all know Ambode is Tinubu's anointed candidate and was chosen in favour Fashola's own man Sasore.
Some aggrieved Lagos APC members could actually score cheap points with these unguarded statements in a court case
against Ambode's eligibility. An apology is in order, that will show who the superior man is.

The cussing and swearing by Allah with death by lagoon threats are just crass.
Yorubas are well know for being public officials in Ireland, UK, USA etc. No "indigene" of those lands
has been heard making such threatening low life statements against the election of any such Yoruba officials.
They were just glad to receive the offered service, as the elected officials tenure MUST expire sometime.
So the paranoia is not justified, the token Igbo appointments in LSG are commendable but do not equate to
an Igbo dominance in Lagos (whatever that means).

The fact that 2 Igbos and Urhobo won HOR seats in Lagos is a testimony to the multi-ethnic nature of Lagos.
And that reality is not going away because, you know "its our land and we are indigenes".
Tinubu was reportedly at Aguda chiding the Yoruba council members for losing to non-indigenes.
Sir, the CHANGE you preached, campaigned and spent billions on is finally manifesting in your courtyard
and you're complaining? Get real.

The Igbos are heavily invested in Lagos, much so to the clear detriment of the SE.
The business minded Yoruba land owners have used the Igbos and other ethnic groups to clear away the
forests and swamps of Agege, Iju, Mowe, Ibafo, Lekki and environs.
Did they forcefully take these lands? Are they not paying land use charges?
Are Igbos and Igbo run businesses not generating TAX revenue for Lagos state?
What's the hate for?
I will not bother to remind Akiolu that non-Yoruba and Yoruba lagosians are FREE to exercise their conscience.
They should be persuaded to vote in the better candidate not threatened.
No amount of initimidation or threats will change that.

And he should be reminded that nobody has a monopoly on political mischief.
Some mischevious Lagos PDP stalwarts could actually convince the GEJ govt to call off the
coming elections in Lagos until the good Oba and his indigenous party give conclusive proof that
the lives and properties of Igbos and other ethnic groups in Lagos are not liable to danger by lagoon in
7 days time. That's enough time for Agbaje to ride on the crest of the uproar and solidify his position against
Oba's "selected" candidate. Abi is it not the same counted votes that brought in Buhari that will bring
in the next LSG governor?

I think its sad that Igbos routinely get threatened and bulled by other groups brazenly.
I think the Igbos should start thinking seriously of their game plan in today's Nigeria.
Raised this issue way back in 2013. Here https://www.nairaland.com/1464589/way-forward-ndi-igbo-nigeria
Cash and carry politics does not yield long term benefits when you do not have a political agenda
and a home base. A word is enough for the wise.

The Oba of Lagos has made his position on the Lagos gubernatorial election loud and clear. He has communicated that the gods, the ancestors, the palace, the elders and the people of the land have chosen Ambode and any sabotage will be a call to chaos. Simple as ABC!
I have noticed noise making and tantrum throwing by igbos in reaction to his clear message and I just want to tell y'all that anybody that is not comfortable with the choice of the people of the land can go back to his village.
Don't come and tell us that you control the economy of Lagos because economies are not controlled by selling spare parts, substandard phone accessories and fake drugs. Dangote's investment alone superceeds all Igbo businesses in Lagos and to be very clear , you all constitute a burden to Lagos as you put unnecessary pressure on its social amenities and physical infrastructures without contributing anything meaningful.
Once again, if you are not comfortable with the Oba's instruction, enter the next bus to Aba!!!

The Oba have successfully destroyed the unity in Lagos. This is a challenge and the Igbos i know won't keep quiet on this.

Typical tribalistic diatribe.
The Federal Government spent quite a sum in training Akiolu as a commissioned police officer all through his years of service.
Lagos state government receives an allocation from the FG every month for paying Yoruba and non-Yoruba salaries, running Lagos state
for Yoruba and on-Yoruba citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
It was not your gods, ancestors, the palace, the elders and people of the land who do produce those needed funds
Get that into ya thick head!

