AF Nigeria 2017 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers Watford
AFCON ouster: Nigeria loss, Premier League gain

Kelechi Iheanacho of Manchester City

Nigeria fans will not be cheering the Super Eagles at Gabon 2017, but the fans of the English Premier League clubs of some of the country’s top stars will now be excited the players will be available for their darling clubs next January.

The English clubs are known to be opposed to the timing of the AFCON as it always deprives them of the services of these players who are away for several weeks at a time the league is negotiating a crucial stage.

MIKEL OBI: Chelsea will have the Super Eagles captain during the AFCON next year after he emerged as a key player for ‘The Blues’ under interim manager Guus Hiddink.

KELECHI IHEANACHO:The Nigeria youngster has been revelation for coach Manuel Pellegrini's Manchester City in the EPL as well as the cup games. By January, he would have done enough to impress new manager Pep Guardiola.

VICTOR MOSES: Whether he is back at Chelsea, stays put on West Ham United or he is again loaned out to another club, Victor Moses will not be away with the Super Eagles at the AFCON. He has shone at ‘The Hammers’ this season to probably make a case from him to get his break at Stamford Bridge in the coming season under a new boss.

ODION IGHALO:The Watford striker may not have it big with the national team, but he is the leading scorer of his team and one of the top scorers in the EPL this season having scored 15 goals in the league. He is very important to the team as they aim to retain their premiership status and also be a factor in January 2017 should he finally move to a bigger club most likely in the Premier League.

Amuzie: I picked up an ankle injury against Egypt
By Olakunle Brown

New Super Eagles left-back Stanley Amuzie has revealed that a knock to his ankle was responsible for his substitution against Egypt before apologizing to Nigerian fans following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2017 African Cup of Nations.

The Samson Siasia led side lost 1-0 to the Pharaohs of Egypt courtesy a lone strike by Ramadhan Sobhy which effectively ruled Nigeria out of the biennial tournament for the second consecutive time.

The Olhanense of Portugal defender was replaced at half-time by Elderson Echiejile and many thought it was for tactical reasons but he has revealed that his substitution was due to a knock he picked up during the first half of the game.

“I was substituted during the game at half-time due to a little knock on my ankle,” he wrote on his official Facebook page. “We wished the result could’ve turned out differently but God knows best. We are so sorry and promise to get it right again.”

He added: “I thank you all for the support and prayers even though we didn’t qualify. We are sorry and looking up to a bigger one ahead.”

Group G was left with three teams after Chad withdrew and the victory of Egypt over the Super Eagles gave them the sole ticket in Group G over Nigeria and Tanzania.

Exclusive: Chelsea Star Mikel Reacts To Reports He Demanded Super Eagles Captaincy From Musa

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has moved quickly to dismiss reports in the local media that he pressured Ahmed Musa and interim coach of the Super Eagles Samson Siasia to be appointed skipper of the national team.

Based on the reports, Mikel had threatened not to honour the African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt if he was not given the armband.

But his representative has picked holes in the story, stressing that the player would have featured in both games prior to his appointment.

“The story is false and I don’t know what the writer wants to achieve,” Mikel’s adviser told
allnigeriasoccer.com.

“Mikel did not even know he was going to be appointed captain before he arrived the Super Eagles camp. He only came to camp based on his invitation, they are only trying to create trouble.”

Just last week, CSKA Moscow frontman Ahmed Musa revealed that he willingly gave the armband to Mikel and stated that seniority was overlooked by Sunday Oliseh when he was appointed skipper.

Coquelin Believes Alex Iwobi Will Motivate The Young Stars At Arsenal

Francis Coquelin believes Alex Iwobi’s progress at Arsenal this season will motivate up-and-coming talents at the club that they have a chance of breaking into the first team if they work hard in training.

The Nigeria international netted his first Premier League goal against Everton before the international break; few days after he made his first Champions League start against Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

“We’ve got a few who have joined in with training, such as Jeff Reine-Adelaide - he’s a big talent - and Chris Willock as well,” Coquelin told arsenal.com

“There’s a lot of talent there and for them to see Alex breaking into the first team will give them a sign that there’s a chance for young players to come through.

“What Alex has done is unbelievable. He played really well against Everton and he can help us a lot in the final push.”

