DOG Tips:how To Successfully Raise A Dog In A Rented Apartment With Many Tenants by arcbay(m): 12:36pm On Sep 24, 2015
Hello fellow dog lovers. A number of questions have been flying around for sometime now, a number of problems have also sprung up over the years due to owing and raising dogs within a rented apartment with many neighbours, blocks of flats, estates, shared compound, etc

I feel we should use this medium to teach one another how to be a responsible dog owner. As the saying goes..."there is no bad dog, but bad owners"

I feel i should help in the little way i can and i also implore all experts in the house, dog lovers and owners alike to please share their views and contribute their quota.

Before now, in my younger years, i raised several generation of dogs within a rented apartment with neighbours from several cultures with several beliefs, without any complaints or problems from them, not because my neighbours were so accommodating, but because i understood the trick behind it and i could play my games right.

It has always worked for me, it worked for others over the years. if it hasn't or isn't working for you, you need to check yourself, check your methods and strategies, and maybe u need to borrow from the strategies in here.

Raising a dog in such environments with many tenants involves 3 Golden Rules:

1. Understand your neighbours. Human beings fall into 3 categories with respect to their preference for dogs. They are the dog lovers, those that hate dogs or freak out at the sight of dogs and those that are indifferent about dogs.

2. Understand your dog. Build a chemistry with your dog, understand his boundaries and limits, know his limits and limitations, unravel his strengths and weaknesses, and try to work on suck weaknesses.

3. Understand yourself. If you can match step 1 with step 2, and logically create a balance between both steps, then you can successfully raise your dog in such a compound. You need to work on yourself as a better dog owner and not for monetary benefits u might accrue on the dog.

For those that wanna venture into dog ownership without any prior experience, it is best your choice of breed depends on Step 1. Your choice of breed to buy should depend on the preference of your neighbours. If your neighbours are dog lovers, then you can get buy and raise any breed. If your neighbours fall into the category of those who hate dogs or easily freak out at the sight of dogs, then a pet breed will be advisable, Probably a lhasa apso, samoyed, chihuahua, maltese, etc. Getting a pet breed will change your perception about dogs. I once raised a maltese and even the alhaji in my compound then would stop to say hi to her before he leaves for work every morning, neglecting their religious beliefs about dogs.

Having done all these, u need to consider Shelter and Feeding for your dog, where he would live and this is also dependent majorly on Step 1 and partly on Step 2.

Shelter for your dog involves one of 2 ways, either he stays within the House or outside the House.

Depending on your choice, staying within the house involves you potty-train him, a method i posted on a thread this morning. If you understand your dog, there's a way you can house-train him not to mess up the house, he only does his poo thingy when u let him out. I know quite a number of people who currently use this method. Smileysmiles is a living witness to this method.

If you choose to make your dog stay outside the House, you don't necessarily need to lock him up in a cage at all times, that's kind of inhumane. By doing so, you will only end up breeding a beast. Locking up a dog brings out the aggression in them, they feel they are bred to be security dogs and considering the fact that you live with many tenants, if you accidentally let out your dog and it sees one of the tenants, trouble ensues. That's the situation of the recent case of 2 dogs that tore through a kid's skull in Igando part of lagos recently. My advice is this, if some circumstances can't permit you to allow ur dog stay indoors, you can get a perimeter fence and locate it somewhere within your compound and locate the dog's cage within the perimeter fence with the door always open. A perimeter fence are these wired netted fences that are used in local shops to secure the outer part of shops. You can get something of that sort with a size of like 12 by 8 within the compound. Here the dog has a chance to run around the entire perimeter and has greater freedom than just being locked up in a cage like a prisoner.

Feeding also determines your dog's nature. As the saying goes, "An hungry dog is an aggressive dog". You must consider this fact alongside the fact that u wouldn't want ur hungry-angry dog to pounce on neighbours. Also the nature of feeding matters. a friend who stays in a rented apartment once told me he does "Raw feeding", Raw meat to be precise. i laughed and told him he'll end up breeding a monster out of his dog. A week later, he were both out of town on a dog prog, and his pregnant wife called to tell us the dog pounced on her and bit her when she was about to serve him food. Just imagine, a 7 months old dog o. I just thanked God it happened to his wife and not the neighbours.

