You people saying senator is better than minister are just being academic. Many senators have left their seat when asked to come and be minister, tell me one minister that resigned to go and contest as senators.

Yes, senators screen ministers, but do you know that after the screening senators become beggars in the offices of the minister looking for one favour or the other.

Taking cognizance of Nigerian factor a minister is by far better than senator. However senators are powerful with no influence as ministers

the are both powerless without their ministries and the influence it wields. They are just ordinary Nigerians without their ministries.
We know. And we ask, within each "household" and considering what each does and capable of doing as an individual, who is more influential and more powerful?

By now, you're sure of the answer. You don't have to say it out. Lol grin

CACAWA:
no you don't.

You are still talking about the senate as a body. We are talking about a single senator. For example, the senators from rivers state alone have no power over Amaechi today. They couldn't even stop his nomination and they also can never remove him.

Even the senate you are talking about...for example, the senate has power to confirm an INEC chairman, they have no powers to remove him.

Same rule applies to ministers...but in this case, only the president can fire a minister.
Ask yourself...what did the senate do about for aviation minister...stella odua?

They advised the president to fire her. He didn't.

That's all the senate can do...talkies of one single senator that no can't get majority of his colleagues. Lol
You still have a lot to learn sir. The Nigeria scenario is affecting your thinking too much and some others nairalanders. Thinking out of Nigeria and read constitution again sir. In a Sane society,it is not debatable about who has power between a senator and an ordinary minister( Secretary of department as it is being called in USA).

It seems you're a senator or aspiring to be one.

Look at it this way again:
A senator may never have the opportunity of meeting foreign important figures. A minister on the other hand will have to be very docile not to meet many international figures throughout his/her tenure.

There are too many reasons why a minister is far more influential than a senator who may sit like a lame duck throughout his term.

Nigerian former minister of defence is in the current senate sir. He was equally two terms governor of kano state. Also, Sen. David Mark was a former military governor and minister. Among other examples sir.

It means that an average nairalander is of average intelligence and exposure. The question is a senator and an ordinary minister (not limiting to Nigeria alone). For any sane person to have argued for the latter, he or she ought to have known that it is so because of "Nigeria factor".

undecided who is even asking this type of question, (science student I believe)
Well, the three arms of government, consists of The Executive, The legislature and The judiciary. None of them has Supreme powers, they checkmate each other in order to make sure, the Constitution which is the only Supreme thing is not breached.
_ A ministry is just a mere branch of the executive, he uses his ministers to work, they're the president's employees grin

Ministers have the president's Authority, while Senators have constitutional powers. (oya check btw power and Authority which one pass).
Senators are law makers of this country, for me, I think they're the power house of a government, they make and amend the Constitution which the judiciary interpret. You all know they can impeach the president too.
#IRespectMyLegisators they run this county jaree.

The power of the senate lies in the group and not a single person. A single senator is powerless
a single person can move a motion and get the support of his colleagues thereby making him powerful, but the ministers cant do that...they"ll be summoned, and of course its one person that"ll always moved the motion and get support from his colleagues..

I personally think that an elected senator is more powerful than an appointed minister(with all things being equal) but also I figured out that here in Nigeria, things are somehow different with regards to a minister having more than one portfolios.
Please fellow nairalanders who do you think Is more powerful

But you have forgotten that senators confirmation of ministers means they voted for them, thereby transforming them to position above themselves.

Comparing A Minister & Senator As An Individual.
The minister can be more influential than d senator to d populace and country at large due to d size of thr responsibilities. A senator on d other hand will be more powerful 1stly becos he rest on d election by d people and can hardly b removed witout legal process. He can also exercise his power over a minister thru summoning. Yet a minister influence override such of an ordinary minister in affecting d ppl. Hence d reason why ppl will mostly kno about Fashola now in most states than knowing one of thr senators. And d reason u kno Diezeni more than senators from Bayelsa especially d regular ppl without flair for politics.

So Ministers Are More Influential, Senators Are More Powerful.
NOTE: I assumed a decent political environment.

sir why do u think that the governors that has completed their 8 years tenure struggle for the senatorial seats that is because senators are powerful both financially and otherwise....maybe in other countries ministers may be more powerful but so far as naija is concerned a senator will always have an upper hand than a minister
Re: Who Is More Powerful...a Minister And A Senator??? by Nobody: 5:32pm On Nov 28, 2015
The OP's question is synonimous to asking who's more powerful between a house of assembly member and a commissioner. In my opinion which I believe is the reality,a senator is more power than a minister with these reasons:

1.A senator is an elected representative of a constituent, while a minister is an appointee.
2.The ministers are screened by the senators while the senators attain their positions based on the people's mandate.
3.A minister can be sacked by the president (an individual),while a senator can be recalled by his constituent (his people)
4.A senator has a chance of becoming a President when the President is impeached or dies, but a minister can never become a President in that dispensation.
5.A Senator can summon a minister,while a minister can't summon a senator.
6.Senators make the laws, while ministers abide by the already made laws.

With these few points of mine,I hope I've been able to convince the OP that a senator is more powerful than a minister.
Please clap for me.

Don't confuse it with impactful
Sweetguy25:
When you say powerful, what exactly do you mean? Some Ministers have the power and authority to set policies and programmes that may have overreaching effects on our socioeconomic and political life. Okonjo Iweala was more powerful than any senator during her time. Same with Diezani. A CBN governor is not elected but he's more powerful than the senate president.

Of course the minister wields his powers in the 'senate' just like the minister wield her power in her 'ministry'. You can't talk about a senator without involving the senate.

Forget the rascality we are practicing in Nigeria. The senate has the power to summon anyone, even the president.

Do the fact that the Senate can summon the president, does that make a senator more powerful than the president?? NO...

Yes a minister can be summoned by the Senate, but not by a senator