Iwobi, who joined Arsenal at the age of seven, could make his 15th appearance for the first team on Saturday against Odion Ighalo’s Watford.

Victor Moses Looking Forward To Locking Horns With Crystal Palace

Victor Moses is looking forward to locking horns with his former club Crystal Palace when they visit West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Nigeria international spent his formative years as a footballer with the academy team of Crystal Palace before he was promoted to their first team at the age of 16.

Moses has since played for Wigan Athletic, Chelsea, Liverpool, Stoke City and West Ham since his departure from The Eagles in January 2010.

“The most important thing now is that I am a West Ham player and we just need to concentrate on making sure we get the three points, ” Moses told West Ham’s official webpage.

“We are looking good in training and we need to keep doing what we are good at.”
The 25-year-old added : “Crystal Palace will want the victory on Saturday and I am sure they will be doing everything to stay in the Premier League. They will come to the Boleyn Ground and will want to express themselves.

“But we need to focus on our tactics and try to stop them as we look to come away with the victory and get into the top four.”

During his three-year spell with the first team of Crystal Palace, Moses made 69 appearances for the Londoners.

Iheanacho, Iwobi, others can lift Eagles again —
Taribo, Lawal

Garba Lawal.

By Allwell Okpi

As the Super Eagles settle down to the fact that they won’t feature in the Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, two ex-internationals, Taribo West and Garba Lawal, have said the next step should be the rebuilding of the team with young players such as Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho, Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi and KAA Gent’s Moses Simon.

After drawing 1-1 in Kaduna and losing 1-0 in Alexandria, the Eagles now have one last game with Tanzania in September, which would not matter.

West told our correspondent that the Eagles lost the AFCON ticket in the first game in Kaduna and noted that the Egyptians were not better than the Eagles in both legs but agreed that they were more aggressive and more eager to win.

“In my opinion, our boys didn’t play like they
wanted to win. They played to instruction; they were tactically good, but they also carelessly conceded goals. The Eagles didn’t do well,” he said.

“The only thing that made me happy with the team was the rebuilding. I was happy that the young players, who came into the team newly, were able to play together with the likes of Mikel Obi. If you watched the second leg, you’ll see that Mikel’s experience showed.

“At this moment, we should start talking about
rebuilding for the future. Most of our younger players that won the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in UAE and some of the U-23 players are good. We should be able to merge the two teams and get a team that will make us proud.”

“At this moment, we should start talking about
rebuilding for the future. Most of our younger players that won the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in UAE and some of the U-23 players are good. We should be able to merge the two teams and get a team that will make us proud.”

On his part, Lawal said rebuilding the Eagles with focus on the young players in the team that played against Egypt over the two legs, should be the focus.

He added that the boys tried their best in the games against Egypt but it wasn’t enough.

Lawal said, “We have to focus on preparing for
the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers coming up later this year. I believe it is going to be tougher than the AFCON qualifiers.

“Iwobi, Iheanacho, Simon and the other young
players that played those two games were fantastic.

The way they played made me confident about the future of the Eagles. The important thing now is for them to be consistent and committed. The key is being injury-free. When you are lucky to go through
your career without a major injury, then that
is great. I hope they will continue this way.

“They are young and of course they are the future of the Eagles. Playing time is also important. If you play every week, you will attain maturity quicker. I believe we should rebuild our team with these players in the
core of it. There are others we can add to them. A player like Isaac Success is good. He is playing regularly for his club, Granada, in La Liga. There are a couple of others.”

Regarding the need to inspire the young players to be more committed to the national team, West said there was the need to treat the older players well, particularly when they are about to retire.

“The way Vincent Enyeama retired was very bad. It is only in a system like Nigeria you get that. Enyeama should be retired with a lot of honour and respect. I think Samson Siasia should try and get Enyeama back and let him retire with honour, so that the younger players will see a good future in playing for the
national team,” the former Eagles defender said.

“They retired the generation of Segun Odegbami anyhow; they did it to our generation, now they are doing it to this generation. Imagine if I wasn’t a pastor, what would I have done? The system didn’t give me any future. If the present generation do not
see any future in representing Nigeria, they will not go all out to play and die for the nation.

“We do well in the age-grade competitions because the players see it as an opportunity to make a future for themselves. But when they come to play at the senior level, they will not want to risk their career because if they get injured representing Nigeria, the country will abandon them. I hope the injury Oghenekaro Etebo picked up during the Egypt game is not very bad. Because I fear that the people in the
Nigeria Football Federation may abandon him.