Mehn, too much story jhor, please i stand to be corrected and critisized, your inputs are needed here, contribute in whatever way you can.

Let us be responsible dog owners and together we can change people's wrong and misplaced judgements about dogs. Together we can build a better canine society.

his tips also apply to students. i used to have a rott during my school days and he slept in my room verandah. the catch here is that you'll have to ensure that the dog is totally obedient to you, else you're sitting on a keg of gunpowder. you know how students are; dey can murder your dog if they get bitten and the next week, they'll invite u to go drink with them, as if nothing happened.

Yea students too...Way back in school, I went with one of my dogs. She stayed exclusively indoors and wouldn't mess up my room till I let her out. It got to a point everyone wanted to be friends with me just to get the love of my cute dog. Ladies would come to my house uninvited begging to walk my dog, gifts poured in from all corners. Lol, the sweet good old days.

Welldone arcbay. I had suggested this topic to prodeegee a while back. Your intro was quite on point. Although I must confess that at my first time of owning a beautiful gsd while I stayed in an apartment along with 9 others I was not so meticulous with my plans as you laid it out. One thing is clear though most neighbors fall into one or more of the categories you mentioned. I recall a particular neighbor of mine who was the nicest of people I've ever known but was uncompromising, due to his religious inclinations, in his hatred for my dog if for any reason they came to close proximity.
On the other hand one or two who wouldn't dare stay near whenever I took a walk with her would ask why she wasn't released for night duty along with our security guard. Dogo, our guard, would even come and tap on my door that I forgot to let her out at night. This might not be unconnected with a robbery incident in which the idiots went through the flats from one till flat seven. They left. I was in flat 9. My dog stood her ground on the front porch while they operated barking and growling for the one hour+ that the incident lasted.
Potty trained dogs are a must in these type of closed quarters. Like it was also mentioned a disciplined dog is also a no Brainer. It should be a dog that knows it's not allowed to run amock outside it's boundaries. It must not be bolting away at the clanging of the gate locks. This requires a disciplined owner too to ensure it gets its walks regularly and with enough intensity.

Well said bro, never better...I wish people could only follow these strategies. Only then can we improve the relationship between dog and man. We need to strike a balance between the two.

A time will come, when even the most aggressive pitbull will walk on the streets and people will see him as a normal dog.

It saddens me each time I walk my dogs and people freak out or pass annoying comments.

I think the key is early & continued socialization, especially for the aggressive breeds like rott, Caucasian, gsd, etc.

There's a huge gsd from the next compound that comes to play with mine. He's the most adorable guy (permit me to use that) there is. You just can't help but like him. Plays with everybody, and has no wahala whatsoever. But mine on the other hand doesn't like to see new faces, and I know its as a result of isolation, although I tried as much as I could to socialize him early on. But he just has a mind of his own, which is another thing to consider when picking a pup from a litter. Watch them closely and you'll have an idea of what each is likely to turn out by observing their character trait.

A multi-tenanted house is no good place to raise certain breeds due to the numerous restrictions you'll have to subject the dog to. But its doable if you're willing to let your dog live with you in the house.

Like you said, and which I agree with, socialisation is the key.

Your dog is what you train him to be. Even the most aggressive breed could be bred as a pet if you know the tricks...

I've seen a lot of friendly and accommodating pitbulls as I've also seen some pet breeds who are as aggressive as hell itself, it all depends on the owner.

You're correct. I'm always a fan of people who share based on personal experiences and not what they read on the internet from oyibo people. This is my idea of what the pet section ought to be like. Seun should add a sub-forum for "buy & sell" ads so we can have this place for important discussions like this one.

Thanks alot bro, nice writeup.