Until you can tender conclusive proof of Igbos in THE REAL WORLD...not in cyberspace claiming to "own" lagos and laying claim to any
part of the SW as their property, I suggest you cool off a bit. You routinely exchange taunts online with them and they reply in the same
coin...why get all worked up by the comments?
Are you telling me you are "supporting" the Oba's wonder speech because these Igbo friends of yours "come and tell us that you control the economy of Lagos because economies are not controlled by selling spare parts, substandard phone accessories and fake drugs"? And where are Igbos on record saying that?

For the record, Igbos and other non-Yorubas are not "migrants", "settlers" or "asylum seekers" in Lagos or anywhere in Nigerian for that matter.
If you and the good Oba are not comfortable with that, you can always exercise a referendum to secede from the Federation like NOW!
Oh wait...Tinubu might not want to hear that cos...you know na grin

Sorry but you did not make any sense.
Lagos PDP led by Yorubas fielded Agbaje as a candidate.
Lagos APC led by Yorubas fielded Ambode as a candidate.
Oba is even on record saying Agbaje is his blood relative and he the Oba has told Agbaje in clear words that he
cannot be the governor for now. Cos you know..He's the Oba and Lagos is a sovereign country and the host community interest favours
Ambode.
Where exactly do the Igbos out of all the 250 ethnic groups represented in Lagos come into the picture?
And where is this your phantom gang up?
Both parties are campaigning for individual votes from both Yoruba and non-Yoruba voters.
Where is the gang up?

You appear to be living ignorance of the FACT that you live in a country of diverse ethnic groups.
Lagos is not the "property" of Akiolu while Nigeria remains a country.
Non-Yorubas cant leave "his" city because they dont like what he has spoken.
Mr Rilwan Akiolu is a fellow citizen of the Federal Republic just like all Igbos.
He has one vote just like any other eligible voter who voted in APC.
What if Jonathan had been captured threatening all the SW governors and Obas after this spending spree
campaign in the SW warning them of the consequences of not voting him in and asking them to leave his country if they dont
like his govt huh?

And I'm sure that money is generated solely from Yorubas and Yoruba-owned businesses, using Yoruba built infrastructure, secured and protected by Yoruba army, navy, airforce and police force. Attracted by Yoruba negotiated international trade agreements with foreign countries by Yoruba ambassadors employed by the Yoruba Lagos state government owned and ruled by its sovereign head Oba Akiolu.

And for the record...for those accusing Igbos of hating
I seriously don't get it undecided
Jimi Agbaje is a Yoruba man...not related to Igbo even remotely by birth, marriage...a blood relative of the Oba according to him
His candidacy was endorsed and promoted by Lagos PDP...where the Igbos have little or no active representation
Now the Igbos are receiving all the flack for choosing one of two candidates presented by Yorubas in Yoruba dominated parties!
So much to the extent of the Oba making all those unguarded statements!
If it were in saner climes...more decisive political actions would have been taken to seat and unseat some political appointments...
which as it turns out...the Eleko is just one of many political appointments!
Why hate on the Igbos for voting a Yoruba man? Did the Igbos field him?
Is there a law that bans Jimi Agbaje for canvassing for votes from Igbos or non-Yorubas in Lagos?
Are the Igbos expected to turn a blind eye to Jimi's campaign and then embrace Ambode wholeheartedly?
Why the reverse-psychology play on Igbos...accusing them of hate?
What has Jimi done to Yorubas to deserve this level of hatred(yes..no one is talking about it)?
Do you guys hate Jimi that much?
Do the Igbos have a choice in this election? Are they Nigerian citizens?
What's all this talk about "hosting", "accomodation" and the likes?
Have the Igbos ever picked up arms against Yorubas anywhere in the SW?
Where did all this accusations of "no man's land" originate from?
The Igbos that are scrambling for a piece of lagos swamps and forests at high premium prices are they getting it for free?
Do the Yorubas contribute to build houses for Igbos on the same lands they sold to them?
Do the Yorubas want a referendum to quit the federation so they can get rid of the pesky Igbos once and for all?
You know...its getting ridiculous!
And the Igbos are not even helping their cause...no political calculations...no agenda...no alliances
Just plain setting themselves up to be victimized at every turn...haba!
I could go on...