“Two years ago, I had to fight for Ogenyi Onazi
and Elderson Echiejile, who were injured at
the World Cup. I spoke with the then Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Gbenga Elegbeleye, and told him that he had to do something for those players. I think he eventually got the then President, Goodluck Jonathan, to call them and I think they got help somehow.”

West, however, said the Eagles defence did well against Egypt but failed to concentrate to the end and therefore conceded cheap goals.

I hope the French Coach The NFF wants to higher is not Claude Le Roy. A coach Siasia beat and dominated in a match.

Congo coach Claude Le Roy promises Siasia a tougher 2nd leg

The battle to secure a ticket to feature in the 2015 Africa U23 Championship between Nigeria U23 team and Congo's U23 team will go down to the wire as the Congolese coach Claude Le Roy has promised a tougher second leg after his team lost to Nigeria 2-1 at the Adokie Amesiamaka Stadium, Port Harcourt Rivers State.

The Nigeria U23 team dominated from start to finish but could only score just two goals and yet conceded one but former Super Eagles forward, Samson Siasia who is the Nigeria U23 team coach has admitted his team could have gotten more goals but he has since moved on and remained positive going into the second leg in a fortnight.

Chad Withdrawal: NFF Have No Case Against CAF

By Dare Esan:

The Nigeria Football Federation's claim that the Confederation of African Football changed their qualification rules for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations midway has shown that the FA are ignorant of CAF rules on the tournament, Complete Sports can report.
The NFF had last week through a media release by Ademola Olajire and posted on their website said they were considering contesting the "sudden change of rules" after the withdrawal of Chad and had already put their lawyers to work on how they can seek legal redress against CAF.
“…our legal unit is looking at the propriety of changing the rules midstream,” the statement read in part.
Complete Sports' checks however reveal otherwise.
According to Article 61 in Chapter 27 – Forfeit, Withdrawals, Refusal to Play, Replacement of CAF's Regulations of the Africa Cup of Nations: ''If a team withdraws from the qualifying phase organised in groups, all its results shall be annulled (points, scored and conceded goals)."
Complete Sports further checks also reveal that the NFF may have based their argument on a totally different Chapter of the regulation which dealt with the Final Tournament of the competition, that is the 31st edition of the Africa Cup of Nations which will be held in Gabon between January and February 2017.

Article 87 in Chapter 35 of the Regulation states thus: "If a team withdraws at the start of the Final Tournament without playing all the matches of its group, it shall be considered loser of all the remaining matches it was scheduled to play by the score of three to nil."
Therefore, as things stand, the NFF have no case against CAF and should start strategising for the 2019 qualifiers.

GUEN ACCEPTS EAGLES JOB

by Ade Ojeikere, April 02, 2016 at 12:00 am

Sportinglife can reveal exclusively today that Frenchman Paul Le Guen has tacitly accepted to coach Nigeria’s senior team, the Super Eagles in a two-year deal that is renewable based on the team’s performance.
SportingLife scooped further that the Frenchman demanded that the NFF gets him a house in Abuja where he hopes to stay and monitor the domestic league players plying their trade weekly.
Indeed, Le Guen will get a house in Lagos where he would go to watch the league matches in the two stadia in Lagos and also the games in the South South, South East and South West areas of the country.
Interestingly, SportingLife reported yesterday that NFF chieftains have offered the new helmsman a whooping 40,000 Euros monthly and that the new tactician would pay for the services of his assistant and a trainer from the monthly 40,000 euros which he has accepted to earn during his three-year tenure.

Le Guen, who was born 1 March 1964, is a French football manager and a former player. His last role was as manager of the Oman national football team, from which he was relieved in November 2015.
Interestingly, NFF chiefs have decided to allow the technical crew that prosecuted the two-legged ties against Egypt in Kaduna on March 25 and in Alexandria on March 29 in tact, given the remarkable manner in which they worked as a team for the games.
Indeed, on Tuesday, NFF hierarchy would meet with the sports minister, Solomon Dalung where the issue of Le Guen’s employment would be exhuastibly discussed, just the NFF’s plans for the Russia 2018 World Cup competition with draws of the competition slated to hold in June.
NFF men are also toying with other options principal of which is the urgent need to fill the void that would arise in the squad when Samson Siasia head for the Rio’ 2016 Olympic Games, in the event that the minister isn’t persuaded to employ a foreign coach for the Super Eagles after the Tuesday’s meeting in Abuja.
Already, the NFF have contacted renowned agents to shop for international friendly games meant to keep the Eagles busy now that the draws for the Russia 2018 World Cup would be held later in June.