My question is about training, in one of prodeegees post on sunday about flogging, i made a comment buh no one said anything about it.
The thing is dat the said dog plays alot, everytime is a play time, the dog enjoys playing with me more than the owner and he never gets tired, with this no time to learn cos its always play, wont keep quite to learn, keeps quite when he sees the owners cane, when i get mine its play time (have not flogged once o)

My question how is it possible to train such dogs to keep calm and listen and also learn?

@ op,
what is the most practicable dog breed for a first timer in nigeria?
online says golden retriever but seems a rare breed in nigeria.
relatively easy to train and can be trusted around kids while not those toy looking fashion kind of dogs.
thanks

For a starter, I'll advice you start with a toy breed. Toy breeds like the lhasa are well known for their low maintenance. They don't eat much, don't poo or pee much, they're trainable, good around kids and can be successfully bred indoors.

It's better u start with a toy breed, after sometime you can get a heavier breed...

Do not see dog training as a do or die affair, training is a continuous thing. You don't expect to teach a dog a new trick in one day and expect him to hear. You need to be consistent with ur methods.

If your dog is playful, that doesn't mean he can't learn. The truth is that a happier dog assimilates faster than sad and nd dejected one.

Whatever trick you want to teach him or whatever commands, just keep teaching him with the hope that he's learning and I promise you in due time he will catch up.
Re: DOG Tips:how To Successfully Raise A Dog In A Rented Apartment With Many Tenants by kolokolobi(m): 8:00am On Sep 26, 2015
You need to help the dog understand that you will only show attention when it's calm. I've had a very playful dog before but I also learnt not to reward it with a hug pat or even eye contact which it's seeking until it's calm. I even reward it with a treat when it finally gets it that I want her to sit and wait for my instructions. In time it got the message and when it comes along tail wagging like a flag in full sail it takes a sit position in no time to know what's up.
Like mentioned above it takes consistency and repeats to align with the expected. That's where you as leader come in. You must show you know what and how in a consistent firm manner. I remember when I tried to teach it that it goes for its food on my command. It sat at other end of room and I moved over about 10...12 feet away. Initially it would come at the food in no time. Then it would wait longer and take a step or two after a few minutes each. But I would return it to the starting position each time to start the exercise all over. In a few weeks of constantly reinforce the expected behaviour it would sit at the designated position and wait for an hour or more until it got the command to finally come. Two things it finally got. Come to the food when I want you to. Secondly I'm entitled to my space. Mutual respect.
So I can have me time in front of the TV or over a pile of papers and it is content to sit quietly a few feet away until told to do something else. Mind you it is up to listen to any strange sound around and about in an alert manner.

Not really ideal, you're right. But in the case of a dog lover who needs a dog, would he stay away from owning dogs just because he doesn't have a house of his own? Hell No, there are ways around it, and that's why we built this thread.

thanks,
however not that alien to dogs, just not a fan,
my family though loved them so they are the main factor for getting one
since I will not be around all time, want one that I can trust my kids around. compound big enough to play and train one in
the cost of maintenance not an issue by God's grace.
the toy likes are however a no no for me,
feeling of providing sort of security another reason for getting one which the toy like ones would not provide.
feels I may not be able to train a Caucasian or GSD adequately as a first time full time dog owner.
NEW QUESTION:
what are the top 'tropicalised' breeds around?

Closest breed with all these qualities would be a GSD, good with kids, highly trainable, guard instincts, fair temperament...these are common qualities of a good GSD but u should be aware there are certain rare cases where u might end up with an overly aggressive dog, here u need to develop strategies for handling, iron hand, reward and punishment etc...

I wouldn't advice a Caucasian for a newbie...cos caucs require much more...

being a dog owner in a rented apartment, i live on the 2nd floor with 5 other tenants

your best bet is to get the dog at puppy stage if you want to keep a large breed.
bringing in a huge dog with a fierce bark will likely kick-start serious beef from day 1.

be prepared to welcome un-realistic demands like "cant you put the dog in your room? she cries at night at the balcony", note that is you balcony they are complaining about.
what i do is give them an un-realistic promise that i am going to try it out

I have an elderly neighbor who usually have a hard time getting sleep likely cos of the old age.
if he isn't talking about my dog today, it will be my generator vibrating the whole building.

i simply apologize and enter my flat, and this works as he seem to have adapted.

