President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged by Ijaw-elders to only go after militants behind the recent attacks within the Niger-Delta.
The elders on Friday, January 22 told President Buhari, to clamp down on vandals on destroying major oil and gas pipelines in the Niger Delta region.
The leaders under the aegis of Bayelsa Elders Council (BEC) said Buhari should direct the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to justice under the rule of law.
At a crucial meeting in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital, to review the state of the nation with particular attention to the rising attacks on oil and gas installations, the elders appealed to Buhari to prevent security operatives from destroying innocent communities under the guise of fishing out pipeline vandals.
Some of the Ijaw elders present at the meeting were HRM Joshua Igbagara, Ibenanaowei of Oyiakiri clan; HRM Jonathan Kubor, Ibenanaowei of Bassan clan and HRH King Richard Seibarugu, Ibedaowei of Okordia kingdom.
Also present at the meeting were Chief A.M. Aduba, Deputy chairman, Rev. (Mrs.) Jane Alek, Amba Ambaowei, Dr Hellen Opigo, Austin Lugbenwei and Chief Dennis Daunemugha, among others.
They, however, called on the perpetrators to desist from further attacks on pipelines to avoid further damaging the economy of the state and the country in view of continuous fall of crude oil price.
The communiqué was signed by BEC’s Chairman, Chief Francis Doukpola and Publicity Secretary, Chief Thompson Okorotie.
The elders also asked the federal government to exercise caution while making statements on the matter and to consult widely before making decisions on issues affecting the amnesty programme.
They urged the federal government to apply the carrot and stick approach by negotiating with the host communities to bring about sustainable solutions to the problem

Why do I love these people? I mean, the Ijaws, Itsekiris, Urhobos mostly behave nationalistic just as the Yorubas.

It's same with the Hausas and Fulanis, Igbiras, Jukuns, Binis and many other tribes. Hence you don't see any of them cry of witch hunting or supporting any bad egg amongst them such as Dasuki, Bafarawa, Yuguda, Dokpesi, Falae, Fani Kayode and so on.

The same cannot be said of a certain tribe across the Niger though. It is the reason they always think every other tribe is against them. They're permanently playing the victim card. What a people!

This is the word of Sapele Olofofo, Peace be upon his servant!
[And those who has decided to go back to the creeks and mangroves of Niger Delta to resume the
armed struggle and hostilities; should know that President Buhari has enough shoes to match them unlike Jonathan
who has no shoes.

Niger Delta will not boil, Tompolo should do the needful by making himself available for interrogation, if he is clean he would be left alone..

There is a huge difference between these people and the people from 'the land of the lying sun'. For the first time i believe they have virtually nothing in common especially when it comes to decision making yet they want to lump themselves with the ijaws. Kudos to these elders for their patriotic roles...... Same cant be said of the others.

Our Elders have spoken wisely. The government should bring perpetrators to book but must be cautious not to make the innocent pay for the sins of the wicked.

PS: I'm glad that people are coming to terms with the Ijawman's position on this subject.

Don't even bring your bigotry on this one.

They are our misguided brothers
And an attack on the militants is an attack on the south

Now you APC guys are praising Ijaws for wanting their own hanged but the north shielded theirs during GEJ tenure

Una hypocrisy stinks

Trying to justify the Mass stupidity of the flat-heads from erosion ravaged Land.

Arewa Elders represent North ,buhari is a single personality his opinions is not binding on all the elders of the North compare to millitancy issue.

The Elders of ijaw have the final say and it is binding on all ijaws .
Not opinion from asari or tompolo ,cos there view doesn't represent the whole ijaw land

All of a sudden Buhari is no longer an elder. Ok he's a youth
Now remind me what your elders said

Buhari is an Elder but his opinion is not binding on all elders of the North. The northern elders determine the fate of their people not buhari

Why did Asari Dokubo not build his university in the South, why did he situate it in Benin Republique?

When the NA start clamping down on criminals in the creeks, I dare you to go face them