If Paul Le Guen gers the job, I wish him the best. He seems bright and ready to work. I hope he gets the support from the NFF and they should allow him work.

From the look of things, he wants to scout the local League for fresh home based talents. Give him time and patience.

Red flags from Paul Le Guen's Wikipedia page.

Rennes
He resigned from Rennes in 2001 after a fall-out with the club's board. This led to him taking a year off from football.

Rangers
However, Le Guen made a poor start to his Ibrox career. His record across his first ten league games was the worst start to a season by an Old Firm debutant since John Greig's team won only two, drew six and lost two of their opening ten games in 1978–79.

On 8 November, Rangers were knocked out of the Scottish League Cup at the quarter-final stage by First Division side St Johnstone. The result, the first time Rangers had been knocked out of a cup tournament by a lower league side at home, prompted protests outside Ibrox and demands for the situation to improve.

On 1 January 2007, Rangers announced that Le Guen had stripped Barry Ferguson of his captaincy of the club and dropped him from the squad for a match the following day. BBC Sport reported that Ferguson would not play for Rangers again under Le Guen.

Murray announced on 4 January 2007 that Paul Le Guen had left Rangers by mutual consent. This made him the club's shortest-serving manager, and the only one to leave the club without completing a full season in charge.

Cameroon National Football Team

Cameroon were the first team officially knocked out of the 2010 World Cup. He announced his resignation on 24 June 2010.

Oman National Football Team

Oman were eliminated in the group stage of the tournament with one win and two losses. He was sacked on 19 November 2015 after a poor start of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.

Paul Le Guen's impressive performance from his Wikipedia page

Lyon
Le Guen replaced Jacques Santini as manager of Olympique Lyonnais in 2002 after they captured their first league title. Le Guen experienced a grim start to his managerial career at Lyon, winning only 3 games of the first 9, but eventually took Lyon to a further three consecutive championships and reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

I still believe Coach Siasia was under pressure to play some players. I still do not understand that selection until tomorrow. Just like the Coach Garba U20 selection against Germany.

Look at the case of Enyeama and Coach Oliseh falling out with Pinnick because of the Kaduna venue.

Coach Oliseh pointed out interference from people for him to play some players in the Super Eagles.

I feel there is more than meets the eye. Why bench Iheanacho when he converted the most chances in training and had two good shots in the first leg over those who had no shot on goal in the first half.

I think our problems starts with the NFF.

Give me a gun and a right and I will blast all those iidiots in the glass house! That second leg selection in Egypt buried us for good. You benched our most creative players(Iweobi,Iheanoacho,S.Moses) for Umaru and Musa in the name of attacking football...What good is your attacking football without creativity and technique. Musa and Umaru are just like Garba Lawal....so so run without ball sense. Ok,sometimes musa gets lucky when his many wasteful shots mistakenly finds its way into the net. Siasia has no balls....At least ,Olise quit because he couldn't let them destroy his reputation.fffucck NFF and Siasia!

But anyway shaa... Make dem withdraw sef. It's five groups we're gonna have meaning only group winners will make it to Russia 2018. #smiles

Meanwhile, in response to the "19-yrs old statements" you made, I'll quote Sir TheGoodJoe....

"......If you're good enough, then you're definitely old enough......"

It's not and will never be by age but by ability and the mental strength/attitude that goes with the super talents in the "kid".

I always had this argument with a forumite (he knows himself #smiles) on the U-23 thread..... It was turned into the "epic" Experience vs Young talents (youthful precociousness).

I have nothing against Experience. Experience is highly important but I detest when people make it the ultimate.

Lol. we've been hearing it for decade+ now and it's becoming one of the oldest lines used in press conferences by nig, SE coaches. Why can't they just bring all of them to camp, organize two friendlies and make these youngsters know that their performance will determine their SE future. very sure this would work on them, CO that's the dream of these lads.

