Banking Career + Masters Pursuit In Abuja, How Tenable? by Kockane(m): 5:55pm On Jun 21, 2015
Hello everyone,

Please I need your advise. I'm at wits end as to how to successfully combine my career as a banker, which takes almost all of my time, with pursuit of a master's degree.

I am 27, a graduate of Anatomy, 2.2 from a Federal University, with about 2 years banking experience. I recently got promoted to the level of an Assistant Banking Officer (ABO) in one of the top Banks in the country. Take home pay is about 330k/month so I'm fairly comfortable. I'm still single and ain't looking to marry within the next two-three years so I believe I have time to wrap up my masters degree before taking the big step.

I'm looking to further my education, concurrently with my work, no passion for the sciences anymore, so I'm looking at an MBA. I've heard a lot of talk about online programs but I've come to realise they are either overly expensive or the cheap ones have little or no recognition in the labour market. I've tried the distance learning in one of the universities in the southeast but couldn't keep up due to time constraint, had to drop out cuz I missed a couple of tests and exams. I've also considered the National Open Uni but honestly speaking, I'd rather pursue my dreams at an institution with more pedigree (no offense intended).

Pls, I'd appreciate if there are any MBA programs that are cheap and flexible for working class individuals like myself based in Abuja who have a tight schedule. Thanks everyone.

▲▲▲ Its doable bro. I have friends in the banking sector who have completed their MBA programmes and some are still on it.

Since you are in Abuja, why not consider running a part time Masters programme at the University of Abuja though i think there pg forms is no longer on sale. You should find out.

You have written a "mini-biography" here bro...is this a subtle advert? cheesy

On a serious note, I think it is very possible. Did my MBA on a part-time basis too.

Uboma has spoken well...act on his recommendation.

It's actually difficult but it's do-able. First of all, I will like you to discuss the matter with your boss in the office and solicit for his support. I believe each organization has policy on staff training and development. See how you can align your goal with that of your establishment. With the new promotion, the bank will definitely expect more from you. So, this is not the time to lag behind in your work schedules. Possibly, if you can postpone the Masters degree till the time your organization can allow you. Delay does not mean denial. But I am talking about the reality of things now. You can also re-arrange your priority. You can consider going into marriage as two good head are always better than one. If you have a good wife, you will discover that some of the things that take your time can be handled by your wife.
You are very ambitious and I like you for that. But please, do the right thing at the right time so that the ones that are already good will not be jeopardized. Prioritization and right timing will make a difference. Wishing the best!

the only thing I saw is ABO earning 330k/mth
Abi is ABO no more the level after ET? embarassed
What do BOs and SBOs now earn in that your bank? Guy fear God ooo grin
We are interested in that your bank o.
Make everybody submit application there.

Anyway, so many people have combined both and are still combining it.
The trick is getting a school close to your residence, someone would give you notes and assignments. If you have developed a good relationship with your boss, granting you permission to write exams wouldn't be a hard nut to crack.

You might not gain the necessary knowledge, you would just have a 'Masters'. wink

If you are doing the MBA for the sole purpose of acquiring knowledge, please do it at LBS or a good foreign school online. Either of these options will be 'expensive' but you will get value for money. However, if you are just doing it for the certificate (e.g. for promotion at work), any of the cheap options will do. Moreover, you will be surprised that the educational quality of the Open University programmes is better than what is obtainable most conventional schools in Nigeria.

Abuja is a good place to live apart from high cost of living...But doing your masters in University of Abuja is what i cannot recommend...they are so disorganized and can get u frustrated...you can look at adjoining states like Nasarrawa State University or ABU, Zaria if you dont mind..

Which area of Banking? Marketing? TROPS? ICU? Operations? Whatever! It's doable! Masters, PGD, professional Examinations... Then PHD. Get on with it! I did my masters regular, but luckily enough, my lectures were Fridays and Saturdays. I did a PG program, which was mostly weekends and in between I dealt with CIBN which is still ongoing. Now, it's PHD. It has been exceptionally tough, but it's doable. Trust me.
