Bryan and Kathleen live 150miles apart. They each drive towards the other's house along a straight road connecting the two. Bryan drives @ a constant rate of 30M/hr and kath drives @ 50 M/hr. If Bryan and kath leave dia houses @ d same time, how many miles are they from bryans house when they meet?
Re: You Can't Solve This Maths Question by yusaasif(m): 2:18pm On Sep 28, 2015

i know this is more of physics than maths. velocity. speed. distance and time must come into play

Actually is a mathematics question ,simple algebra
(and Logic)
Distance = Speed X Time

When they meet they would both have been travelling for the same time T and the distance covered by both of them would be 150

So

150 = 30T + 50T
= 80T
they will meet after 150/80T
=1.875 hours

Brian would have travelled
1.875 X 30 km =56.25 km
while Kath would have travelled
1.875 x 50 m
= 93.75 km

93.75 + 56.25 = 150

So they will be 56.25 from Brian's and 93.75 from Kath's

This is a JSS question

60 mins = 1hr
therefore
kath drives @ 50 miles in 60 mins
while Bryan drive @ 30 mins in 60 mins
kath and Bryan will drive for 1hr 52 mins and 30 secs and the distance from BRYAN'S HOUSE will be 56.25 miles when they both meet.
Kath will cover 93.75 miles and Bryan will cover 56.25 miles.

THEN I SCROLLED DOWN TO FIND YOUR METICULOUS WORK.

BRAVO. THOUGH A SIMPLE ONE FOR AVERAGE SCIENCE STUDENT.

YOUR UNIT ALSO CHANGED FROM MILES TO KILOMETRES

You are implying they are moving at the same time T in your first equation.

Even though the distance travelled by each would vary, but the two must meet at the same time elapsed. After all, both left home at the same time.

The distance has been stated in d question
....150miles QED since the question is incomplete and not stating where the distance shld be measured. Is it from point C (final distance) or from the initial distance.
We just ve to assume dat the distance still remain at same place at time 0s moving at the same constand velocity