Nobody is in doubt of what Omeruo can do, same for iheanacho, Success, etc. or should there be a cohesion plan separate for not generation of SE?

Sincerely, we need them for effective competition. these old babas must feel pressure on their back. though I hate to admit it, but the Three Lions kinda method of rotation is an example.

I agree with you on the interference part. these non-tactician with tyre-like bellies sit in the glass house and enforce that certain player(s) must be fielded. NFF has always been the problem. The day a former football of repute, like Odegbami, or any other gets to handle our football affairs, then il say yes, we've just started. these sportliticians don't reason like a footballer would. why? cos they sit in the via section.

same old excuse. Siasia must be a weakling.

if I were a coach, I would shun the NFF and play who I please. Keshi till the next generation, will remain the most ballsy local coach ever. He did what was best for his team, left to NFF the likes of Mba and V. Moses would never have seen game time, even Oboabona and Omeruo, but look where his guts got him

If Siasia cannot have such balls and save his integrity over NFF's pettiness, then he does not deserve to be the coach of the Super Eagles. We need to stop making excuses for sheer incompetence.

NFF have closer links with our individual stars than any said indigenous coach have. It's going to be hard to shun then, cos that's exactly what Oliseh did to an extent.

And come to think of it, Oliseh is the only one that has ever stood face-face against him employers. lots of hidden mud around.

It is not easy. They are the bosses. That is the NFF. Even Coach Keshi who went to war with them faced the full wrath of the NFF. His time was hell. Those guy bent Coach Keshi, sacked his assistant, Coach Okpala, owed him, left him coaching without a contract and financial support.

Do you remember Coach Siasia complaining about the Welfare of his players and getting a Stern warning from the NFF men?

Coach Sylvanus Okpala tried to fight and a hero of his calibre was relieved of his duty with no pay.

I tell you, it is not easy on these coaches. It is so hard that they can not complain.

Coach Oliseh tried to show strong head, refused their list. They dealt with him by sending him to South Africa to camp for the CHAN without food. Sent him to the tournament in a two star hotel with poor food and without allowances for the players.

I believe they sent the team to Kaduna for Coach Oliseh to fail. Unfortunately, Coach Siasia found himself in the middle of the war.

Coach Oliseh and Enyeama complained about Kaduna. Amaju Pinnick was not smart enough to listen to the professionals. He sent our foreign pros there.

Iwobi and Carl Ikeme had stomach upsets there.

Yet Pinnick insists we must continue there.

They interfere with the line ups, players called, the coaching crew the coach must use.

If these men know too much, they should pull their Kaftans and Agbalanze, were track suits and Coach the team. I am tired of their careless mismanagement.

Iwobi outshines Ighalo as Watford sink deeper into trouble

Nigeria youngster Alex Iwobi outshone fellow Super Eagles star Odion Ighalo after he scored in Arsenal 4-0 win to further endanger Watford’s survival hopes in the Premier League.

Iwobi, whose appearance for Nigeria was limited after he recovered from food poisoning on international duty last week, struck after 38 minutes courtesy of an assist by Alexis Sanchez, who laid the ball into the path of the youngster who only had to slide home from inside the box.

It was the 19-year-old midfielder’s second goal in the Premier League.

The impressive Iwobi was later substituted in the 74thminute.
Ighalo, on the other hand, was replaced after 46 minutes when he failed to add to his 15-goal tally.

Watford remain on 37 points, three points shy of the magical 40 points many reckon would keep a club up in the English top flight.

It was a sweet revenge for Arsenal, who were sent packing in the quarterfinal of the FA Cup by Watford at The Emirates.

Arsenal boss Wenger salutes 'fearless' Iwobi

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has again paid glowing praise of Nigeria youngster Alex Iwobi, describing him as “fearless and very mobile” after he notched his second Premier League goal today.

Nephew of legendary Nigeria star Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Iwobi scored after 38 minutes as Arsenal swept past Watford 4-0 at the Emirates.

“He has been here (Arsenal) since he was seven or eight. He’s fearless and very mobile,” Wenger saluted the Nigeria international after his latest exploit.

“I am pleased with his talent, but even more with his attitude and willingness to learn.”

The 19-year-old forward has made seven appearances for ‘The Gunners’ in his debut season in the Premier League – two starts and five as a sub.
