It is easier being a web designer than a developer. A good developer should have at least 5 years hands on experience, and websites to show for it, some of which should have attained success, if no success was attained a good developer should be able to explain why. A good developer is like a surgeon able to dissect any website and pull out the basic story behind it.

The reason a lot of startups fail in Nigeria is because web developers were not contracted.
It is also important to note that anyone can claim to be a web developer, it is your duty to investigate their previous projects.
If you have a website that isn't doing well you need to see a web developer. Your website might require a makeup or redirection.

It is also important to note that no web developer will educate you on your project without a sort of consulting fee.
And it is wrong to pay a fee without knowing what to expect, so the first step would be to request previous projects and investigate their failures and successes. Web developers should have their contracts drawn which includes a basic consultant fee payable ahead of consultation and deductible from contract fee if the project is finally awarded.

There's no time to it, just start as soon as u have the passion for it. As time goes by, u'll be measuring your progrress and you either get frustrated and leave or you get more enthusiastic and be ready to face more of the challenge. as time goes you'll become more convinced this is what you want to do for the rest of your life.

Like every aspects in life, there's always the good side and the bad side. The good side, web developers are much in demand in the labour market today, i read vacancies very often and i can testify to you there are companies looking to hire good developers, the bad side is that, if you want to stay solo, you'll not be havin jobs to work on regularly, u can stay months without a project.

There's more i can talk about but, i think it'll be better i leave it at this, the basic thin in this profession is fulfillment.

It is amusing to read different ways people tried to define who is a developer and who is a designer.

Originally, a designer has no business with coding on the front end (FE) using any of the FE technologies/tools i,e, html, javascript, css etc. A designer does what his role says he does - he designs, using Photoshop, wire frame etc. More like a prototype building. Then a developer translates this prototype into efficient and functional codes using the FE tech. and tools mentioned earlier. In fact, here in the UK, many institutions have further separated the roles of a developer to a Developer and a Front End developer. The FE developers are not designers, but they take the design (prototype) from the designers and do the FE development. The developers, or if you like, you can call them backend developers, then do the server side stuff.

But in recent years, there has been overlapping of roles and that is where most of the posts above got it wrong. Yes, a designer may go out of his traditional role to learn FE tech & tools and in fact do some front end codes that got deployed into production environment and a developer may do both backend and FE stuffs.

Interestingly, I have found myself on all sides of the divide. I have been to where I needed to build and support end to end. I have also been to where I was concerned with FE only. But currently, I do both backend server code and FE codes but I must work with oracle developers who handle database codes/scripts (stored proc., functions etc). So my backend role has been further separated. The Oracle developers handle all repository interactions exposing their stored procs. and functions to me to use. I do backend .Net codes as well as front end html, javascript css codes. The designer provides me with the prototype. That is the way it works.

So, even though there has been an overlapping of a designer and FE developer roles, they are intrinsically not the same.