For large breeds, you must NOT be the lazy or easily irritated person, FYI dog wastes stinks as much as humans
and most times bulkier than ours, so you must be ready to pack it twice a day.
If your dog understands how to communicate it, good for you then, be ready to walk her out each time you get the message.

Failure to decode the message on time can leave you a big mess and a sorry looking dog.

if you own a GSD, and you have a rugged apartment, be well prepared to sweep twice daily as they shed hairs like pregnant rabbits
if your apartment is tiled, good for you as it is easier to sweep.

Just because your dog hasn't eaten your laptop cables, or leather couch does not mean there is a god watching over them, she is just not bored to that point yet, she will eat them someday
mine will 'shoplift' everything ranging from yams in the kitchen to my designer boxers to the balcony for some chewing and tugging.
beating after the deeds just dont work because they wont get the message and will happily repeat it

Extras:
Just like the americans believe it is abuse when you beat your child, they also believe it is abuse when you beat your dog.
follow their lifestyle at your risk.

When i shout "hey", my dog stops whatever she is doing and reports to base (balcony)
failure to do so could get me angry, she does not like it when am angry.

family members and visitors, most times love the dog because she is super friendly.
at first during puppy stage it was easy removing the waste with tissue, occasionally, my hand will touch it and i will cringe.
with time, trust me, you will get over it.
i later figured it is less demanding using the broom and packer to sweep both.

i will recommend hypo over dettol anyday because it is cheaper and neutralizes the odor.
just perforate the hypo lid and spray it on the waste before packing.
you will be glad you did.

i bathe her every 2 or 3 weeks

am currently working on getting her to use a reserved field outside my compound but she is yet to even bend down there talk less of giving her praises for doing so.
even after eating heavily, she will hold it till she is able to get back in and use the balcony.

@arcbay

The dog didn't bite the guy's wife cos they fed it raw meat. The dog bit her cos she was afraid simply cos she wasn't used to feeding the dog, a thing the dog sensed and moved to attack her.

Dogs attack when they are afraid, sense fear in a person or during danger, not cos of the kind of food they eat. If raw meat was the reason she was attacked by the dog, why did the dog stop at just bite instead of munching her flesh?

Raw meat is better than kibbles which contain chemicals used as preservatives. These chemicals can be cancerous. Most vets will vote against raw meat cos they know it will prevent their income due to the dog growing healthy from raw feeding. An healthy dog equals no visits to vet hospitals.

@ op,
what is the most practicable dog breed for a first timer in nigeria?
online says golden retriever but seems a rare breed in nigeria.
relatively easy to train and can be trusted around kids while not those toy looking fashion kind of dogs.
thanks
Get a GSD, and read all you can online. Also watch some youtube videos. You'll learn.

I'm aware of the advantages of raw feeding, but I wouldn't advice it for a newbie. If u don't get it right, it poses danger to canines.

Moreover, most people interprete Raw Feeding to mean feeding dogs on raw meat alone. This viewpoint has caused many problems in recent times.

@Sledjama
Thanks for ur post especially ur extra point
I'm just like U, two caucasian on the second floor, not even a rented apartment but the coy quarters but never a single confrontation, though I hear the complains from gossips and packing shait is a norm.
I allow them roam the house and they have their poo spot, omo their urine can rust german floor(for itks I know the floor is no metal but it makes it look rusty)
I broke all rules of gettin a CO as a newbie and I've had no regrets whatsoever but I jog every morning to exercise them and myself and it saves me one poo packing

Yea bro, that's another method...if you develop an habit of walking ur dogs every morning and making it an habit, they will also develop the habit of holding themselves thru the night and poo during the walk, thereby saving u the stress of poo-packing in the morning.
